      QUESTION #1: coincidentally I just bought a 10g flamethrower redbud the same day I watched your video with one in your neighbor’s yard - it is a gorgeous tree but you are right the main trunk has a thinner caliper for the branch/leaf size - how and when would you prune the tree to thicken up the trunk?

    • @urchinsushi2041
      @urchinsushi2041 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      QUESTION #2: yes another redbud question 😂 I also planted a B&B forest pansy redbud in the front yard last week when it was a bit hot and sunny, there was a bit of transplant shock but seems to be settling in, I’ve been watering quite a bit with hose wand, now on drip - I’ve had similar trees look like they weren’t going to make it at first but pulled through - makes me wonder how long does this “transplant shock” last? I feel like a new nervous parent all over again when this happens!

    Thank you Jim. Although I’m not able to come to your open garden I’m glad that your not charging for the event. I watch two other TH-cam channels and they’re having events also, one of them is charging $ 1,000.00 for the opportunity to visit their gardens and another is asking in the hundreds of dollars for the other event. I’m pretty sure more is involved than just walking the gardens a dinner ect.. but come on not everyone can afford shelling out that kind of money. I guess it does sort out just everyday people and maybe some not so nice people but I’m a decent very low income person that happens to love gardening too and would LOVE to see these peoples gardens but there’s no way I could ever spent that kind of money to visit their gardens. So kudos to you and Stephany ! 💐💚🙃

    Learned so much from your videos. Most important thing I finally have gotten through my thick skull is to not "swim upstream" that you mentioned. it's made happier and less stress. If something can't thrive without being babied it needs to go live with someone else. What joy that has brought to me! Great advice!!

    I have learned so much from watching your channel and it has been an inspiration to follow the journey of your new garden over the past few years. I believe many of us can relate to your garden and we become better gardeners through sharing knowledge. Speaking of knowledge, you and Steph are also approachable, down-to-earth teachers. When I revamped my garden three years ago, I had to start at the beginning again. Following your advice, I started with the soil. Last year ( the garden's second year) my garden was plagued by disease and destructive bugs. Very disheartening. I blamed it on the crazy wet, cool then hot spring we had here in coastal Virginia zone 8b. This year, we are experiencing basically the same type of spring but the garden is behaving in a totally different way. More bird activity, practically zero insect pressure, and no disease issues. I am hoping that my garden is reaching its "balance". Compost and feeding the soil has really made a huge difference! Thank you, Jim and Steph for all you do! Your neighbor from Virginia.

    I’m excited about a video featuring professional Japanese maple pruning. That’s something I was searching for several years ago as a brand new gardener. Also, you have created such lovely new views in the garden.

    Thank you for the explanation of white residue in hardwood mulch. The bags of hardwood mulch we purchase are advertised as "virgin hardwood, double-shredded and composted in windrows". Occasionally, we'll encounter a bag that has this white residue in a portion of the bag. This is especially true if the bag sits unopened for a week or two.

    Thanks, Jim. I like how you and Steph have your containers throughout the garden. Do you put the pot directly on the soil/mulch or do you prep the ground before placing it? In the past, I think I've seen Jim dig a small hole and fill with rocks then place the pot on that to ensure the drain holes don't clog but I wasn't sure if that's how you still do it.

    Someone talked about a plant wilting, this season we have had so much shade and rain and new growth that some plants are naturally wilting when a hot sunny day happens and the leaves have not hardened off yet and they aren't used to the sun so there may also be nothing wrong with the plant.

    • @katiekane5247
      @katiekane5247 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Look into "vapor pressure deficit". It's not a case of hardening off. I've seen mature native plants wilting in wet soil.

      Yup, it's natural, to a point! Some plants may need repotted or are really stressed, but things with big leaves will do that, especially if they prefer it a bit cooler. Just a reaction to keep the loss of moisture from the leaf down, for those who don't know. ✌️✌️

    To the person asking about gardenias in NE Alabama have you amended the soil a lot? I grew up down there and we always planted gardenias but my parents didn’t plant them in highly amended soil. The local red soil is very good for them, just acidic enough for them to get iron. I wonder if that has something to do with your yellowing leaves. My mom says if it’s been amended a lot to try coffee grounds twice a year as well as Hollytone is very good for gardenias in Alabama. So sorry you’re going through it. We get calls all the time about gardenias and it’s usually yellowing leaves and almost always an iron issue. Alabama has iron rich soil though so it’s usually a matter of making the iron accessible to the plant.

    Hi, Jim. I’m in Arkansas, zone 7B just recently reclassified to 8A. I live on the west side of a fairly steep, wooded hill so much of my yard gets little morning sun and a lot of afternoon sun. I struggle because everything I plant is curving to the East stretching for the morning sun. But because of the slope, everything gets a lot of hot afternoon sun causing burn issues. I’m not on irrigation so keeping enough water on the steep slope (and clay soil) is difficult. I end up gardening in raised beds mostly. Do you have any suggestions for ornamental plants and shrubs that could handle these conditions?
    BTW I have been following your suggestions on soil Improvement and it is slowly getting better. The problem is that any big storms wash away much of my progress. Enjoy your show, thanks!

    Good point about wood chips having both types of material (green and brown). The exception would be wood chips from a saw mill. Most mills debark their logs first to remove dirt and debris before the log hits the head saw. The chips are made from the de-barked wood (i.e., slabs, edgings, end trimming) scraps are conveyed thru the saw mill to an industrial sized wood chipper. The resulting wood chips are relativelly uniform (depending on whether the chipper uses a shaker table with screen to recirculated larger chips) bits of xylem. Hardwood chips of this type can take a couple of years to begin breaking down.

    Zone 6a here. I planted two columnar apple trees in pots, they are on my deck not that any of that matters my question is they started flowering and leafing out we got a heavy frost and I didn’t cover them 😢 they have of course lost all of their blooms but they have also lost all of the young leaves that were starting to grow are they going to push out new leaves or are they essentially dead trees now ? I was being stupid thinking that it’s okay if they did happen to loses their blossoms they’re young trees planted last spring but I never even gave it a thought about losing their leaves, in your opinion are my trees going to survive? 🤞🏻💐💚🙃

    In my upstate SC 7B/8a yard, I have a Florida Sunshine illicium I planted 2023. It's gonna sleep [sleep creep leap allusion] a little still because it's under a water oak and in its roots. But it's looking peaky: not as perky as last year, some very yellowed and spotty older growth, and not as vertical, with more slight horizontal branching low to the ground. How would you address those 2 things in your illicium?

    Jim, what are you putting between the flagstone to hold them in place? I ask because two years ago we had a flagstone patio put in and the team used Techniseal Proseries NextGel jointing sand. This year, especially, I've noticed the jointing sand is hollowing a bit between the joints (about 1.5 inches between the flagstone), creating slight channels, thus also creating tripping hazards here and there. Any suggestions? I'm in Denver, CO 5b.

    Hi Guys! Your videos gave me the courage to go grass free in my pine tree shaded front yard and instead have a flagstone and brick patio installed. Woohoo! Thank you for that! The crew left me with a layer of the crusher run (mostly the fine stone dust-maybe an inch deep in areas) around the edges. I’ll be wanting to plant there so should I try to remove it all, add some wood chips/mulch and start improving the soil, leave it as is and correct as I plant or none of the above? QUESTION: Regarding Sunshine Ligustrum (SL): Every time I see your SL I love the chartreuse color & know that it would add pop to my gardens. However, when I tried to order it from Southern Living, Home Depot, etc. I found that no one will ship it to TN. When I asked Southern Living why they wouldn’t ship to TN, I was given this explanation, “The state of Tennessee has placed State Agricultural restrictions on shipping this plant to your state. Other than this please contact your state Agricultural Department for explanations.” So, I called TN Ag & their reasoning for the restriction is it has the potential to revert back to being invasive. (Really? Is TN the only state in America that restricts this shrub?) So, what is a gardener to do? Is there a comparable chartreuse shrub I could use in a partial to full sun area? Dirt Question - moved to new home last summer, had 50/50 topsoil/compost mixture brought in to fill old beds. Had a bunch of tree work done and put chips on top of the dirt last fall. Planted bushes last fall which are all doing well. Now putting in annuals/perennials I grew from seed, and they are not doing well. Yellowing, wimpy and just not thriving - I'm wondering if the chips are creating a problem - is there a way to add nitrogen? Should I rake off chips and put in shredded hardwood mulch instead? Really love your channel -

    Hi Jim, you are so helpful. I am a relatively new gardener. I live in the St Louis area zone 6b.I have two Crape Myrtles that are 20+ years old. Each one has 4 main leaders and they are about 4 feet apart. This year all the leaders died on one and the other one lost 2. The problem is I cannot see. Could this be the scale you spoke of. If so, what could I tell someone to look for. Also they both have new growth coming from the stump. Would this happen with scale?
    We have also had a very dry winter and fall.
    Thank you so much.

    Hey Jim. Where can you find those stone columns from the Charlotte garden tour? Looking them up, all anyone has are the stone veneer that wraps around a 4x4 or a plastic pedestal for plants to sit on.

    Someone told me years ago that plants that thrive in Japan also will thrive here. I live in Angier, NC so is it best to choose plants with 'Japanese' is their name because of where I'm located compared to Japan. Something about the same lattitude and longitude?? Do plants that do well in Japan also do much better here?? Is this true Jim?? If not what type of plants should I be looking for?? Thank you!!

    Hello Jim, we had one of the dwarf Forsythia that was all budded up and doing well. We moved it to a new location with the rest of them may be 3-4 ft to left. She did great with flowers and put on a nice show in the new location but died gradually afterwards. It is planted in a slope and we are in GA. I know it was a transplant shock but not sure what happened. How to avoid it next time if we made a mistake. The others are doing great.

    I was given a bunch of Autumn Rouge Azaleas. They bloomed in mid April. I believe they're the reblooming type. I just pruned them on Mother's day weekend. How long will it take for them to rebloom again this summer? I am trying to time the sale of my home. How many weeks after that will they bloom in the Fall? Thanks in advance!

    Donna here, in the last round of bad weather we had, my 2 70 year old oak trees came down that was shading the west facing side of our house. I want to replace them with smaller growing things that will still get tall enough to shade the house, but not damage it if it falls over. I have some pretty tall rose of sharons but they spread so fast. Is there something other than crepe myrtles that can stand the afternoon sun in 8b, Louisiana?

      Jim will likely give a better answer, but you just want to get some decidious trees, and plant them so that their max height is farther than your house, or plan on having trees that can be cut to a certain height. Dwarf fruit trees would be excellent. I have forsythia, lilac, viburnum, aronia, gooseberry and elderberry planted on the west side, but I am in the process of putting up rivercane wind and sun breaks which will help regulate the temperature on that side of the house, because thats where all thw bedrooms are located and it is dreadfully heat radiated in the late summer.

    My Viburnum opulus roseum did not bloom this spring. It bloomed in April 2023 and then set berries. It was planted summer 2022. Its gets about 3 hours of direct sun in the afternoon and bright shade the rest of the day. The same area is enough sun for panicle hydrangeas to bloom. It did not get pruned. I am in the new 8a in Greensboro NC. Please let me know if you know why I didn't get blooms. Thank you

    I have two containers by my front door that get some morning sun. I planted them with holly fern, wire vine and variegated ivy last year. The holly fern has slowly started to get this weird yellowing this spring. I can’t figure out what’s going on. I did add some iron tone to see if that would help but I wasn’t sure on the amount since they’re in pots. It’s sort of a splotching. Everything else seems fine. Any ideas?

    Hi Jim! I live in zone 7b/8a, clay soil and am having trouble with my Globemaster alliums. The first year, they were decent in size and performance. Subsequent years I can’t get them to produce. I’ve added more in sunnier locations and some leaves came up this year with 3in stems with flower heads not opening. What gives? I heard on another channel they need gravel in their holes for drainage. How do you plant yours? They are beautiful in your landscape. Thanks so much!

    Hey Jim, I’m in zone 6B/7A. I have a question about daylilies. Two years ago I had someone gift me daylilies from their garden. The first year they didn’t bloom - I thought maybe because I had them in a part shade location. So I transplanted them last year to a full sun location. As of right now, there is still no evidence they are going to have any flowers. All my other daylilies are either blooming or full of buds (I even have multiple varieties and they have always done incredible anywhere I have them in the garden).
    So my question(s): what could be some other reasons these daylilies aren’t blooming? And how long should I give them before I just get rid of them? Thanks!

    When putting out garden fertilizers I always try and time it to coincide with imminent rain. However when you’re putting it on a lawn is there a danger that if its a heavy rainstorm it would be so much rain that it could somehow dilute it the point of negating its benefits?

    All of my creeping phlox is suddenly turning yellow and dying after flowering. Any thoughts on why? The plants are 2-3 years old, put in full sun southern exposure. They were doing so well and just died all of sudden. No signs I can see of a fungal disease or anything. I’m in Seattle zone 9a and it’s been a little warmer and drier and sunnier than normal for this time of year but these plants survived our hot dry summers so I’m completely confused. Should I just give up on them? Should I prune them and see if they send up healthy growth? Or should I just put in a different plant? Help 🙏

    Just heard about Asian Jumping Worms. The worms were mentioned on a garden channel in California and Linda Vater appeared to have dug one up on her "clay" soil video from yesterday. From what I have read they are in North Carolina and can ruin your garden. Also read that all plants that are brought in should be inspected and not to bring in outside compost because it can be infested. Yikes. Tell me it isn't so, Jim!
