Will he scam me? Test for Cambodia driver

I did a little experiment to see if a tuk tuk driver would try to scam me.
They have a bad reputation so I was curious to how much they would price gouge me vs a ride share app.
I assumed they would try and charge more since I looked like a noob tourist. It was only a question of how much more in my mind.
So I hailed a random tuk tuk from a big market and asked him to take me on a short trip to Lucky supermarkets which I tested on a ride share app and saw cost 3000 riels (75 cents usd).
In Vietnam I often wanted to help out older xe om motorbike taxi drivers whose bikes were too dilapidated to qualify for Grab or who didn’t have smartphones to be able to do ride share. I knew they were short of work because technology was making them obsolete and they didn’t get much customers apart from regulars and old people.
But each time I tried they would price gouge me to the max. A 15k trip would become 50k.
So it was hard to support them in the end.

The tuktuk drivers have a bad reputation in Thailand too but the first day I was there I had a great experience . I got off the BTS(sky train) and asked a tuktuk driver where my hotel was, he said very close and he will take me for free. I thought it might have been a scam but I trusted my gut instinct and went with him. 5min later we arrived and he refused to take my money. I got his phone number and ended up giving him heaps of business. I dont know if he was a good business man or just being kind, either way it worked out for both of us.

TukTuk drivers in Cambodias are hit and miss, but in my experience, I think there are more honest than dishonest drivers. Kudos on tipping the honest ones.

remember, tuk tuk cost more because of gasoline, the passapp are using natural gas cheaper. plus tuk tuk always looking to hit a home run.

Drivers in Thailand are very honest and have some very cool painted tuktuks. Of course there are always a few giving the majority a bad name.
