    Hi, For me the biggest must haves in a fermentor is being able to pressure ferment, closed transfer and O2 free dry hopping. This unit cant easily perform those tasks so it s a no thanks for me. I am loving the Fermzilla fermentors right now and they are really super affordable. I also really like to see my beer while it ferments. 100% not necessary but still important for me. Cheers and great vids as always!

    Definitely a great price point. I'm not so worried about pressurized fermentation but would want to be able to pressure transfer to try and reduce as much oxidation chance as possible, similar to how you did it with the Anvil bucket. Also, how is the black plastic piece attached to the main body? Any concerns with it holding up over time?

      I believe you can do the pressure transfer the same way that I do on the buckets. I'm not 100% sure how the plastic part is attached. It definitely feels sturdy and I don't see any issues over time with it. I've had the buckets for quite a while and they are holding up just fine. 👍🍻

    This or the delta fermtank for making homemade wine? Would the dump valve and more cone shape on the anvil help more with dumping the wine sediment instead of needing to rack?

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers

      You can do a pressurized transfer with this vessel I do it with their buckets all the time. Can’t argue with that price tag! Curious how the temp control will work though. For a 14 gallon fermenter, the coil used for the immersion chiller seems a bit small. Would probably be tough to ferment a lager with only ice water. Love that they were able to get a butterfly valve and conical bottom for so cheap!

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers
      @ShortCircuitedBrewers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you're going to mount that inside the conical permanently?

    • @jeffreylahaye1238
      @jeffreylahaye1238 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShortCircuitedBrewers The Blichmann HERMS coil has weldless bulkhead connections, so it's semi-permanent ... but very easy to disassemble for periodic thorough cleaning and changing out of the O-rings. It WILL require drilling 2 holes in the sidewall of the conical, so it's a permanent modification of the vessel. Again, this is the same cooling configuration as SS Brewtech uses on their Chronical BME. I'll essentially have all the functionality of the 14 gal SSB Chronical with cooling for less than $450 all-in.
      I have 3 of the Anvil Buckets that I modified in this same fashion with smaller coils and they work great - did those 2+ years ago before Anvil came out with their cooling accessory option. I made my own neoprene jackets as well with velcro closures. I can lager and cold crash to mid-30's in my garage in NC in summertime no problem using a hydroponics/aquarium cooling chiller (Active Aqua).

    If this fermenter had a tri-clamp racking port, a thermowell port and an option for an upgraded lid, I'd gladly pay a little more and grab this over the blichman. But alas this has one or two little deal breakers for me and the price point I think is too low. It's half the price of it's competition. I think with a few more small upgrades and $50 dollar higher price, they could have really had something here. Very close though.

  • @jasonamsden2863
    @jasonamsden2863 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am not really sure what the amazing delta's are between this unit and their bucket. Without being able to do a pressure transfer above 1-2PSI like the bucket you are basically paying over double to be able to dump trub (with the introduction of oxygen I assume). Given modern knowledge of not needing to do secondary vessel fermentation (trub separation) there does not appear to be much additional value there. I love my Anvil buckets but this is a total fail without pressure fermentation. People may scream yeast collection but overbuilding starters is a super clean and easy way; especially when you consider dry hopping and the impact on clean yeast harvest. Brian I love your videos, but knowing what I do now being fairly neutral in your opinion is not serving the community by just flashing a quick text disclosure the unit does not do pressure fermentation. It is a fairly big deal; especially compared to the cost deltas when buying the bucket versus this.

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers
      @ShortCircuitedBrewers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are plenty of ways to dump trub without oxygen introduction. I have used a cold crash guardian in many instances and had no introduction of oxygen. I certainly understand your opinion on the pressure fermentation aspect, however the engineering and additional equipment needed raises the price point well beyond the level this fermenter is. Not every yeast benefits from pressure fermentation. I don't know why people think that is the"end all, be all" in fermentation these days. Sure if all you brew are NEIPA then you pressure ferment everything. Sure over building a starter is a good way to harvest yeast, but that also adds to equipment costs outside of having a fermenter. But hey to each their own. I just present the product if you want it fine, if you don't fine. It's up to the person purchasing it to decide. 👍🍻

      I think your criticism is fair for the 7 gal version, but I think the 14 gal unit at $325 is a steal ... which is why I bought it and just received it. I have 3 of the Anvil buckets, bought the first over 2 years ago and have been VERY happy with them. I wanted a vessel for 10 gal batches and this was too good to pass up. No way at the price point you could ever expect pressure fermentation out of this vessel. There is way too much engineering and design that would be involved to make this a pressure capable vessel. You mentioned Blichmann, they are coming out with the G4 fermenter which I will be reviewing as well. It will have all of the bells and all the whistles but not at that price point. Anvil or delta fermenter?

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers
      @ShortCircuitedBrewers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the Anvil crucible you're really not comparing apples to apples. The Delta ferm tank is a great piece of equipment but the bottom dump is not a true yeast harvesting device. As stated on their website and in my testing it's more of a clean out port. One advantage the Delta has over the crucible is the cooling system is better than the Crucible. And the footprint is smaller on the ferm tank. It kind of comes down to what your end goal is and how much space you have, And if you are wanting to do traditional lagering techniques. For simple ale fermentation either for mentor will work very well. I know that's not a straight answer but I would rather give you the pros and cons of each and let you make up your mind based on your needs. 👍🍻

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers
      @ShortCircuitedBrewers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only you can do that. Some would argue getting the beer off of the yeast will improve it. One other plus is that you can dump some of the trub prior to fermentation for a possibily cleaner fermentation and less haze in the final product. 👍🍻

      @@ShortCircuitedBrewers Brian, I get all that. But truth is that I have tasted many home brews, as I am sure you have. Some of the best I have experienced are fermented in a bucket. I think the home brew world has gotten smitten with gadgets. And that's fine. I am not judging. If someone wants to drop $$$ on cool stuff, then I wish them the best. But lets face it, it's not gadgets that make great beer.

      No I just did that because I have a really serious problem with my hands right now cracking in the winter time and if I do any kind of manual stuff it makes it worse. too many years in the auto body industry working with chemicals and no gloves on.
