That is really a great idea Alan. The old ways are rarely passed on, so the moment you can buy pen kits, carbide tools etc. people use them and don't learn the basics. That initial drilling of the hole has certainly got to be the hardest bit with it being so narrow. Well done!
@@AsWoodTurns i made my wife one of the stick pens a while back she loves it . the grand babies do to lol always trying to steal grammys pen lol . but the base is a great idea i would not have thought about . thanks again
Always fun to go back and revisit old processes. Since many of my projects take 3- to 20 days I often turn a few pens for immediate satisfaction. Well done as always Alan. George
I picked up this idea a few years ago from Cap'n Eddie. I like the upgrade to a desk top pen. Great tip on starting with a short drill then finishing with the long one. That deep of a hole can be a challenge especially if the grain is not straight. Thumbs up on this one Alan.
The Pen kit companies are hating you imagine making a pen without a kit Thanks Alan I never did understand that concept anyway when I made pens just about like you did that was before chucks an mandrels an all the fun stuff
First pen I ever turned was done this way, only I didn't own a lathe at the time. Instead, I bought a piece of Dymondwood (plastic infused wood; using it for knife handles in flat form at the time) dowel & filed it down using my drill press. Came out great, but it still writes like a Bic stick pen. =(
Well, I don't know of a supplier for an upgrade to the basic Bic stick pen core. If you find one, please let me know. Otherwise, the Bic tip and ink will have to do. :) Alan

Looks like you heard the main point from this video. :)
Thank you Paul
Alan

Glad I could help! It is kind of retro. :)

3 to 20 days? Are you segmenting? or a long finishing process?
Alan
Alan, Long finishing process 12 / 15 coats of lacquer finish with sanding between each 2/3 coats. George
Just remember the old saying new things are no good. Great process I love the finished project.
Thank you Opa.
Alan
But there's nothing new under the sun........
That's an awesome idea. I'm gonna try it for my desk. Also, can you do something similar with a fountain pen?
Very nice, Alan, I especially like the design of the pen base. Enjoy your videos. Have a great day.
If you can add a little more diameter to the base.
Thank you Bill.
Alan
Love the old school method! Who needs all that hardware!
Oh but who will then keep the hardware suppliers in business. :)
Alan
The simple way is sometimes the best way! Thanks for posting Alan😆😆😆😆

I have seen the CAP's pen and I like but this is an upgrade for sure.
Since I was turning pens this way long before TH-cam, maybe Eddie and I got it from the same source. :)
Thank you

Thank you
Alan
Love it, I have lots of scrap screaming for this project!
I tend to generate scrap faster than I can use it. :)
Alan
Love that pen! I'll definitely have a go at making one of those someday. :)
Just start with a short drill bit.
Don't need a pen kit.
Alan
Beautiful pieces Alan, in shows what you can do with a bit of thought. Great video my friend.
Cheers

Are you the Al Stratton who use to live in Danver's Mass and than Dover, NH?
Sue Prior
Don't think so. Never have gone by Al and the closest is Peabody, MA a long time ago.
Alan
Beautifull work! But, I prefer pen-kits because my woodturning skills are not as good as yours ;-)
Keep at it. Skills will improve.
