Fitting a Nitron NTR1 Rear Shock!! | 22 Honda CB1000R Neo Sports Café

- After almost 1000miles, I'd had enough of the standard rear shock, it's quite simply not good enough.
So a quick call to Harwood Performance Store aka Bike HPS, and a Nitron NTR1 rear shock built to my spec was on it's way. It took 4 weeks from ordering to arrival, and about an hour to fit.
There was an utter panic moment when the top bolt didn't seem to fit, but a little persuasion sorted it. Honda put an extra layer of cheap anodising on it, yeah thanks big H!
After a quick test ride, the bike feels loads better. It's not kicking me out the seat all the time, nor taking 100 metres to recover after a high speed compression.

The jury's still out regarding exhausts. I don't mind the standard can and I can get a carbon finisher to replace the standard black plastic one. The downpipes and collector on the other hand are ugly as F**K, so if I change anything it'll be them.
So I've been a busy boy as you can see. Don't worry there's plenty more to come.

Thanks for the video! Although, its all personal preference on ride characteristics, yet, from reviewed your suspension comparison section of the video, I do believe, you had OVER adjusted your OEM shocks (way too harsh/stiff --- perhaps by your weight, but, you could have backed the adjustment)...Oh well, best wish on your new shock and enjoy!

Ref the shock adjustments, I went about it the same way as I always do using static sag as my initial way of adjusting. On factory settings, with the rebound adjuster fully open, there was almost 70mm of static sag, which is way too much. I normally aim for between 20 to 30mm and adjust using preload until I'm within those numbers. Even on full preload there was still over 30mm of sag, and with no compression adjustment available, I had no way of slowing the shock compression down, so I knew almost straight away it was going to be an issue.
Admittedly I'm a bit heavier than your average Honda test rider, 120kgs in full bike kit, and the roads we ride on aren't exactly smooth. The biggest problem was the standard shocks inability to deal with more than one input. Bumps or throttle inputs by themselves weren't an issue, but a bump as you were driving out of the corner would make the shock bottom out and it had me out the seat and almost off the bike on more occasions that I was happy with.
It was the worst factory shock I've ever encountered, especially on a 'premium' Honda product with a fair chunk of power and torque. In fact it was worse than the shock on Mrs Moto's 2010 Kawasaki ER-6F, which had her bouncing all over the road after 2 weeks of having it.
The Nitron felt like overkill initially, but once I learned to trust it, I never had another problem with the back end of the bike again. I made a single click of adjustment from the settings it arrived with, and I will always go with Nitron if I ever needed a replacement in the future.
Having said that, all the shock did was slowly reveal the issues with the front end, and despite changing the springs, fork oil and adjuster stacks, I never really got it into a place I was happy with. The CB was meant to be my forever bike, it was the first new bike I'd ever owned, and I only kept it because I felt guilty admitting a £12,000 motorcycle was well, a bit shit.
It's a mute point now though, as the CB is gone, and a 2009 Yamaha Tracer 900GT has replaced it. No it's not new, but I've done a thousand miles on it, set the suspension up the same way, and would you believe it not had any issues so far, even running full luggage and then some going up to Hartside Pass to film stuff.
If I had more time and energy, I'd probably complain to Honda about the CB not being fit for purpose as a UK model, but Honda have now binned it and replaced it with the CB1000 Hornet, which looks like an early Z1000 concept, and has even less premium parts to change. I was well under the maximum subframe capacity as a rider in full kit with a bag or box on the back, and I can only begin to imagine what the bike would be like with a pillion, horrendous is about right I reckon.
What was I supposed to do, buy a 140hp 80+ft-lb naked bike and tootle about using 20% throttle and not going on bumpy roads? Behave, yes it was ridden fairly hard, but nothing daft, and as I head rapidly towards 50, a lot less hard than it would have 20 years ago. If you've got one and you love it, I'm very jealous of you, and I wish I could have done. But the bike is a bitsa, made from cheap parts thrown together without any real cohesion. Yes it looks nice, yes the controls and dash feel quality, but it doesn't gel like a Street Triple RS or MT-10.
I doubt I'll ever buy a Honda again, especially after the kick in the nuts trading it in. Each mile cost over £1.50 in depreciation alone, the bike market doesn't seem to like them very much at all, and I'm afraid I feel the same way.

Would you say it's more of a comfort shock or preformance? Or perfect blend?
I've had kyb and it's more preformance than comfort.
I know öhlins can be a good blend of both, but in japan it's sooo much more money
so i'm getting tired of messing around with the shock...
how is the situation when a pillion is on it to?
i'm 95kg with gear about 100... i've had it set to stage 9 , with half a turn back from soft on the preload , when my wife is on it , it feels like a bump causes the suspenion to bottom out , but it's the spring i guess...
@user-ob5ss8xk1b it'll be a combination of the lack of damping adjustment and a spring rate that is too low for both you and your pillion.
My spring rate is set for 120kgs rider, and I ran 4 clicks in from fully open with another 16 clicks to go. I've had it fully loaded, 50l top box and 2 x 45l kit bags, and the shock never flinched once. It's an expensive upgrade, but it made the bike so much better.
The CB is gone now, and I stripped all the bits off. The rear shock will be going on Ebay on Monday. I did maybe 1800 miles with it on, and it's like new.
Hey man, nice video, I have the cb1000r 2021, and yes the rear shock is very bad, I ride a bit aggressively and need stability.
So I was thinking of getting the ohlins, but they come in gold color and my bike is the black edition, so I then I thought of the nitron the black model, but I'm not sure if it fits the 2021 model.
So what nitron model are you using?
And also did you tune the suspensions to your weight?

The rear shock is utter garbage as you've said, I'm about 120kgs in my bike kit, so it was getting hammered at anything above 50mph on a bumpy road. I was all over the road, it was getting a bit daft to be honest.
As per the description, I've used Bike HPS (Harwood Performance Store - link at the bottom of this reply), as I've used them before and they have always been mega. If you call them to order, they take all your details regarding weight, pillion use, road or track etc. When the shock arrives, it comes with a load of advice on what settings to use, how often to get it serviced etc, Nitron are really good with the details.
I did look an Ohlins unit, but when I've had bikes with Ohlins in the past, they have always been too stiff for the road, they always felt more track focussed. I can understand your reasons for wanting to go full stealth, but personally I'd go with turquoise, make it stand out to those that know 😉😉😎.
I had a bit of bother with the 2021/2022 models not being listed anywhere. So I checked the rear shock part numbers with my local Honda dealer (Newcastle Motorcycles), and they confirmed that apart from the code for the spring colour, the part numbers are identical. I emailed Bike HPS and they were happy to order the shock from Nitron as per the specs for 2018 onwards.
Fitting wise, I was getting quote of anything from £200 upwards, which I though was a bit much for undoing half a dozen bolts and fitting a shock. So I bought the ABBA Superbike stand for £120 and did it myself. The only issue I had, was the shock top bolt was a little tight through the top shock eyelet. My solution was to put the bolt in the freezer for a couple of hours and it went in with a little persuasion.
All in it took about 3 hours to fit, but I was pissing about filming stuff, so you'd be able to do it in 90mins if you just cracked on.
The only thing I would say, is if you have the funds go for the remote preload adjuster on the NTR1, or just go for the NTR2 (it will make it over £700 mind). I went for the NTR1 without the remote adjuster, and I'm probably gonna have to drop the swingarm out the way if I ever needed to adjust the preload. There's not a lot of room where the top of the shock is mounted.
Other that that, the difference is night and day, There was an inch of unused tyre either side on the rear, that I just couldn't use, the shock wouldn't support the bike. Now it's all the way to the edge both sides, and the bike will go as fast as I want without any dramas, no matter how bumpy it gets.

@@MotoMartino79 man, I can't thank you enough for the very helpful and informative response, after reading this I immediately ordered the R2 model, straight from the factory, I ordered the Dark model, which will fit perfectly with the black edition.
I live in the US, so it will take 3-4 weeks to get it.
I'm always excited to work on the bike myself, it helps me to understand my bike better, I got all the needed equipment, but this looks like a 2 man job, and I'm by myself, so a very good mechanic that I know is going to install it for me for $60, which is very responsible for me.
I was thinking of getting the R2 with the remote adjuster, but I'm not carrying any passengers nor carrying side bags, it's just me, so once I tune the suspensions to my weight, I will not need to adjust the suspensions after that.
I'm really looking forward to finally ride the bike with better stability and take the corners with more confidence.

Before you whisk it off to get fitted, get it out of the box and just admire it for a few minutes / hours, they are a thing of absolute beauty.
The R2 will be mega, the R1 is way better than anything I've used before, including the TTX Ohlins stuff.

Thank you very much for the video. I just ordered an R1 and should be arriving about a month and this video will help tremendously . A quick question. When I ordered my shock, they asked for my weight, riding style and etc. Does this mean the shock will arrive preconfigured? Did you have to change anything like preload or other setting? I'm new at this. Thank you!
Hi Hyun. Once the shock arrived and was fitted, the only thing I did was add 2 clicks to the adjuster. I felt the shock was rebounding too quickly, probably because I ordered a fairly high spring rate, so I just needed to slow it down a little.
Other than that, it's been amazing, best modification to the bike by far. 👍👍✌

Hello, are you using the stem mount for the Quadlock? I'm using the handlebar one, but it's off centre which drives me crazy. Cheers.
Hello buddy, I'm using the handlebar mount and I've just lucked in that it's almost central. When I tried it on Mrs Moto's Street Triple it was all over the place, no way she was gonna use it.
Evotech do some really nice mounts that use the handlebar clamps as mounting point. They aren't exactly cheap, but if must be bang in the middle....... 👍👍✌

I have a 22CB1000R as well. However, I have pitbull rear lift. Do you think I can change the shock without using center lift?
I had no clue what a Pitbull rear stand was, so I had to Google it. When you say rear lift, do you mean the one that uses the footrests for support?? If so, you should be good, the foot peg mounting plate is separate to the swingarm.
A normal single sided paddock stand would be a no go, obviously, but I don't see an issue if you have the foot peg mounted stand. None of the bolts were mega tight, but a couple were the ones that had the metal collar in them to stop them loosening. I replaced them with high quality nylock ones, and a good dollop of thread lock. The only other 'issue' I had, was the top shock bolt was a little tight in the top shock eyelet, I had to stick it in the freezer for a while and 'encourage' it to go where I wanted. Couple of thousand miles later and all is still good.
I couldn't tell you the torque settings, but someone else did comment what they were somewhere on here.
Are you looking at a Nitron shock or something else??
Hi Do you happen to remember what torque spec you used for those 2 bottom and top bolts for rear shock?
Hi buddy, after ringing my local Honda dealer as I couldn't find the torque settings anywhere, they advised I tighten until it bottoms out. I wasn't happy with such a vague answer, so I measured the amount of exposed thread on the nut side of the bolt before I removed it.
When I reassembled, I just returned it to that same measurement, which was about 10 degrees before it bottomed out (I had to check to see if the dealer was talking poop). I also replaced with a new locknut and some blue thread lock, just to calm my paranoia about the whole thing coming undone.
1000 miles later and we are still good. 🤣🤣👍👍👍✌
