- How razor clams tried to "escape", how to cleaning razor clams
Razor Clam season for 2015 started out very strong. We went out to the beach at Sunset Beach State Park in Northern Oregon coast, dug our limit for 4 person withing 90 mins. Here's some video on the digging and cleaning of razor clams. Also on how razor clams dig themselves back into the sand, kinds of interesting, thought it will be fun to share with folks on TH-cam. And the way I clean these clams.

What a fun video! Seems like you and your family had a great time digging (and eating) the clams. It made me happy to watch you guys having so much fun! Great video.
Wow the beach is very neat and clean.

Aww :) what a cute family finding razor clams all together! Your daughter is so cut!
Thank you for sharing this video! It was fun to see you and your family clamming, and brought back so many wonderful, wonderful memories of me with my family. We spent every summer down at the Oregon coast with our clam guns doing exactly this! When your children get older, they will recall this experience with such fond memories; as I do of my time with my parents when I was younger (I’m 49 now). Much love, Shelbie =) 💜💋
Thank you for the kind comments, glad to see you enjoy watching it!
1:37 This is so satisfying how the water just sinks to the bottom
Great video! I don't really eat clams, but the whole journey is fascinating to watch.
To all the comments telling them to leave the clams alone:
They are collecting clams to eat. They aren't collecting them for no reason. Just like people raise and kill cows to eat. You might as well leave the cows alone if you want them to leave the clams alone.
Which is exactly what we should do. Leaving the clams unharmed and leaving the cows unharmed.

Yo recommendations but just wondering if'd do the same to some human why that would be considered as crime then.

I saw one just a second ago
This video is so satisfying😍 what people eat is a choice. If you eat meat, good for you, but that doesn’t mean you should go shove meat down a vegetarians throat. If you’re vegan, good for you, that doesn’t mean you should make other people eat like you. Everyone eats differently and it’s just like different personalities. As long as we aren’t forcing the way we eat onto someone else it is totally ok. You guys are freaking out with the whole vegans vs meat eaters but who cares how we eat. As long as we are happy with what we are eating, it doesn’t matter. Don’t force your eating habits on others because it’s not cool. Nobody likes it and it makes you look like a tweak.
where did this speech come from like the opisite of the vid XD
Roch Cabler huh
Roch Cabler because people in the comment section are arguing about it, but I agree with this comment

even animal get extinct because of eating its ok.Right.I am not talkimg about clam but other animals and fishes.First eat and make them extinct then cry about it that it got extinct.
To all the people saying this is cruel, this is the way of life. I'm not trying to you guys down in any way shape or form but it not considered animal abuse. It's just like having to kill a cow for us humans, It's like killing a deer for wolves, and its like eating a warm for fish. Yes it is sad to see animals go but they aren't just being wasted, they are you going to a purpose and that is why you must respect the animals that you have taken the lives from. Those clams probably lived a good life, yes they have to stay away from predators and different things, but isn't that like us humans as well? They served their purpose and now it is time for them to go and rejoin all the others. Again not trying to put down anyone, but I felt like this needed to be heard.
Umm it’s kinda cruel because they ate steak two hours ago
Nobody New Mk?
@@nobodynew1621 Yes they did, but it doesn't mean they aren't ever going to eat again.

There's a great video it's amazing how fast they can dig their self back into the ground
This is one of the reasons I am thinking of moving to Oregon. Where else can you get free food like these clams or the dungeness/rock crabs they have their? All you have to do is show up..do a small amount of work..and bam..free food! Plus..you get to live in a beautiful state full of natural beauty and forests. Thanks so much for this video!
You cant take too much though :)

I know this is an old video but this is really cool. Living in the PNW I’ve grown a lot more curious about living off the land in ways like this. I’ve shrimped before which was fun, but I’d like to try this myself. Looks fun!
Thank you for taking the time to show this!
I feel bad that they keep trying to go back inside :'(
And yet we eat them

In my opinion, I hate watching them let the clams sink! Love these videos
The Pulling out is so satisfying
I've been digging clams my whole life. . The foot, as he calls it, we call it the digger, is absolutely the best part. You dredge in eggs and flour, or cracker crumbs and fry them very quickly. The necks are tough so they make good chowder. Make it to take the shells off by dipping in boiling water for just a few seconds till the shell opens. Then immediately in Coldwater. If you leave them in a bucket overnight with sea water in it, not enough to cover them totally, they will purge the sand out of their bodies. And they are not the kind of creature that we shouldn't be eating unless the Fish and game department says not to because at certain times they have bacteria. They are testing constantly
I think one of the only times to be worried are if it's not in a verified as safe area, there could be a waste outlet nearby for example. Another example to be wary about are red tides.
We would keep them in ocean water for a few days in a tub and put in cornmeal. They'll eat the corn meal and spit out the sand so that it's all good to eat.
That's clever
Do you still cut them open and wash them?
@@Xrelent I actually don't know, it was my uncle who would do that. He just told me that's how you get the sand out.

You know I really enjoy seeing videos like these, the first time I came across this video it was maybe a year back? Though I had watched it at like 4 in the morning on a school night, for me it’s like this weird fever dream 😂
I've always wondered how people dig for clams. I'm not a fan of shellfish (except fresh crab), so I've never had the desire to explore this until a recent discussion made me curious. Looks like a fun family outing! I loved the part when the clams were digging in the sand and shooting the sand through their siphon :-) They are a lot faster than I would've imagined! Great video!
it's cool that you utilize other parts of the clam for bait instead of discarding it.
your family is so cute! awesome vid n very satisfying haha
thank you!
did anyone else see at 1:38 when she was pulling the sand out it was getting dried up around it
Gilberto Soto yes and I found it satisfying
The sand is completely saturated with water as 'wet sand' meaning that's probably nearly the level the tides at right now. You'll notice when you dig a hole at the beach that it'll eventually fill with water even without adding any, this happens when you reach a height that's about equal to the tide level! The sand beneath the dry top layer is level with the water and when you create an empty pocket, it'll just fill with water as the sand is completely permeable.
In this video, when they remove all that sand the water from the 'wet sand' rushes to fill the space. It all eventually equals out again as the ocean slowly rises back to saturate it all over.
Suddenly this video pops on my recomendation, how great!😂

Oh god these look beautiful 😭😭 my home is the northeast coast of the US and I've grown up on clams and mussels. I'm away for school right now but can't wait to come back and get some nice clams
I used to do this with my dad as a kid when the season opened up. I'd just dig my feet into the sand and could feel them that way then I'd dig by hand. Sometimes I'd find them in clusters
I used to find them with my bare feet, too, as a kid with my Dad. We called them piss clams because of the way the siphon would shoot water out. When we got enough, we'd boil them up in water to make a broth, them add butter. Yum!
Something about clams is disturbing to me
@Kecuwa Boyd I saw a video in my recommended about a clam licking salt I was like wtf how clams aren't even alive they're just shells and now I'm scared and I honestly wanna cry help

Good job, Brother. The Great Spirit provides for use all, but few understand his teachings.
i don't live anywhere near the coast so seeing stuff like this is really nice. It seems like a fun activity for the family, and kids are learning about where their food comes from, which is pretty important.
I'm curious about regulations tho, like are most people digging for clams in a sustainable manner bc they know how to or are there regulations to ensure that the number of clams doesn't go down too much?

There's almost always a legal limit on amount hunted or fished on public land. Ofc there are degenerates that think they're above the limit, but the legal limit is still there for law abiding citizens.

*Guys clams dont feel anything, most of the time they dont even know what's going on. They don't feel pain and it's the circle of life*
So why if ya murder human just like that is considered as crime and not circle of life?

@Julio Aragão actually human meat doesn't cause any disease. There's no chemical in human meat that cause disease to other human
@@TonyStark-nl7nd Because humans are the ones who criminalized murder, so that protection only applies to humans. A clam has no empathy, doesn't really form bonds, and could care less if its mates are killed as long as its still living.

Nothing wrong. Just a lot of waste clipping the clam like that. You should have guts and meat. No need for this. Old fashion pearing knife.

Why is everyone judging them so much?
We are humans, we are at the top of the food chain, we eat or use almost everything around us... If you dont like it, well thankfully You can now become a vegan and not die of hunger, so do it...
But dont come judging this people and this activity just because...
And in a video that was posted 5 years ago
Who told you that humans are at top of the food chain??🤔perhaps you should re read middle school life science book...O_o
@@arunabhadas4927 ok then who is it? You can teach me right here and right now, please.
I mean you know, i better ask you then and correct what i said... Right?
We learn something everyday, maybe i can learn something new from you today. Excuse me for saying something wrong...
Now, Who is in the top of the food chain?
(Excuse my english tho)
I am pretty sure when you are thinking humans at the top of the food chain you're thinking like"Oh ..we are humans..we can kill anything or anyone by our weapons"..But when you're using the term food chain it doesn't consider these artificial weapons as hunting tools..I think you can figure out the rest by yourself..If I'm wrong anyhow.. please correct my words..
@@arunabhadas4927 the fact that you asume how i think is really wrong, because i never talked about the weapons and tools we use, but more about the way we use almost everything around us to survive. Maybe its not the food chain and i apologise for using the wrong term. But that is my point...
Humans use or consume most of the things in an environment...
Ofc we can't kill or consume everything just our hands because we dont have claws or sharp teeth like other animals do have and help them catch their food and consume easly, we do need a lot of things to finally catch food... We cant eat raw either, so you are right, we are not at the TOP thanks to our characteristics, but because of the tools we've used and even with them most of us wouldn't be able to survive for long if we had to fight for our own food.
Thanks for the correction.
Sorry but that's a common misconception..so I thought you also assume that thing..and thanks..but I don't quite understand what you're trying to say at the end about surviving.

I didn't know clams got that huge! Ive only eaten about 3/4 wide clams at restaurants.
Maybe they're grown in Aquaculture farms or in open ocean, so they're smaller due to a concentration in space? Or some restaurants just serve the foot.
