3 Prong Sesh - Knife Jaw, Moana Kali, and Uku? - Hawaii Spearfishing

- I've been so focused on dialing in my roller that I decided to just take the 3 prong out for a spin. I totally forgot how fun they are! I nailed a 9 pound Knife Jaw, Moana Kali, huge Roi, and snagged a lobster on my way in. I came super close to shooting a nice Uku, but I couldn't process the headshot quick enough.. I also took a drop on a huge Kamanu (Rainbow runner) and he literally came back 10 minutes later with a big Sandbar Shark who wouldn't leave me alone. It was like he brought back up to a fight. Every time I turned around the shark was there. I decided to try and feed it a huge Roi, thinking it would would take a while for the shark to chew it up so I could create some distance. But the shark grinded it in one bite! The weather turned for the worse, so I was over it after that...

Famous last words: "don't feed sharks...LMAO!!!" That buggah in da gray suit no like leave you alone after he got some free Roi's on his lunchtime menu. Those Knife Jaws are really weird fish. I saw Ryan Myers nail some w/Justin Lee a while back, they were up in Kohala I'm guessing, but they looks of where they were diving. I've never seen them any time on da Kona side, had plenty dive trips w/my uncles and pops and none of them ever brought any back. We dove from Kohala to Ka'u and never had one. Good eating or what? Try get some and do one catch n cook bumbye! Great video again!

@@hawaiihammahs Oh nevermind. That one video when you dove near Kailua Pier, outside the harbor and got Cig when your sushi chef bud made Uku sashimi, that was brutal. Yeah, back in the day was still risky to eat reef fish raw. Uku like Ulua, they chomp on those small kine reef fish and thus, Cig is there. But, I never heard anyone really ever getting Cig if they cook the fish all the way thru. Cuz I've only seen you grind Uku from da wok or off da grill.

another good one bro, thanks for sharing! I have the same issues with sharks, the whole reason that shark was following you is because some other guy probably fed it before. I learned my lesson and dont let them have any fish anymore, their feeding just ends up attracting more of them, not mention it makes them associate spearos with food, thats something none of us needs. Nice footage, as a noob I've learned a lot. I especially liked the stalk - aim - advance - poke technique.
It looks like prongs disperse better with this method of sharpening compared to cone shape and result in stronger fish hold.
Why not use a fish box?
Fish box? I forgot my belt kui which is a string with a metal barb at the end. It holds the fish. That’s what we use in Hawaii
@@hawaiihammahs Fish box is basically a cooler that floats on the surface and keeps fish inaccessible for sharks and off your body.

Hey Jason, I see people say they roi have cig and they chum them or whatever. I’ve seen some people eat them. My question is do they have more cig than other reef predators? They look tasty.
It’s hard to say. I know a guy who eats them all the time and never got sick. He eats them from the same area though. I know a guy who ate one and got really sick. Kinda risky if you ask me, but a small one should be okay. I don’t really know though
One more question on cig. Have you ever known anyone that seemed immune to cig? In other words, they ate the same fish as everyone else. Everyone else gets sick and they don’t? @@hawaiihammahs

Hey is there any reason why three prongs are preferred for smaller species of fish?
You can shoot them at a closer range and not have to worry about your shaft going into the reef. Alot more fun and super accurate
