Your analysis of Rnd 5 is on point. I was rooting for Merab hard, I was very confident after Rnd 4 and in the fifth I was starting to sread the decision. I do give Umar the credit, he showed a lot of heart in the final round. But like you I also caught Merab looking at timer and then initiating the final attack. Based on the last minute of the final round, he definitely won it.
I am surprised about it too. Most of the Merab fights been very entertaining except of Aldo. Anytime when Merab fights he fights with heart! One thing that you can not take away from Merab is his fighting spirit.
I'm tired of casual fans disrespecting Merab's skills. Yes, there are many fighters with amazing cardio-though maybe not quite on Merab's level-but Merab is highly skilled, and people need to give him the respect he deserves. His timing, grappling, and wrestling are elite, and his stand-up game is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. As for the EPO nonsense, it needs to stop. Merab is Georgian; his cardio is in his genes, and it's the result of relentless hard work and training like a machine. Regarding the EPO accusations, Merab is one of the most-tested fighters in the UFC. I don’t remember who mentioned it, but I saw it in one of his teammate’s vlogs. They said Merab was tested three times before his last fight-not just the usual random tests, but three tests before that specific fight. Even if people argue that advanced testing can’t detect everything, at this level, almost everyone would be caught if they were using banned substances. Usman Nurmagomedov, for example, got caught. So, please, put some respect on Merab’s name. He doesn’t deserve all this disrespect for multiple reasons. @@DreamVoid7 Yes I agree, it’s very easy to just talk about his cardio and I tend to focus on it as well but his wrestling is so special. He outwrestled Umar and showcased a wide variety of techniques to ground him. His ground control, jiu jitsu, and striking technique aren’t great which is why we focus on his cardio because it’s so obviously GREAT but it’s not all he has or is. He has a phenomenal mind for fighting and the mental game is the most important part.
Being an actual threat on the ground would mean more. Just getting takedowns in mma is silly, he needs to do something with them. That's all I can wish for him. Umar's face has no marks, this shouldn't be the case in a 5 rnd fight.

I wouldn't say big dogged Umar. If he did dmg sure, but he did nothing with the takedowns, something that's always lacked in Merab's game. No sub threat and no gnp, had his takedowns stuffed in the early rnds, then the laters rnds when he started getting them, they would get reversed anyways. Umar breathing heavy and Merab being a showman doesn't equal dog walking someone down (unless there's a misunderstanding of the definition here), esp when his face is the one that looks badly dmged and Umar's doesn't. 5th rnd Umar had a second wind and was winning, up until the last 30secs. Merab put way more effort and had a lot of grit to persevere through Umar no doubt. If he can only be an actual threat, not just a cardio machine, he'd be legendary.
I am really sick and tired everyone talks about only Merabs cardio. Merab had the greatest tactic and striking as well. Hes a monster. I think Volkanovski cardio is better. But, Merab has evrything what needed to defeat that arrogant guy 🇦🇺🇬🇪💪💪

I was wondering the same, I think when you take the amount of takedowns attempted, defended, and scrambles and get ups involved in this fight, it might have been a more intense pace. Lots of fighters have great cardio when they are allowed to dictate the pace and the terms of engagement of a fight. Sean Strickland was hailed for amazing cardio at one time because he can jab and teep all day, but he was blowing hard fighting Dricus because he didn't get to control the fight. It's debatable, I think I too side with Merab vs Yan in terms of an inhuman physical effort of work completed in 25 minutes, but his performance vs Umar was right up there. The Machine 👏

Damage is only one of the 3 key criteria in the judging system. Aggressiveness and Cage Control plays a huge part as well. Especially, during very close fights...
