I'm hijacking top comment but come to Texas. Austin has had over 100 F for 70 straight days. We probably have at least 10 days to go with the current forecast. We barbecue outside on Christmas. We joke that we can't wait for your weather at 94 F. The tragedy in Greece in Hawaii is horrible. I'm not making light of that.

Hi 30°c in a boat in the summer in the med that is normal. You are just complaining to much. My recommendation is sell the boat and by house with air conditioning.

As someone who lives in a relatively warm climate (88°F is winter temps) you installed those fans the wrong way around, all they'll do is push hot air around, what you really want the fans to do is suck the hot air from the boat and blow it out the hatches, so a fan in the centre deck hatch blowing up and turn the others around to blow out the open-able port lights, also you want shade over the hatches and a wet cloth over the forward hatch with a slow water drip on it, the damp cloth will cool the air as it comes in the forward hatch (that's why you need a water drip on it, to keep it damp), basically you want to turn your whole cabin into a giant evaporative cooler (what people used before air-conditioning)

you re right but inside is not air hot, material gets hot.. so you need a cooling down wind, to your body. believe me. thats your concern is when inside air is hot. if the walls are hot... you cannot cool down anything.

In the summer, we slept on top of the forward cabin in Italy due to the heat. But it was so pretty to see the town lights. We would come back from a trattoria and have a bottle of wine and watch the sky and town lights. It was the best of life.

bonjour sailing project atticus. every saturday afternoon for me, if i'm not working, i watch your vidéos. today's vidéo was alive and real. the portrait on the greek family and their farm was better than any nature show that i've ever seen. two thousand year old trees. the greek empire was still kicking back then. it's a testiment too about the awesome reality of nature and of our earth. as a believer of creation, what a life-time gift is olive oil. thanks again for the vidéo, and if i may suggest, wear lighter clothes and non dark color clothes. white swimming attire or the like. when i'm home in the south of France, it's light yellow or white for me. i love the heat, but i know how to regulate the heat being a former inhabitant of southern california. cheers

Beautiful coverage of the Greek family and their ancient family agriculture. For me, you've now surpassed several other sailing channels I used to prefer (not that it's a contest). Gotta say that Dimitri was an absolute gem. I remember 40 years ago when I was 12 years old we went to Greece as a family and we listened to story from the old Greeks fishermen none of which has as many fingers as they were born with and it was an exquisite part of my early life. It seems that the tradition of sharing and telling of story and knowledge is still a real part of the culture and it is wonderful. I applaud you on finding the positives at the time of great trial and tribulation for the Greek people where their tourist economy has been decimated by the fires. I am glad you reminded us that even in difficult times there’s traditions going back to the earliest biblical times, as some of those trees have done, are kept in the minds a folks today.
With this video your transcend from the sailing vlog through the travel vlog to the cultural vlog.
May your eyes be ever captured by the wonders of humanity and of this planet we have dominion of…

Hi guys ... a windscoop for the forward hatch would be great. Also, have a shade canvas made for the boat and hang it when you are stopped. It should cover the forward part of the boat and you can make it go around the mast to shade the salon area, also. However, with a baby on board and a wife that suffers from heat, AC would be a worthwhile addition. They are not too expensive and worth their weight in gold. If you are gonna be around the equator, it is almost mandatory. Love your channel .,.. actually, my very favorite !!

I knew a welder that got a contract to work on the pipelines in Saudi Arabia...he got to his jobsite with a jug with cold drinks to beat the heat...during work and the breaks the locals drank hot tea, and somehow thier bodies covered in loose clothing and drinking hot tea refreshed them.
This story stuck with me...and same as those cool fans you installed, maybe it is the right time to see if the hot tea does the trick..the tour on the vineyard was super cool, it enriched the episode.

Great episode. Made me feel a bit homesick. I grew up in central Pennsylvania and my relatives came to PA with the group of Dutch along with William Penn. Our family farm (My bro and his son, and son's son live there now) started in 1747. Soon it will be 300 years of Fetterman's on that land. Almost all, farmers. I am an outlier, visiting Kenya as a kid, and criss crossing the country for decades. I live in WA now. an realizing at the time it was a tough life on the farm, and Iwould love sailing the world, but I am glad I grew up that way.

Another possibility is pump water from deep to a radiator to copl air or use it to spray the deck directly. It would only be temporary relief. but would be perfect for emergency relief. Use the cool the cold water to help the boat to cool. A garage sun shade would help cool the deck. Buy a garage sun shade and spray it with deep water to make a huge cover use PVC and make a hoop house! It would act like a large evaporative cooler! You could even use small sprayer like misters to keep the garage shader wet. You should be able to drop temp. considerably!

They are lying! The data shows that not only this was one of the wettest summers we ever had (June had way above normal rainfall almost across the whole country- juxtaposed to a multidecadal baseline) but also one of the coolest.
August temperatures are often into the 40C and this year were something like 35-36 even 31s-32s. We had a few heatwaves during July but that's every year for as far back as I can have access to weather data. There were far hotter years in the distant past but the media love scaremongering and clickbaits.

It's called weather and it goes up and down. This year we had the Tonga volcanic eruption in the South Pacific and a new El Nino. The eruption increased water vapor in the planet's atmosphere by about 10% if not more! Water vapor is theoretically a greenhouse gas and the most abundant in the atmosphere. There's one source of this year's warming, right there!

You need a "Fantastic Fans or 2". We use them in RV's, but you could mount it in one of the hatches, which is similar to hatch in an RV. Mount it in the forward hatch and it will pull fresh air from the other hatches that are open. It would create a fresh air circulation on the inside. Not just any fan, go with "Fantastic Fan" They are low impact to on Batteries.

Hi guys, regarding strainer issue. Look at ordinary home pools strainers, they usually have one or more strainers. An example of the idea is taking domestic water particle filtration vessel (like the ones that come with the RO water makers) and instead of placing a filter , make a cylindrical wire basket and cover it with some kind of polyester cloth or cheese cloth type so as to allow a good flow of water and yet not be haunted by clogging. Hope that makes sense, is doable and works for yall. Creative adaptive solutions

If it's hot and winds are light, tie your anchor rode to your stern cleats and let the companionway/cockpit/aft part of boat face into the wind. Yeah, white hull and deck will help too. If you rig a sunshade it should be porous to let hot air escape up through the fabric. We made ours from two layers of weed block material. Blocks the sun and lets hot air escape up.

Engineers! SHEESH! As an engineer, I believe that I can comment. Yes, the strainer should be before the check valve. I'll say that we have so much to deal with during a design that is both time and cost limited. I've made those mistakes. I've also corrected other engineer's mistakes. But you are correct, the strainer should come before the check valve that collects all of the debris. Move the check valve!

DES, IMPORTANT HEAT HELP, - put ice rolled in a light dish towel and let it dampen. Then put the towel on the back of the neck. As a carpenter on those hottest days I learned this trick. The back of the neck has many nerve endings. It has worked for me. I hope it works for you.

Defender has a Breeze Booster for the port lights which has a screen. I recommend you get those.

Yes, a couple of wind scoops for the hatches and an awning over the boom will really cool things down!

Hey Atticus, love this episode also. great info about the boat. I just came back from Greece in July 2023 and know exactly how your feel about trying to escape that heat. Best time is September. Did that in 2022. Isa so beautiful and always wishing you all the best. Hi Orsu too.

While you guys are dealing with the heat I am sitting in an Airconditioned Apartment in the states we did not have AC growing up just getting dad to turn on the attic fan was a big deal. You don't really remember the sweltering as much as the methods that brought simple relief. Isabella will have unique memories growing up when she starts to talk it will be interesting.

Hey folks; you could build a natural AC system by using deep cooler water and a very small electric pump at the surface to create a venturi effect pump to bring the cool water up you could let that water run passively over the boat hull or build a copper pipe radiator effect and a fan will cool the interior off in no time.
Copper pipe is best and you can build it in a day. All you are doing is forcing cool water up from the depths to cool your boat.
A very small electric pump will work.
Remember; you are not pumping water directly from the depths you are drawing the up by using the discharge of the pump only.
I build these when I have a barge or ship I'm salvaging from the bottom and have to build a dredge system.
I'm going to build one and mount it on the hull of my boat.

I lived in Greece in the late 70's/early 80's. Temperatures of 115 DegF were common, also have picture evidence of wild fires burning in the hills that required days of water bombers to put out. Weather patterns are cyclical, this is NOT new, just "new" to the younger generation who are being duped into believing that "this is not normal".

Thanks for sharing your adventures. Find a way to mount a fan in the mid hatch, blowing out, to keep the air moving.

I guess the question everyone will be asking is why can't an ac unit be installed on atticus? There are some excellent units now that run on 12 volt and are so efficient they can run on a moderate solar system. It would be a great project to watch.

We just added 800ah of lithium and connected it all to the CruiseAir. Not particularly efficient but we are cool at anchor when needed. With our solar and the Balmar we can still be energy positive. Combine that with a sunshade and those fans and you’re good to go. Great episode!
