Giant Salamander Farming in China - Harvesting and Processing Salamander Meat

  • This giant salamander species is farmed for its meat, there are more than 2 million salamanders on farms across China. This species is eaten and its body parts have been used in traditional Chinese medicines. It has a high economic value, leading to unsustainable and unregulated harvesting from the wild. To meet demand from a developing domestic market, an intensive salamander farming industry has spread across much of the range of the species; this has become a key aspect of the rural economy in certain range provinces.

    In Europe we are farming lovely animals like horses, rabbits, partridges etc for food, especially popular during the colder seasons and no one is condemning us. What’s the fuss about farming salamanders? At least they have the technology to innovate efficient food farming 👍

      Lots of people are plant based globally for compassion, health and sustainability reasons, there is no need to cause any creature pain and suffering. People thrive on beans, lentils, nuts, hemp seeds ect... Heart disease and cancer is far less in plant based people who eat whole foods plant based.

    Watching this whole process is fascinating. I live in Japan and have only seen these in zoos. They're considered endangered animals here. It would be great if we could buy many and start breeding them and releasing them back into their natural habitats as well, not just for food.

      In some parts of the Kinki region, the artificially introduced Chinese giant salamander has become wild and is causing issues through competition and hybridization with native Japanese giant salamanders. Recent surveys along the Kamo River revealed that out of 111 captured Japanese giant salamanders, 13% were identified as Chinese giant salamanders, and 44% were hybrids. However, the Chinese giant salamander is also listed as "near-threatened" on the IUCN Red List, and is therefore protected by laws and regulations. As a result, the issue has become complex and cannot simply be addressed as an invasive species.

    The beauty of the video...shows that each continent flora and fauna can be extremely different and grow to some amazing sizes when left alone. I myself never knew salamanders can be so large. Our planet is amazing but it can be more amazing when we humans live in balance with nature.
    We have many videos that show human consumption but we need to note that the Chinese are working very hard to balance their consumption with the natural ecosystem. They realized long time ago that over a billion people can be like locusts to the land and leave their human population with nothing.

    There are at least 5 types of Giant Salamanders unique to China all around the surroundings of Yanzte River. Due to wide-spread famines that happened every year since Qing Dynasty to early 1900s caused by 110+ years of invasions, over-hunting greatly reduced their numbers in the wild to a point of near extinction. In the 1950s, PRC started rolling out Wild Animal Protection Act and continuously adding new sections to it, it wasn't fully enforced until 1970s due to the fact China was still facing multiple invasion wars during that period. The darker skinned one is the only type that's allowed to be farm-raised for consumption; the rest are Level-2 Protected animals and poaching is punishable by at least 10 years in prison up to death. China has been gradually releasing them back into the wild and their numbers have increased. The Chinese government has lowered their Endangerment Level from Red to Yellow in 2014 and the Protection Act remains in effect.
    In 2021 a man who prepped one for his cooking show on social media was immediately reported to the police by a viewer. Investigation quickly revealed that it was in fact purchased through a licensed farm. This shows that the general population today is quite well informed as to what they should and should not eat.

      Thank-you for sharing this information it is very good to hear about successful examples of wild life being protected. And the chinese government never gets any credit for the environmental protection that is happening around china and through the use of Chinese products all over the world.

    • @KrazeDiamond
      @KrazeDiamond 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@codysmith605 Yea there's actually a lot of stories about China's battles against illegal poaching between 1970s ~ 1990s and many police/volunteered patrols had been killed in the process. One of the most iconic of such stories that was adapted into a film titled Kekexili: Mountain Patrol, about some volunteered anti-poaching Rangers who patrolled the Tibetan Plateau to protect Tibetan Antelopes--Level2 Protected WIld Animal, against a band of poachers. The Rangers are licensed to carry rifles and have the authority to shoot to kill. Very fascinating film.

      @meghanpierce5375 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Problem: The color doesn't mean much and genetics is the only way to tell them apart.
      The ones they are releasing seem to be hybrids of the other species. They don't breed as well (or at all) and aren't as healthy.
      These salamanders are also being released in areas where there are still native populations of other species, and they seem to be hybridizing with the wild ones too, which puts the wild species at risk of extinction too.
      Because the 5-6 species model of Chinese Giant Salamanders is so new and the farming is old, this happened.
      Also, for some reason they do not breed well in captivity after the second generation- probably due to being hybrids- so they have to collect eggs from the wild.
      There are a lot of issues that need to be worked out with this farming, but unfortunately it doesn't seem like it's happening.

    • @KrazeDiamond
      @KrazeDiamond 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@meghanpierce5375 That was true over a decade ago, wasn't until 2000 that the scientists realized there are at least 5 different breeds. Farming began in the 80s, back then everyone thought there are only 3 types of Giant Salamanders: Chinese, Japanese, North American. In the beginning, a lot of people after learning about the law started releasing the ones they had in captivity anywhere there's water; this is a problem seen all around the world where civilians' seemingly good deed end up harming the bio ecosystems.
      Recently they found some 17 purebreds and a new plan is being drawn up. With vastly improved farming techniques, bio technologies, and a better informed public, I'm sure they'll fix it in time.

    I love salamanders we preserve and help them here in Michigan but also I somewhat understand; as in there’s differences in cultures. Interesting to see how they flourish there however synthetic it/they may be. 😶 edit to add: anyone in these areas with access to vernal pools who cares about these animals this is their natural habitat and I suggest if willing to let them thrive as they’re so interesting and also very cute😮

    This is fascinating and interesting, yet informative and educational. It’s good to know that China have this kind of awareness, understanding, knowledge and technology to help sustain the species, at the same time make it as a sustainable food source for human consumption in a daily basis. Just look at the meat itself, it’s so juicy sweet. Smooth and silky. Texture wise must be tasted like fish meat, but not fishy n smelly. More similar to frog or bullfrog meat I would guess. After all, most amphibian/cold-blooded animal meat texture/taste are almost similar in a way. As for Salamander, I guess the meat is rich in protein, Omega-3 and collagen for sure. So bouncy and firm❤😘

      Only 1 type Giant Salamander is allowed to be consumed in China, has been a protein source for over 2,000 years, it's got many medicinal properties; very good for women who just gave birth.
      Licensed farms are allowed to keep a handful of breeding stocks besides Wild Animal Protection & Research Instituition. Today, a single farm yields approximately 2.5 million population annually.
      In 2021 a man who prepped one for his cooking show on social media was immediately reported to the police by a viewer. Investigation quickly revealed that it was in fact purchased through a licensed farm. This shows that the general population today is quite well informed as to what they should and should not eat.
