    "getting kaijued" is when your opponent tributes one of your monsters and special summons a kaiju to your side of the field, usually it is a good way to out a monster that can't be destroyed, targeted, etc.
    "getting trished" is when your opponent resolves the effect of "Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier" which is really popular because of how devastating it can be for you
    to "pop" a card is to destroy it via an effect
    to "mill" is to send a card fro deck to graveyard, usually the top one
    to "spin" is to return a card, usually from the field, to the deck or extra deck
    to "bounce" is to return a card from the field to hand
    to "recycle" is a term used to describe a card effect that gets cards back into your deck or hand so that you can re-use them
    to "burn" is to reduce your opponent's life points via an effect
    to "bait" is when you activate a card or effect knowing your opponent is going to negate it, but you don't really need that effect to resolve, you just use it so that your opponent doesn't negate the other effects that you actually want
    a card that "floats" is a card, usually a monster, that special summons another monster when it gets destroyed
    a "beatstick" or "beater" is a monster with a high ATK value
    a "wall" is a monster with high DEF value
    an "Armades" is a monster that doesn't allow your opponent to activate cards or effects when it attacks
    to "scoop" is to give up in a dueal that you haven't officially lost yet
    an "mst" is an effect that destroys one spell or trap
    "backrow" is the non-official name for the spells and traps
    a "floodgate" is a card, usually a trap, that restricts your opponent in some form and keeps them from playing the game normally
    fuck it, I am pretty sure I'm still missing a ton of words, yugioh should be considered a variation of english itself

      the game has so much jargon, but you've explained a good bit. i don't use most of the Yu-Gi-Oh dialect when playing anyway, so i learned from a few of these. Also, there are a good many floodgates that aren't traps, therefore it may help to give an example of each. I.E. Anti-spell fragrance, Thunder King Rai-Oh, and Deck Lockdown/Necrovalley

    I think what dzeef wants, is for his subs to makeup a new yugioh term. My vote is "in the fridge." Its when you could special summon a monster(either by effect or by summoning it normally(synchro xyz etc)) but you dont cuz of your opponents backrow. So you leave the monster "In the fridge" so its ready to be used at any moment but not on the field.

      Toolbox: the options that a deck has
      Stun: cards that make the opponent not be able to do something
      Stall: cards that force the opponent to wait out their turns
      Beatdown: beating a player by a large amount

      Milling: sending cards, usually non-targeting, from top of deck to the grave.
      Tier: competitive viability of the deck, compared to others. Lower number, the better.
      Boss monster: a monster that a significant portion of deck is dedicated to summoning or supporting.
      Beat stick:a monster where the primary attribute is large attack.
      Spam:a monster that can be easily summoned, usually by it's own or easily searchable effects.
      Armades: a monster that prevents card activation when attacking
      Floodgate: a card that prevents your opponent from taking certain actions, usually preventing them achieving their primary strategy.
      Scooping: surrendering.
      Vanilla monster: a monster with no effect.

    it is interesting that even though you are making a video about terminology some things are still just natural. You used the terms "milling" and "searcher" without explaining them. I know what they mean but milling cards isn't really self explanatory to people who haven't played or played against lightsworn.

    • @cacs2201
      @cacs2201 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Searcher is kinda more self explanatory, but yeah he should have explained milling (even tough I already know too)

    • @timothye.2902
      @timothye.2902 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Just to clarify for people who don't know what milling is: "to mill X is to move the top X cards from your deck to your graveyard". Technically milling could target the bottom of your deck (I think at least one thing in Magic: The Gathering does that), but more often tan not it targets the top.
      A term which is often used in conjunction with milling is "decking out". In most card games, running out of cards in your deck causes either an immediate loss (such as MtG) or some kind of delayed but inevitable loss (such as Hearthstone's unavoidable damage)

    • @blackcandymensshop7691
      @blackcandymensshop7691 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      In addition to that, the term "Mill" was inspired by the similar named Magic Card "Millstone", as it presented the earliest forms of this particular mechanic. But milling itself became only a iconic instant victory condition, with the infamous "Grindstone" and "Painter's Servant" combo.
      Since the introduction of "Millstone", many cardgames have adapted similar mechanics that earned the moniker of "Mill" in their respected communities, who often live in a love-hate relationship with it.

    • @kingsleygoffe6174
      @kingsleygoffe6174 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blackcandymen´s Shop so if I use future fusion to summon five headed dragon is it consider a mill since I’m sending 5 dragon type monster from deck to grave , or 3 if I’m using dark matter dragon ?

    • @timothye.2902
      @timothye.2902 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically, no, since milling X would be moving X *random* cards (often the top X cards) of your deck to the grave, whereas the examples you used (lets throw in Foolish Burial too) are not cards selected at random. However, I think the term still applies because it is useful. Kind of like the example of the non-monster card that could still be considered a hand-trap.

  • @TransShadow42
    @TransShadow42 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    pretty sure you got engine wrong. What you described was a splashable engine. The engine is just what the deck, or the actual play is itself. As you said in competitive decks, they use multiple engines, but the deck is mainly focused around one engine. That's where the deck name comes from. The pendulum magicians deck focuses on the magicians engine, but may also splash in the speedroid or spellbook engine. This is slightly harder to make the distinction in yugioh, but in games like pokemon or vanguard, decks are built around one engine, where they have a back up thing to do in case they can't get off the main play of the deck.

    • @theogrobbythedragon
      @theogrobbythedragon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't really know this for sure but I think what you're referring to is the core, which is what the actual deck is and what its function is while the engine is meant to compliment and boost its consistency or power.

    love this vid! at first I was thinking this video should be called "yugioh *jargon* you should know", but then I realized that calling these jargon words "terms" helps effectively sell the point that they're important to know/understand

  • @CaseyBarbee
    @CaseyBarbee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Some more:
    -Mill: sending cards from the top of deck to grave
    -Floodgate: a card that stays on the field (often a continuous trap) that has an effect that prevents one or both players from doing certain actions
    -Pop: another word for destroy
    -Reborn: a card that summons something from grave
    -Grind game: the state of the game when both players have few cards and resources so big combos are unlikely. Small changes in card advantage become much more important
    -Lonefire: a card that tributes (itself) to summon from deck
    -sack: drawing the best/only possible card off the top of your deck to win the game. OR it could refer to opening a very very good hand. Also called luck-sack
    -meta: the most played and most popular decks. When going to a tournament, these are the decks you are going to prepare for and (hopefully) play against
    -e-tele: a card (normally spell) that summons a monster from deck
    -FTK: first turn kill. It's when you win the duel before your opponent can play a card.
    -OTK: one turn kill. It's when you deal 8000 damage in one turn.
    -Kizan: a monster that summons itself from hand when you have another monster from the archetype on the field
    -cyber dragon: a monster that summons itself when you have no monsters and your opponent does
    -spin: to return a card to the top of the opponents deck
    -book: flip a monster face down
    -pitch: send from hand to graveyard.
    -vanilla: a monster with no effect or no relevant effect.
    -TSet: setting one monster and one spell/trap. Before zone placement mattered, people normally did this in the same column and it'd look like the letter T.
    -bounce: return a card to the hand
    -win more: cards that are good when you are in a favorable position, but bad when you are in an unfavorable position. This is a great discussion topic by the way. Should you play cards like this at all? On the one hand, you want to make as many hands as playable as possible, but your deck has to be more than "playable," it has to be strong enough to win as well.
    -freeze: make a face down spell/trap unable to be activated
    -autowin: a combo/card that is almost always going to win you the game if it goes off without interruption
    -bomb: a card that is very powerful late game but not early game
    -boss monster: a monster with high attack that has a powerful effect. This is normally the main card a deck wants to summon
    -fizzle: to make a card resolve without a effect by making a mandatory part of the effect unable to happen. An example would be chaining dd crow to monster reborn. The monster you banish with dd crow can't be summoned by reborn so the effect "fizzles." Note: this is not a technical term
    -miss the timing: this is when an optional trigger effect that triggers "when X happens," is unable to activate because "X" was not the last thing to happen.
    Note: this is only true for trigger effects that say "when" not "if". And it's only true for optional effects, not mandatory ones.
    Maybe some of these are obvious, and I probably missed a lot, but hopefully these help somebody.

    Cool vid, to be honest I never competitively played Yugioh and mainly just a fan from the anime, but it's interesting watching vids like yours to learn a bit how the game is played in real life and the strategy involved. I can relate, I used to play Pokemon competitively a lot some years ago, and I remember when I had to learn a lot about the meta and how it doesn't even compare to the show or playing against the CPU's.

    evenly matched isn't a hand trap, it's primary use is to board wipe the opponent during your own turn, Typhoon & Inifinite Transience are hand traps.

    • @Marcusjnmc
      @Marcusjnmc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      imo hand traps are cards which you activate from your hand during your opponents turn to disrupt them & which can be activated when you go second, mostly that is just monsters but it also included Typhoon, & when Infinite Transience comes out it will also include that & that will probably largely replace effect veiler.

    I've been playing this game since i was a freshman in hs and been watching yugitubers for most of my college career, but I still didn't know what x-"number" actually meant
    Mostly since i don't go to tourneys but that was very helpful

    • @DLH112
      @DLH112 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think 'in a vacuum' means only considering the card/what is being talked about by itself/on its own merit. as opposed to taking into consideration stuff like the meta or how much/how good the other support is for whatever type of card its support for.
      something like Snake Rain is good 'in a vacuum' because if it was almost any other type, especially zombie, it'd be amazing. But its the fact there aren't any good/playable reptiles with GY effects that makes it bad.

    Target - Select/Target a card/monster
    Destroy - Doesn't target, Destroys a card/monster
    Banish - Doesn't destroy or target, Remove a card from play
    Send - Doesn't destroy or target, simply sends a card to where it says so.
    Some people really out here thinking a card with the effect of "Cannot be targeted or destroyed" is immune to everything.

    As a mostly casual I STILL don’t get why people say X-#, it feels like it can allow for quite a bit of deception from people, also unless every tourney is the same amount of rounds it then begs the question “out of how many rounds” since if I went 1-2 I can just tell everyone I went X-2 to make myself sound/feel better.

  • @heatguts
    @heatguts 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I don't really understand "tempo" all that well.
    From what I can gather, it's something about you or your opponent's ability to play the game, but there's no real way to measure it? Is it something that players have more of, i.e. having more cards means you have "card advantage", or something that only one player has, like board control? Most terms have some kind of reason that they're called what they are, but in music tempo is simply the speed at which the piece is played, which doesn't really make sense in the context of the definition I heard. Can someone explain?

    • @Dzeeff
      @Dzeeff  7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It actually does relate to the music definition, kind of. It's basically who is dictating the pace of the duel. As in, who is the one initiating plays and who is the one forced to respond to the plays.

      Tempo is actually not specific to a single card game and represents itself in different forms, considering the card game you are playing, that is. As the concept of tempo is to evaluate the more intricate means of how and when to present ones treats/answers and the micromanaging of ones resources, without having to resort to copious amounts of card advantage.

    Personally, I use shorthand with my Darklords deck, because Ixchel is a archetypal Trade-In on legs, has a pretty good 2500/2900 body given how easily the deck can use self-mill and Monster Reborn effects. To top it off, she and many other Darklords can use my Darklord backrow cards from the graveyard as quick effects for the low cost of 1000 Lp and returning said backrow to the deck. Heck, the traps don't even target! Only sad part is that the monsters all have "each effect of X OPT" text, which stops it from looping.
    Now, for your homework: Count every instance of shorthand in this comment.

      Vance Collie if a card floats it basically just replaces itself, if "Dante, traveller of the burning abyss" is destroyed for example, you lose a card in card advantage but dante's effect will trigger to add a card back from the graveyard to the hand, sk you go neutral in card advantage

    Question. What is "Floating" or "Floating Effects"?

    • @TheTrueLeafless
      @TheTrueLeafless 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It pretty much means, that a card, despite leaving the field won't result in negative card advantage as it either allows you to add a card to your hand, recycle a card in your GY (but not returning it to your deck) or special summons a monster from your deck.

    • @heatguts
      @heatguts 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A card that "floats" is a card that replaces itself somehow when it dies, so that your overall card advantage doesn't change. The most straightforward example would be the gadget monsters, where when one dies you can add another gadget from your deck to your hand (or in the case of gold/silver summon from the deck to the field). You lose one card on the field but gain one card in the hand. They're most common in monsters but some spell/traps like Toy Vendor have floating effects too.
