thank you so much for this lesson. I was in a trio with 2 amazing female singers in 1972 and we played this song in EAGDBE tuning. I wasn't aware of how much better it sounds in Joni's tuning. (In fact, our little group was called "Conversation.") Anyway, thanks again.
Dude ! I'm watching.. One of my early favorites of Joni's I'm uploading a Joni video on my channel in the morning. Thanks for this ( I was missing a couple of parts for years ) 🎵
Thank you for this! I just got hired to play in a Joni Mitchell Tribute band called, "Reckless Daughter". If you're ever in PDX (Portland Oregon) looks us up!
This is fantastic! I already play this but was missing the subtle nuances. Thank you so much! I’ll watch all your other videos now!!! (So much for ‘nobody watches’ Lol).
Home run JJ. I put Joni up there with Dylan and actually would listen to Joni's music, especially her jazzy 70's stuff over Dylan all day. When we lose her, we lose a legend.
How many artists receive or need 15 minutes from JJ? Joni is from her own universe. Thx for fleshing out the many subtle complexities of this super nova.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you so much. The original was in open E according to her long-time guitar tech and keeper of the obscure tunings. Same fingering.
I don’t have the Like function enabled. My videos weren’t submitted for anybody’s approval. I don’t care what people think of my playing - that keeps me sane.
To me she's in top five of all time, just an amazing talent. I love this early clip of her playing "All I want" th-cam.com/video/2AavxMdFiZo/w-d-xo.html
agreed. I like the no one watches ones too. lol. In case you missed it, I just ran into this one of a live radio performance. Gives a good feel on the right hand th-cam.com/video/z3kZlWiwo08/w-d-xo.html
beautiful music. it's a shame that she ruined her voice & looks w/all the smoking she did, but i will always b a joni mitchell fan. it takes a genius like her, to come up w/her own alternate tunings.
I feel sort of sorry for female singer-songwriters as they will always have to be compared to Joni Mitchell. And none of them come near, either in terms of writing, voice quality and guitar playing.
Ystadcop Not many men do either. Maybe Neil or Dylan or john martyn nick drake, Page, occasionally acoustic Springsteen might. But by en large they were in one or two tunings - martyn and drake many more - say open g or dropped d. Neil sometimes goes to baritone range. Joni however was all over the harmonic possibilities wasn't she. So Impressive with her hidden messages in the songs as well. The greats write for the times ahead. Joni was a technical genius and a visionary. The more I listen the more amazed I am by her ranges of tunings. I can't think of anyone like her? If she watches, which she may well, get well Joni. We'd love an ambient album.
You are correct. In 8th grade (1966) a guy came to speak to our school about this new science called lasers. He used different sounds to project a laser beam on the big screen at the stage that showed sound waves oscillating as light. All the sounds were a squiggly mess trying to make a circle. Then he said, "I want to show you sometime that shouldn't be possible." He played Joni Mitchell singing a cappella ... it showed a perfect calm circle moving in unison with her voice. It was amazing and a beautiful thing to see.
Hey Man, Great playing and thanks so much for the Vids. So very much appreciated!!! And I mean all of them.. I have followed many of your vids on your old channel as well.

Just getting into open tunings and seeing what a genius she was. What she can do with 2 or 3 chords is amazing!
Dude ! I'm watching.. One of my early favorites of Joni's

Joni's music transcends time.
One of my faves, thank you from Caernarfon, Gogledd Cymru 🏴
This is great! You nailed it. I’ve been trying to find one chord for years, and here it is! Thank you. ❤️🎸🎼
Always loved the line " I don't believe her"... brings me to the verge of tears. But I believe you..fantastic job. Thanks! MO
I love jonis music and tunings thanks for doing some Joni
Love the song. Thanks for sorting out the tuning. Always thought it was in another open tuning. My wife can sing it, I just have to play it.
a whole new world of tunings with Joni, great stuff!
My favorite Joni song 💕
Beautiful blend between your martin and joni's guitar..real nice..thanks JJ
Always loved this song.
I WATCHED AND LOVED IT.
Thanks for this! Have never seriously listened to Joni Mitchell prior to watching this and realize now what I've been missing. What a voice!!!
Thank you for this! I just got hired to play in a Joni Mitchell Tribute band called, "Reckless Daughter". If you're ever in PDX (Portland Oregon) looks us up!
Thanks for the lesson. I always wanted to play this song and now I can. I also like the lessons no one watches. You even recorded it on my birthday!
Beautiful JJ
Love this - thank you so much!! Just what I needed! You are very appreciated for doing this, just so you know!!
Also, wanted you to know that, thus far, I think your Joni Mitchell how-to video is the best I've seen...
This is so great, thanks! Love your Zep stuff too
Thank you so much for sharing.
I watched the video. Good job!
Saved me from a lifetime of wondering. Extraordinary stuff
Great Lesson James, thanks
Great 👍
Thanks man! This explanation on the strumming has also helped me understand how you’re playing coyote, you achieve a really nice rhythmic sound
That was a real treat! Thank you!
Thanks this is awesome! Cannot wait to try it out!
Watched it! Then read the lyrics. Great song and choice. Thanks.
Love using open D tuning. Adds whole new dimension. Thanks for the lesson
Thanks for the Joni. This video was very helpful. Always appreciate Joni 'how to play' lessons
This is fantastic! I already play this but was missing the subtle nuances. Thank you so much! I’ll watch all your other videos now!!! (So much for ‘nobody watches’ Lol).
Right on.
Thanks man
Thanks James - I am fairly new to your channel, but really having a lot of fun revisiting my guitar! This was a fun one!
Great tutorial. Thanks a lot
What a beautiful song
Excellent. Very appreciative. Thank you
I am watching!!!
Thanks for that. I'll appreciate any Joni lessons.
me too!
Me, too!! Thank you so much for this!
My first guess was open C. Deceptively simple...but a lot going on rhythmically. Along with Court and Spark one of my favorites of hers.
Home run JJ. I put Joni up there with Dylan and actually would listen to Joni's music, especially her jazzy 70's stuff over Dylan all day. When we lose her, we lose a legend.
I watch all your vids, man.
What a great lesson and info about Joni, really enjoyed the song. Your guitar does sound pretty amazing, thanks as always.
How many artists receive or need 15 minutes from JJ? Joni is from her own universe. Thx for fleshing out the many subtle complexities of this super nova.
Thank you for covering the guitar part for this amazing song. I'm going to try and cover it (wish me luck!)
Thank you!!
this is so great and so helpful!! thank you!!!
Thanks!!! This helped a lot! Great ear!
Thank you so much
Nice song, not a Joni fan but she sure is talented (as are you my friend)
Thx broski!!!
What are your capos of choice JJ? Both for electric and acoustic. I am in the market for the perfect ones. Thanks.
What counts are you muting the strums on?
I learned this lesson
ok , I thought that's why Gram wrote "our house" . it was about his relationship with her at the time.
That is why he wrote Our House. They lived together for a while, but never got married.
She wrote Willie about him (that was her nickname for Graham).
Excellent tutorial! Thank you so much. The original was in open E according to her long-time guitar tech and keeper of the obscure tunings. Same fingering.
It’s F# on the record he’s playing along with it
That D45 looks georgeous and great lesson btw! How long do you reckon you've had it for?
It's a D41, I got it new in 2006.
James James That's a good 11 years right there! :)
It's just starting to open up. Needs another 20 years or so!
James James Sounds incredible too!
A lesson for all you shredders!
wonder why you have so few likes and views. so lets like and comment to feed the mighty algorithm 🙂

I'm a watcher.
Good song, good guitar, but fucking great shirt!
I watched it
Stephen Pinder me too. Right on James James
there are still Joni fans despite all attempts to the contrary....thanky yet again
So much going on with the strumming hand....NEIL YOUNG! My god it doesn't even matter what is going on with the fretting hand when it come to Shakey.
His right hand is a metronome.
Definitely gotta have a loose wrist. Precision and fluidity.
Aaaw, I like the videos no one watches.
Nobody will watch? It's Joni Mitchell bro!
To me she's in top five of all time, just an amazing talent.
I love this early clip of her playing "All I want"
th-cam.com/video/2AavxMdFiZo/w-d-xo.html
was Joni married to Gram Nash??
They were a couple, but not married.
Graham still talks so highly of her.
