  • Thank you for viewing my demonstration video on how to iron silk (habotai or flat crepe) onto freezer paper as an easy and inexpensive way to mount the silk for painting. Works especially well for classes. Please see Sharon Silk Studio channel for more how to videos on silk painting including how to iron charmeuse silk onto freezer paper.

What a brilliant idea! I practice Chinese and Japanese calligraphy and painting and the silk paper and scrolls I've purchased are very expensive. This idea is wonderful. Thank you

Hi, Sharon. It's interesting. Could you tell please why you stick silk onto paper. Do you use this method instead of pulling silk over the frame? If so, how dyes flow on it?

    Hi Sharon Please help! ❗️💗
I have a very delicate silk shrug I need to shorten ir my wedding. Dies the freezer paper peel off easily? Can I hand sew thru it?
I’m nervous about iron on too hot settling.
Thank you very very much for your professional advice , best wishes Susie 😊

Hi Sharon....I wonder if you tried to iron-on a "finished painted silk" (for metallic gutta or other reason, after its on the freezer paper) and if you had to do any additional protective steps ?

Sharon, I have really enjoyed your tutorials! I have a question: if you were going to use the silk ONLY as a piece of artwork - could you leave it mounted on the freezer paper and then use the freezer paper to help hold the silk in place when you matt it and frame it? That seems like a pretty easy way to stiffen the silk for framing. I know you have mounted silk on glass or framed canvas with varnish, do you prefer that method because of how the dyes come back to life?
    Thanks for your input!

Hi, Becky, you probably already have figured out the answer. I just figured out how to get into this account again and haven't visited it for a long time! So sorry for the late answer. I would say, yes, you could mount your silk on freezer paper to frame. You could also secure the freezer paper back to something stiffer (like a piece of matting) and then iron on your silk. This would be a semi-permanent mounting because if you ever wanted to remount, you could simply peel the silk off the freezer paper. I do prefer to mount my silk on canvas because the varnish makes the dyes look the color they were when they were wet. I also then only have the cost of the canvas to frame. Some don't subscribe to this method of mounting because the silk cannot be removed and mounted differently in the future. Personal preference really. Take care! Sharon

Hi! I was wondering, how do you transfer your design onto the silk when using this method?
Does this work when using Karen's MS technique? Will the hot iron mess up the MS?
How do you keep the dyes from flowing underneath the silk and mixing together or contaminating each other? Are you going to show how you paint your silks?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us all!
    God Bless!

Hi, ChiRho Studio, I'm so sorry for the late response, I've not been able to find the password for this account! Don't know if you still need answers, but here they are:1) How do you transfer your design onto the silk when using this method? After the silk is mounted on the freezer paper, I place my pattern under the freezer paper. I usually outline my pattern with a thick sharpie first so it's easier to see. I then place both on a light table and lightly trace my design on the silk with a General's sketch-n-wash pencil.2) Does this work when using Karen's MS technique? Will the hot iron mess up the MS?I have had limited success using this with Karen's MS technique. If I am going to use the MS technique, I always suspend my silk from a frame. I have, however, tried this. If you spray the scarf with the MS after you have mounted it on the freezer paper, it will often detach from the freezer paper, so if you want to do MS, I would suspend from a frame, spray, dry, and then iron onto the freezer paper. The hot iron will not mess up the MS. However, I would really recommend if you are going to us the MS technique, to suspend your silk from a frame. If you want more control over your dyes when painting the scarf on the freezer paper, you could always use liquid MS as a dilutant, but be aware, once you do that, you'll put your dyes on the silk and that's where they will stay! You won't get any of the nice bleed and blend that is so wonderful with silk dyes.3) How do you keep the dyes from flowing underneath the silk and mixing together and contaminating each other? I want them to mix together when I paint my scarves this way. I would only recommend mounting on freezer paper if you are planning on painting your scarf with an abstract, dyes run together, type of design. I love spraying it with water first, using a lot of dye, and then putting salt on it. Always a surprise the next day what you come up with.4) Are you going to show us how you paint your silks?I haven't made any videos about that yet. I got a very nice, new video camera a few years ago, but my parents have been ill (along with life happening), and I've not painted much in the last few years. My time to paint will come again, and perhaps then I'll make more videos. Meanwhile, if you have more questions and want a faster response, you can always email me at sharonshankland@comcast.netTake care and happy painting! Sharon

I don't understand the reason for sticking the silk to the paper.

When you adhere the fabric to book casing, the PVA glue will sip through the fabric without paper backing. The paper backing also helps the fabric edges to adhere well to the chipboard. :)

She is preparing the silk this way to make it easy to paint on. She mentions this in the video and it's in the description.
