What about charging the crew's families for the dead crew members for the lost of the uniforms that the crew died in? Pretty scummy.
What!?, say What!? How dare they ever charge dead crew member's families with that!? those crew were heroes in my opinion they did everything they could possibly do and saved as much lives as they could and gave their lives for it and who cares about a few uniforms? I'm pretty sure they could make a thousand more more uniforms. How they never even tried to think of it this way!? I hate you White Star Line, you got what and deserved and F@#K You all !

It wasn't just uniforms either, I think I remember reading that the family of the one of the ship's band was charged for the missing Violin as well.
This whole thing shows how shady the White Star Line really was. Sending representatives to the victims, making them sign wavers that they could not and would not sue for damages, plus sending bills to the surviving family members for the band to get compensation for the tuxes that went down with them. Absolutely horrendous.
They also asked for compensation for the lost instruments

I mean let's say I drop you off in New York tomorrow.. you have no luggage oh here's $700. Not exactly going to really help you expecialy if you haven't any money to begin with like most if not all of the lower class did.. okay I have $47 cash in my wallet right now.. obviously if I didn't have my bank card or checkbook that's all I'd have if I were suddenly dropped in New York.. oh.. somebody gives me $700. I love all your videos, but this was one of the most interesting of them all. I wish more people would watch this one. I’ve watched tons of videos on the Titanic, and this episode was one I had no idea about. The horrible actions of the White Star Line following the disaster...terrible.
Sam your videos are not only educational but when you add your personal beliefs it shows what kind of person you are. You care and in this day and time that is rare. Thank you for sharing the history and thank you for putting your heart and soul behind it
Did the passengers even know who ismay was at the time
I feel like a lot would have only seen him as another survivor
First class passengers certainly knew him, as he was a fixture in the first class public rooms during the voyage. Some second class would know him, third class passengers had no idea.
Ya I was going to say the same thing as the other person 1st and probably 2nd class passengers most of them would of known who he is.. 3rd class well a few of them might of but likely 90% wouldn't...
The first class passengers yes. The second and third class passengers no. Ismay, I believe to stay in the first class area so they would know.

In high school we did a play based on the trials of Ismay.
I was fortunate enough to be Molly Brown.
When I was in school our teacher made a bowl of water that was as cold as that water and we could leave once our lifeboat was launched I was lucky enough to be lady duff Gordon who was out with the first lifeboat

He was the reason the ship was steaming at full speed, at the end of the day it's the captains decision, but he persuaded him to going that fast to try to beat Olympics record. He put everyone in harm's way for profit. In his mind knowing this he still saved his own life and you and Sam feel sorry for him? Lol ok
Actually Ismay might have staged the whole sinking on the orders of bankers who wanted to get rid of many fortune owners on board that opposed the setting up of the FED that was to be signed soon.
My paternal great grand parents are from Denmark and actually sailed over to America a week after the titanic sank. They saw titanic debris in the water.

@Andreas Glad sadly evidence for corporate psychopathy and lack of concern for human beings abounds. That wasn't the Samson that was the Californian. Some of the Californian's defenders, the Lordites, assert that the Samson was around and allegedly hunting seals but hightailed it out of there when she noticed "other ships". First, the Samson was in Iceland at the time (not even the Mauretania's mighty turbines would've got her there in time for the show); second, seals don't venture that far out into the sea from land.

Brilliant video. People need to appreciate the how British social norms in force at that time impacted the situation and decisions.

I have a What if Scenario(s): What if the iceberg damage stopped at boiler room 6 and did not open boiler room 5 and it coal bunker to the sea?
2 What if Titanic's crew had collision mats to drape over the damaged section of the hull to try and staunch the flow of water into the ship?
For the first one, it's possible that the ship could have survived with a small starboard list and the bow slightly pulled down or the sinking would have taken a lot more time, allowing the Carpathia rescue more people.

There is only one thing worse than being hated and thought of as a coward. And that’s freezing and drowning. Well actually there are many worse things than people not approving of you.. But freezing and drowning is definitely on the list. Near the top.
Well, I think I'd choose the latter. Rather than having to live with the fact that more than a thousand people died because your company didn't put enough life boats on the ship, and on top of that was going too fast, with your knowledge.
@Tyler Peterson Wait. Why? They own the ship, they aren't involved in the workings or captaining of it. They just paid for it, as in literally, they paid for it. They don't build, or run or so on anything regarding the ship. They'd be just as much a passenger as you are.
This is an excellent video but I would like to see more about the passengers that survived and what the rest of their lives were like. Their occupations, their marriages, their children, their descents and what they are doing who are alive to this day.
If I was head of White Star Line, I would still pay compensation to the Victims whether it was my fault or not

@Davin Peterson I used to manage a Books-A-Million. On A Sea of Glass is published by a UK publisher, so, unless the book is a mega bestseller, no store in the US will stock it. I don't recall us stocking OASOG when it first came out.

I remember watching a documentary a few years ago that said the families of crew killed in the disaster were sent bills for the lost uniforms. Does anyone recall that? Great video by the way.
The band leader's wife was sent a bill. I don't think it was paid though.

I don't think any of the survivors deserved any backlash for simply surviving. It's a human instinct. I'm sure things were different back then or maybe there wasn't as much information about it or something. But I am glad that there were survivors since they have brought valuable information about the sinking, which in turn led to more lessons learned (and fascinating stories).
It would be interesting to see the court documents that are available to have a look at. Keep up the great work. 😊

Imagine waiting in the US for a family member and reading all those stories. The initial trauma, shock, and disbelief. The hope when news reported everyone survived. Then the initial shock, trauma, sadness re-emerging when the news changes. Disbelief sets in as you refuse to even read the news anymore as you wait on the Carpathia. That disbelief becomes grief when the truth sets in. Then anger. Then acceptance.
That scene of Ismay getting death glares from the surviving passengers is pretty powerful. Theres lots of scenes deleted from the movie that should have been left in (yes I know the movie is already pushing three hours)
It was over 3 hours. I wish they put a DVD with all the deleted scenes in with the movie. Maybe they'll do that with the 25th anniversary edition next year (if there is one). (Jan Griffiths).
They had to cut out a bunch to keep the 1912 parts exactly 2 hours and 40 minutes long!
13:55 English law now prohibits such disclaimers of liability in transactions with individual consumers. It must have been cases like this that led to the change in the law.

Great video Sam. Derek Mahon wrote a poem called ‘After the Titanic’ which describes some of what you said from Ismays POV. I found it interesting and worth a read 😊
I think an inflation calculation is pertinent here. Survivors on the low end were seeking half a million dollars each, what they ended up with was equivalent to $25,000 dollars each. The dollar value of a lost loved one is immeasurable. The amount of the settlement for some was more money than most would ever see, and a pittance for the more wealthy that were lost. What I've come to realize through years of following and studying Titanic is that it was no one's fault, it was a terrible accident that wasn't accounted for beforehand and White Star did as much as possible without becoming insolvent. Some things were scummy, but only after the fact. We learned lessons and made headway in improving safety. You have no idea how you'd react unless you have lost someone under similar circumstances. I think all parties did what they could to.....right the ship.

Hi Sam, I got an interesting hypothetical for you.. What if the Titanic struck the iceberg during the day? Everything else is the same bar the time of impact which let's say was twelve hours earlier or later. I believe the biggest difference would have been in the response to her SOS as more operators would have been on duty aboard nearby ships. Plus would there still have been a mirage effect at sea?
I think Sam answered the mirage one. Yes. However it would have been more obvious and they may well have seen first of all the iceberg anyway and or indeed a miraged iceberg, possibly ironically, even sooner as it may have curved up over the horizon. Ergo they might have stopped or changed course even earlier than they might otherwise needed to have. As it was with everything dark separating out what should be normal and what was the mirage was harder and the iceberg may have miraged but would have simply looked like more dark in the sky. All round whilst the weather was calm it was actually a perfect storm of events coming together.
Scary as it may be to people sometimes things come together in ways we cannot predict or appreciate or prevent. Titanic was one.
For example the moon was at its closest for almost 1200 years so helped increase tides which pulled the ice floes and bergs more south than normal. Sam may be able to do some digging but iirc by trying to save the ship Smith doomed the ship and thus I don't blame Smith. I think there was ice to the NORTH of where Titanic had been. Expecting more ahead he went SOUTH where normally it was less or none. However due to the abnormal tidal forces a channel gap was actually ahead of Titanic's original course as the ice normally there had separated further and thus was on their new course actually worse. As seen by diagrams of Titanic versus Californian positions. Titanic ended up at the middle of this pack of ice while Californian further north at tip of it decided to sit it out. Really was just everything coming together. Smith only real fault was never doing the evacuation drill. First the efficiency might have been increased. Secondly this may have delayed the ship long enough the warnings had more time to reach the wireless/for the operator to catch up on delayed messages/wireless to be fixed earlier. Other than that Smith's questioning seems overly harsh on numerous occasions.
As Sam says the waters looked calm, peaceful, flat and you could see for "miles" there is no reason to slow down. You think you've adjusted course to miss the ice. The scene from the bridge confirms this assessment. He'd probably get into trouble with White Star if it was reported he wasn't cruising fast enough and he certainly wasn't at top speed. Near but not top.
Anyway getting a bit long I've digressed.
Many people, not me; find it easy to call a person a coward, yet, they could never know what they would do; until confronted by an unfolding catastrophe.

When the Britannic II was built, its new central expansion joint was positioned right in the middle of the ship and the aft expansion joint was repositioned to right in front of the #4 funnel.
This was likely due to many survivors saying that the ship broke "right down the middle" and "abaft the after expansion plate" and WSL wanted to make sure that Britannic definitely wouldn't break apart.

This is a good topic. I've always wondered what those first few days after the sinking were like for the White Star execs. What must those conversations have been like as they realized the ship was not only gone but that it had taken so many people with it.
Keep in mind too that WSL was a huge company in the Guilded Age. The thing with the tickets and paying off passengers in the hospital was just standard practice for a big company back then. That's part of the reason labor unions gained so much popularity and why we have organizations like the BBB now. You can't fault WSL or Ismay for doing what was standard practice then.
I love the videos, I am a huge fan of history, the titanic is one of those stories I have overly study cause I am fascinated by it, and your videos were a fresh take.
That's why they say that humbleness and humility are better, because even if some people dislike you, those who still believe in you testify their genuineness. Plus one gains more maturity by practicing humbleness and humility.

Ismay helped numerous people board the boats, and only left the ship 20 minutes before the sinking, in the last launched lifeboat, that he may have actually been ordered into by Murdoch! And their were still some empty seats as the boat was launched!

Interesting video, what I find really interesting is the clip from the Titanic movie of Ismay on the Carpathia, walking right behind him is Chef Boyardee, who was on the stern of the ship with Rose and Jack when it sank. Which means he went into the water but somehow he survived. I guess something only james Cameron can explain.

I don't know, I've defended Ismay in the past but didn't know about any of this - and, I hate to say it, he does paint himself as a bit of a coward with the messages and the attempt to escape, and for giving the go-ahead (because he obviously would have done) for the despicable actions that were taken after the event. It's his company after all, a company is only as good as the person in charge of it, and, well, the White Star Line made themselves look horrific, so...no, no, I still won't blame him as much as the general public did at the time, I still can't condone the smearing Hearst orchestrated so brilliantly. I know I've made mistakes I wish I could undo, and so have we all, and I genuinely think Ismay was killed by his mistakes throughout this tragedy as you say. Those who didn't make it through the night were spared the torture that he was forced to endure, and he had to endure it for another 25 years. He served his life sentence, and in that way, perhaps justice - as cruel as it sounds - was done.
Ismay took a step back from a lot of the decision making after the disaster.
Also have to remember that White Star Line was on their own, while Cunard had government backing to build huge liners all day, in addition Hearst had it out for Ismay (which accounts for many biased and outright untruthful reports on White Star Line practices as well).
It's hard, even for me, to imagine Ismay being completely absolved of many of the scummy White Star Line practices, but again, they didn't have government backing and had to save money somewhere, that doesn't excuse many of the things they did, but they'd soon very well be out of money if they threw it around like candy.

For chrissakes JE Smith had been previously involved in another collision on the same type of liner (Olympic) cause of his negligence. His retirement was long overdue. Not to even mention the negligence of the Marconi staff by shutting up the only vessel nearby who was ONLY trying to help by warning them of a nearby ice field. Who cares they were tired. It was their job. So, they fixed it, and they were told not to. Thanks to it Bride saved himself!
Sam, sometimes it seems you’re trying too hard to excuse the negligent actions taken by the Titanic’s crew. They were plain negligent. And the fact they carried out their job is nothing outstanding. Twas’ their duty.

Here's why the Titanic's story will never die: (1) she was the world's biggest movable man-made object of her day, (2) she excelled in luxury, (3) she was on her maiden voyage (of all voyages), (4) there were many celebrities of the day on board, (5) there was already a lot of talk about all her features before she was ever launched (including the whole "unsinkability" talk), and (6) the Titanic is the first ship in living memory to be sunk by an iceberg. The Titanic shall always be in our minds despite herself; unlike the ship itself, the story remains unsinkable

For anyone to be mad at Ismay for hopping on lifeboat, when the 52,000 ton ship he was on is on its way to the bottom of the Atlantic (2.5 Miles Deep), in water that Is on the high 20s°, has to be out of their mind.

I have been a subscriber for a couple months now and always miss the live chat....damn....lol...but I have a video idea...I know you hear that all the time. I ran across something that I don’t think you have covered before. What happened after the Titanic. What became of the survivors. What all changed with over seas transportation? Lightoller and Dunkirk is the show I ran across that sparked that interest in me. What happened to the survivors how did they get on and go about life? I’m going to research things like this on my own but I think other people would find this interesting also. Some people like to be entertained and learn something at the same time. You do this very well....thank you. Few people will follow through and do research about the after. Just an idea. Keep up the good work. Thanks again. Dan.

Lord Mersey was tough during the inquiry proper but his report according to quite a few was very restrained. "It was colorless timid and cautious" they complained and they added "We had expected more backbone in Lord Mersey"
Hi Sam! You have GOT to read the book of transcripts of the Titanic inquiries! You just can't get the real witness' stories without reading exactly what the survivors experienced in their own words.

Could you do a video about the inquiry that happened after the titanic sunk? I can’t seem to find any good content around that. I wanted more timeline details about what happened during the inquiry and what the testimonies were.
Another great video. The White Star Line were using the law trying to get out of paying out victims, typical behaviour!! As for Ismay, the public needed a villain to vent their anger and disgust at, there he was, and his actions and the company's actions cemented it. Sam, I know I have asked before, could you do one about all the search attempts before Dr Ballard's discovery of the wreck? Including the alleged sonar discovery by the RN in 1977.

As managing director of the White Star Line, Ismay had the last say of how many lifeboats the Titanic carried. He thought they should carry room for less than half aboard.
Although the British Board of Trade mocked the Senate inquiries headed by William Auden Smith, they were in a precarious position as a member of the BBT certified the Titanic fit for travel after viewing the number of lifeboats before she sailed. Lord Mersey who headed the BBT inquiriny said that if Ismay had not stepped into the lifeboat he would only have added another number to those lost. However he told Ismay that the humblest immigrant had more right to a seat in the boats than he did.
