S1 - Ep 281 - Hartenbos - Our Drive Through this Beautiful Holiday Town!

  • We had to take a drive through this picturesque seaside town situated on the world-renowned Garden Route of South Africa. When I took a walk through the shopping complex to the beach, I could see the white sand stretch for kilometres. Apparently it has warm water which is perfect for swimming, surfing, and loads of other water sports and activities. We could see a variety of restaurants and bars, and a museum dedicated to the history of the Voortrekker. Unfortunately it was closed on the day we were in town. The ATKV Resort makes up a large part of the town and we saw many large caravan parks and camping sites located close to the beach, as well as a number of holiday flats and self-catering accommodation. This would be a great destination for those looking to enjoy some time in the sun and surf. It was fun taking a slow drive through Hartenbos. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #hartenbos #gardenroute

My oupa built a church owned holiday camp on the Hartenbos river in the 1950s. I spent my teen years going by train from Cape Town to Hartenbos for December holidays. In those years the lagoon area and a large portion of the beach front were just beautiful big sand dunes. I'm actually so sad to see how it is now. It's like Sandton-by-the-Sea! I suppose nothing stays the same....

Same as de Kelders & Stanford cove. An areal pic of what I as a teenager knew as sandpaaie winding down to the sea through the dusty strandveld type vegetation, is now one huge expanse of coastal suburbia of questionable architectural merit. Oh well, nothing we build can last forever. Great pity though for the lost flora & fauna.

@Phil Venter So you've known Hartenbos for a very long time! Your holidays by train to Hartenbos sound like unforgettable experiences, thank you for sharing those with us! It was our first time, so we had no previous images to compare the present-day Hartenbos to, but I can only imagine how it has been developed since the days you mentioned. All in the name of progress. I would also much prefer seeing sand dunes like you describe! 🤷🏼‍♂️ There is no doubt though that it's still very beautiful there though and we have to hang on to that. Thank you for coming along with us! 🚙🌊

This town and its surroundings must be extremely familiar to you then! I've read in a few comments how Hartenbos has changed over the years, it certainly looks like a well-appointed holiday town and I'm sure there's not even space for a mouse over peak holiday season. I can hear the fondness with which you refer to your in-laws, those are precious memories. Thank you for sharing them with us. 😊🏖️

Life had other plans, I guess. 😏 I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time next year in honour of your brother and I just know he'll be smiling. Thank you for coming with us for a drive through Hartenbos. I hope you were reminded of some good and special times in your life. 😊🚙 It certainly seems a lively place and I can only imagine how busy it gets over peak seasons.

A love lock is a padlock that couples place on a bridge, fence, statue, or other installation to commemorate their indestructible bond. Often padlocks are engraved with the couple's name and the date, while others go further with ribbons and stickers.

When we visited our friends in Kleinbrakrivier, we came out to Hartenbos beach a few times. Its really amazingly beautiful. WE had lunch at the Spur which overlooks the beach. Its one of my last and really treasured memories of my late hubbie and me together on holiday. We were there over the festive season and the place was packed out and really humming. Theres also a divine ice cream shop there on the beach front. For me its so sad that the trains no longer go. I remember a lovely train trip I took along here. We visited Wilderness station, all overgrown and desolate. Grootbrakrivier has turned the station into a restaurant. I do hope you are going to pop into Victoria Bay, it is so pretty there and there is a rock that looks exactly like a lion.

    • @DustBugsTravel

We were in Hartenbos completely out of season, but we could just tell that this place will be buzzing come peak season! ☀️🏖️ There is simply so much to do by the looks of things and no shortage of beautiful and exciting places to visit, so I'm not surprised that it's the case. Everywhere we see train lines, we're saddened all over again by the fact that we don't see moving trains anywhere! 😥🚆 We did visit a few more stunning places, but Victoria Bay wasn't one of them this time around. Perhaps another time. 🚙🌊

Hartenbos is a holiday town and the go-to place for many! 🏖️🚙 It's clear that a lot of fun is to be had here and, if all the accommodation units are anything to go by, it looks like thousands of people flock into this town during peak season. It must be a sight! 😁☀️

I can imagine that during the holidays that extraordinary long beach is needed to accommodate everyone.
The municipality must be congratulated for keeping that town so sparkling and neat.
I read somewhere that it started out in 1933 as a holiday resort for lower paid staff of South African Railways. It surely has come a long way since.

I always joke and say we're in a permanent holiday mood because of the holiday town we live in and I think it's very similar in Hartenbos, perhaps even more so since half of the town, it seems, is literally a holiday resort. I'm glad you told us about the weather too! Sonia forget to mention it in the Mossel Bay episode, but remembered it as we drove through Hartenbos. Quite amazing to hear that it's similar to Hawaii! Thanks Dust Bugs for driving through Hartenbos.
▪︎ The round building in the begining of the clip was partially used by a local radiostation SFM for broadcasting certain times of the day. Don't think they're still doing it as they have a broadcasting studio in Mossel Bay overlooking the harbour.
▪︎ The big green lawn where playing of golf is not allowed is the Amfiteater which is used for big live performances during especially holidays.
▪︎ As with MBay, Hartenbos is clean and tidy because it is driven by a DA Municipality.
Hartenbos was and still is the best holiday destination to visit.

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you for the info and for watching our video of Hartenbos. 👌🏻 The round building is now occupied by the centre management as far as I understood, so the radio station most probably broadcasts from Mossel Bay now.🎙️Sonia thought the open field would be used for festivals and such, so your explanation makes complete sense. 😁🚙

You gotta get out more! (just kidding) Those locks are messages of love 'locked in forever' and you find them all over the world from Tuscany to Berlin to Los Angeles, and they are a nuisance to most municipalities because they eventually become so heavy that they pull fences down and have to be regularly removed. Nice sentiment though and obviously very popular. My own contribution to the love of my life hangs on a hand railing in Paris.

It was very evident to us too that the town is predominantly Afrikaans. Even apartment buildings that were clearly not built yesterday, have only Afrikaans names.
