- Hello everyone,
Today we take a look at the Whitwell and Reepham Railway's Diesel Gala - of which Lawrie's Ruston 48, Sir William McAlpine was one of the visitors for.
But in true LMM fashion, everything didn't run smoothly....
A massive thank you to the Whitwell and Reepham Railway for inviting us and Sir William to take part in the gala.
If you want more information on the Whitwell and Reepham Railway, check out their website here: whitwellstation.com/
A massive thank you to Rob, Nick Dan, and the others who went above and beyound working on the 48.
A video featuring:
Lawrie - Presenter & Loco Owner, very proud to have the 48 out and about
Nick - Cameraman, excited to see the 48 out.
Additional footage from Rob, John, and Matt.

Great video, Lawrie. I was so honoured to be allowed to drive your Ruston 48 so much and get the opportunity to help you out. Cheers, mate! 👏👏👏 Here’s to the next time…
It's a lovely little thing!
@@lmm when it works you mean.. but seriously those rustons are indeed wonderful little things. Also any plans to fit sir william and the other two with MU gear so you can operate all 3 at once from a single loco?
@@evafan002 No, well just shout to the other driver 😂
@@lmm i was just talking with a friend about this and we reckon that if you put the 48s cab to cab it would not be too difficult to run a mechanical linkage between the controls in order to duplicate the control inputs.. just sayin lol
The old adage “the trains will run unless I have guests” apparbetly applies to 1:1 scale and not just models 😅
Great recovery by all involved. I love how the railway just rolled with it and made No. 3 a diesel for the day.
Very impressed with how the railway dealt with it all
I like the 12" to the foot Airfix tank wagon!
Genius branding of the steam loco!
It was a super idea. Very amused
The curse has returned in spectacular style. Instead of one locomotive the Lawrie LMM curse has broke two of them
I didn't even touch the North British!
@@lmm Turns out you didn't have to😂
@@schwarzermoritz it must now spread via Lawries aura.
@@lmm it's telepathically spreading to different machines.
@@lmmAh North British. The poor company never did make a successful transition from steam to diesel, which led to their demise. Not fair to blame the loco problems on them (their shunters were fine), but every time I hear North British and diesel together I feel a touch of sadness.
Ah, a new episode of What's Broken Now. He's obviously been learning from Jupiter that it's a sure way to get attention 😂
Hahahah. Poxy thing
What have you broken this time?😂😂
I touched nothing!
@@lmm just some stagefright
Brilliant video Lawrie, Talk about engineering Karma! The radiator from 303, which you saved from the scrap heap to restore and which sat for over 30 years comes to the rescue of the 48 without a single leak. Bookies wouldn't give you odds on that. Hope you manage to sort out the water pump when you get the 48 back home. 👍.
It'll get sorted at Reepham - should be sorted this weekend
"Honk Honk I am a diesel" lmao!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Something poetic about the steamer saving the time table.
Glad you were able to get the Ruston running again for the remainder of the gala. Same thing happens when I try to go to car shows, been daily driving something for weeks, go to get ready and now theres an issue. Never fails.
Yeah, I know that feeling!
Great to see the Ruston out working (we won’t mention the leakages😬)
I also got a little excited seeing the unimog 416 u900 parked up with the road rail gear and massive hiab! She’s a rare old beast with that set up😁👌
That's a good old machine!
@@lmm yeah I used to have 2😁 tempted to buy another one!🫣
you could say it's... uni-mogged?
Imposter Steam Engine! Very funny!
sometimes you just got to be a spy! have to make sure the enemy isnt saying bad things about you
The more I looked at it the more I exploded with laughter
Makes a change from diesel/ petrol "land-trains" disguised as steam locos.
The Severn Valley Railway had imposter 57xx of the on one of the recent diesel gala's. However it was only their to sit on the train to provide steam heat as diesel it was paired up with didn't have steam heating
Glad you enjoyed it
It was a great event! Shame about the north British as that was the main attraction for me as well as your Ruston. Glad you managed to get it running again for the Sunday!
Really felt for the guys with the North British. They've been working so hard to get it ready!
I like how you guys improvised and got all wheels rolling at the end. Disaster avoided!!!
That second Ruston is proving itself useful even if it is as spare parts for Sir William. I wonder can the radiator be rebuild or will a replacement have to be made?
It's just the header tank, so we'll manufactor a new one.
Trading parts with the little Ruston's is beginning to remind me of kitbashing models.
Having spares is so useful!
Fortunate to have a spare radiator on hand, I'm guessing there's not that many around and difficult to get refurbished
Glad it all went well in the end and a good weekend was had by all
It's just the header tank that's failed.
So we'll get it rebuilt
Always enjoy your wonderfully edited and beautifully filmed (from so many different angles) uploads Lawrie.
I filmed next to none of this was!
that is what makes life interesting ! imagine trying to fix a battery operated loco instead of a radiator on a diesel ;) well done and keep it up
Swapping the batteries on something like the ones I drive at Amerton recently were designed to be done at the end of a shift!
I remember a grand Winter 'Steam' Gala at the North Norfolk, January 2006 (?), somehow consisted on-the-day purely of N7/4 69621, and the Class 31 dragging J15 65462 around in light-steam, as 65462's rear tube-plate was leaking "like a waterfall" and so frankly ought have been outright condemned!😬 Sooo, on the bright side, Lawrie: 2.5 diesels and a steam loco' at a Diesel Gala is a better showing for the W&RRly team than that 2006 NNRly event sadly was.😅 Good work keeping the show on the road.👍😊
Oh it's certainly not the worst ever! The Sunday was fine
Well Done Sir :)
It was great to meet you on the Saturday.
Just a shame that I live too far away to get involved :(
It was lovely to ride behind your Rustons first ever passenger service at another railway Lawrie!
Thanks for coming along and supporting the event!
Proper professioanl standard filming and audio. Thanks, all.
The Fowler is quite adorable with that front deck. Love tiny British shunters. So different from the tiny American switchers I’m used to.
Oh certainly - and much lighter I'd guess too! The Fowler is 10 tonnes, the 48 is 7.5
This railway looks like a great prototype for a compact model railway layout (gears start turning in my head).
Yeah, it's a great concept
I must say that shunter looks quite good, great video as always however the north britishes number is d2700 and agecroft was wearing the number D7681, 7681 is her works number with D slapped on the front because it’s definitely a diesel.
Exactly, mate! 👍
Yes that was it.
I must admit, I really do like your black/blue ''diesel'' puffing away in the background. It somehow looks like a proper engine, chimney stack and all.
Great video as always, must see if there are any steam locomotives tootling around the Co Kildare/Co Laois area.
So happy you got it mended. I had a nasty feeling I was on it's last trip of the weekend. Well done 🙂
We wouldn't have let that happen!t Thanks for coming!
A thoroughly enjoyable outing. Thanks for doing what you do Lawrie and Co!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love that headboard 😂
Was a great idea
17:43 the manic (triumphant) laughter from Lawrie lol
I was pleased!
You look very proud driving that goods train 😅❤
Hello Lawrie it was a great Gala it was amazing to see the Ruston!
It was really good!
Looks like what Blodge refer to as 'Jolly Good Fun' .... all round! Was that 'spare' radiator from the machine you recently dug out of a scrapyard?
As only the 4th blue 'honorary diesel' I'm aware of which has been dipped in woad AND been given the double arrow treatment, I just HAD to check on Agecroft No.3's pedigree ... and was delighted to find siblings Agecroft Nos.1 and 2 are also still with us. No.1(in a charming green livery) apparently lives at MOSI, but has been seen at the NRM - in steam - and No.2 at the Ribble Steam Railway (seems to be out of ticket at present, but has run in preservation ... doing stints as "Percy").
It was great fun!
Yes, the radiator was borrowed from 393303.
All three of the Agecroft engines survived into preservation!
Loed this. Reminds me of the museum line which I drive trains on in New Zealand. We run push and pull trains in Whangarei at Kiwi North.
Stop, Look, Listen? Can't help but listen with that screeching noise 🤣
28:30 whats that noise? Has it got an adorable horn :D
I think it was just a bit of track squeaking
*_"Because yesterday, well, everything went wrong."_*
Welcome to the 2020s.
Man, some engines really do have stage fight. Yes, stage fight, as in once they're on the stage they will fight with you. Also I got some inspiration so I wrote this little poem:
Gasoline will talk to you, if you learn its language
Steam will sing a song, but you have to know the chorus
Electric makes a tidy list and tells you all that’s wrong
But Diesel’s apathetic, and likes to hear you curse
Diesel’s not like other girls, she’s ugly and she’s mean
She’ll gas the whole darn place, and make sure nothing’s ever clean
She’ll bump you and she’ll tease you, but when all is said and done
There’s still some silver linings to these angry old machines
Gasoline will break and will throw a fit and moan
Steam can blow up in your face and often makes you groan
Electric likes to brush the issues deep beneath the rug
But Diesel will keep going ‘til it rattles off its lugs
Gas is needy and won’t start unless everything’s all right
Steam will get dirt everywhere and needs attention all the time
Electric can short and blow a fuse and leave you without light
But Diesel won’t give up unless you do and will long keep up the fight
So next time your diesel just won’t start or move an inch
Remember this advice, ‘cause it will save you in a pinch
Diesels will talk back to you, and they’ll find the lines to cross
Instead take charge, she’ll start right up, if you show her who’s the boss.
I got some inspiration from a clip from the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, but the idea came from this video here. Hope y'all enjoy!
You can’t have a gala without a bit of drama
Apparently so!
I see you put a new horn on the Ruston!
The old one had entirely given up
that is a cool looking guard van! shame aabout the ruston breaking down hope it got fixed.
It was sorted by the second day of the gala
An excellent video with a most enjoyable narration.
Pleased to hear you enjoyed it!
The Mid-Hants Railway had a North British shunter, but, because the Mirrlees engine had a cracked cylinder head, they scrapped it.
That's a shame
It's lucky you bought an extra Ruston 48. and hey you did what you originally wanted to do and Nick some parts of it to fix your operational one. so in a way you Got a donor engine. at least until you get the second engine fully restored
It's just borrowing some bits for now
@@lmm Still it is lucky you had another one lying around. but I can't wait to see both of your Rusten 48 in action! and not have one of them act as a source of spare parts. at least you can return it when you're done.
@@lmmCouple both together with MU cable and call it a 96!
well done again Lawrie. Caroline
Thank you!
'The day... everything went wrong'.
Some days are like that in railroading Lawrie; I had one day where I ended up with 4 defective vehicles, not least of which was a shorted motor! O_O (yay electric traction)
Thankyou for sharing this with us Lawrie, the ups and the downs
You're welcome.
You definitely had a worse day 😂
I think I spotted myself in there a few times, thanks for having a chat and sharing another video.
You're most welcome, thanks for coming along!
Is the Ransomes of the shunter diesel, the same Ransomes, Simms and Jeffries, who made lawn mowers. In the mid 1950's, my parents had a Ransomes two stroke lawn mower. Our very elderly and not very fit gardener was an ex western front railwayman of WW1 who had been invalided out after his second gassing. He used occasionally to take me down to Keith Junction goods yard, where he had been a driver, until health retirement and blag me totally illegal footplate rides around the yard aged around 10. The Ransomes mower did not like slow running and poor old Euan the gardener could not walk behind it fast enough to stop the plug oiling up. I talked to my father and he agreed to replace the two stroke Ransomes with a four stroke Atco, that Euan could manage.
Yes, that Ransomes of Ipswich. Oh what a lovely story
a classic example of Gunderson's corollary to murphy's law: if anything will go wrong, it will always do so at the worst possible moment!
It could have been worse though
Does this count as an episode of whats broken now?
If I'd had time to film it properly it could have been
Good luck with your next Rusting Gala. Remember to oil it next year...
it just shows that you need 2 shredded wheat in the morning to make a time table.
😂 😂
You managed to get some of the rust bucket loco back in service already.
It did amazingly
Those are some angry wagons😂 4:00
17:42 reconize that delightful winging sound of a ruston plenty or so live on derwent valley lightrailway minus lawrie's brutal laugh
They've got a good collection there!
A saw you come into the carpark at some speed and though wonder where you have been in the middle of the day, did not know what an eventful day you had on Saturday.
I was returning with parts!
looks like it was a great little event, despite the problems that had arisen. Hats off to you and all those that made it possible.
Also at 11:30 in the video, I spot a Mighty Car Mods " Chopped" jacket>?
It was a really good weekend
Sure looks like fun!!
It was super... Once it was fixed
Hey Lawrie, have you talked with Hyce about going over and visiting them at the Colorado State Railroad Museum in the US? They work with several narrow gauge steam locomotives and have mentioned in their own content that they would love to have you come out to try your hand at working with their locos. I know it's a hell of a long trip, but I'd love to see that collaboration. Maybe you could also join them visiting the Durango & Silverton Railroad or the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. His channel is literally just called "Hyce" and the profile pic is a blue bird with a small hat.
I like trains. Steam engines are so nice and have a somewhat magical charm and personality to them.
So do old diesels!
Came expecting "chasing dinosaurs" instead got "what's broken now"
It's a good mix 😂
The Luck of the Lawrie persists, think you could make a T-shirt with that on :p
😂 😂 The luck of Lawrie
Awsome loco the diesel steamy
Agecroft is great
@@lmm he is awsome
I have to wonder if the freight cars might've had something to do with something. I don't know much about railway gear, but I don't think that rolling stock is supposed to sound like a burlap sack of cats! (Also, if Lawrie wasn't _personally_ responsible for the "Toot Toot I'm A Diesel" headboard, I will be quite disappointed.)
No, I can't take credit for that.
The stock is fine, the railway is just a little tight for some of the longer wheelbase stock.
Hello @@lmm
You know... If you had just tossed a diesel-soaked rag or chunk of wood in the firebox every now and then, you could technically call the steamer partially diesel-powered.
27:49 Does the Fowler really... quack? Like a duck?😂
It's a great klaxon isn't it
Excellent to see a steam loco replace a failed Diesel. Sorry it was yours though 😢
Love your little 48 ❤
What did you use to fix the rad?
I used Alumaseal on the Saab when I started losing coolant 2 years ago. I’ve never had a problem with Sovvagn since. I was getting through a litre every 100km!
You should post a link to the Jayemm on cars video when you went to buy it for more recent subscribers. JM’s face when he saw what you’d bought was just classic TH-cam 😂😂.
Good on you Lawrie, love what you do mate.
Might be able to see you in the UK this summer…
PS That Esso tank wagon 3929 is just gorgeous.❤. 1:1 scale Airfix kit?😂
We used the spare radiator from the other 48.
With some 'emergency radiator seal'
agecroft..fighting motive power discrimination one gala at a time XD
We're very progressive at Whitwell
6th
I love the Ruston 48
Me too!
As much as I like little industrial diesels, it was nice to see in your video a familiar friend from days gone by (Agecroft Number 3) pretending to be "a dirty diesel", lol
Your aRushton sou ds much different with a load on, and did you also rob a metrolink tram street running horn for it?
It does have quite the transmission whine - the new horn was an Amazon special!
excellent video! what is lptb? it's on the side of the ballast hopper.
London Passenger Transport Board, I'm guessing
London Passenger Transport Board?
ah ok i see so it was ex london underground wagon then i presume cbeers
Worlds first diesel outline steam locomotive
I think the Leader beat it to it - as did Sentinel
When are we getting an update on Ruston 165? you must have shifted it by now? 🙂
Soon!
Once you get your coolant system fixed you should get all the water out of the system and go back with Evans antifreeze so your system has no pressurization. It will help your old parts last a lot longer.
It's an open system anyway, so it doesn't pressurise
I wonder if you’d be able to find anyone near by who could repair and restore your old radiator so you could have a good spare to use in the future.
There's a local company who it's going to go to.
It needs to go back into the 48!
22:40 looks like a scene in Train Sim World 4!
I was really pleased to be able to fly the drone like that
@@lmm Smooth as butter!
The steam train identifies as diesel
Yes it does
Haha I was going to say the same thing 😂
Yup knew the last video went too well, and I just HAD to say something too.
Yep. Had to happen
least lawrie got to find out that 303s radiator worked and held water so when 303s eventually done it can thank its cheeky sibling if it was mine id probably have told it off and told it to behave maybe lawries working ruston got so excited to haul a people train it couldnt hold it in and peed its self (pun kind of intended with the peed its self bit ) maybe cos lawries ruston decided it wouldnt behave the north british decided it would follow suit and play up like how lawrie says ''locomotive ownership is wonderful'' with a not so impressed streight face almost as if he wanted to curse at his ruston for being a naughty loco hopefully when 303s restored it wont get influenced by lawries working ruston to be naughty maybe it was jupiter who influenced the ruston to be cheeky or maybe lawries presense caused it to break
I hope that you managed to get the Ruston fixed.
Don't worry he did.
Was sorted for the second day
Whats the limit of the 48 (pulling weight)
It'll do 100 tonnes on the level
Isnt the Blue Sadle tank actually a Transengine, which Identifys as a diesel.
Anyone else having the Mexican Super Mario Cat meme play in their head when the see the logo on the Tanker Car?
I don't even know what that is
Why is it that some older diesel engines have the bars linking the wheels ? is it just left over from the steam era or was there a practical reason ?
The bars (known as "rods" usually) are the power transmission from one axle to the other, just as they are on steam locomotives. If you look at the "Shredded Wheat" Fowler in particular, you can see that it has two rods on each side. One rod goes between the two axles, and the other goes forward to a crank arm that's on the electric motor, and that's how the power is transmitted from the electric motor to the drive axles.
The Ruston 48 instead has chain drives to the axles, which you can see quite well in the "camera between the tracks" shot. However, it's a quite lightweight locomotive, and I think it's near the limit of the amount of power a chain drive can easily transmit. Also, it's a lot more convenient to oil and maintain rods rather than chains because you don't have to crawl under the locomotive to get to them.
Some early locomotives also would have had a chain drive or gear drive from the motor to one axle, and then use drive rods to power the other axle (or, in the case of three-axle locomotives, both other axles).
The reason most modern diesels don't have linking bars like this is that these days the usual arrangement is a separate motor for each drive axle, connected to the axle with a gear drive.
It's not just older locos.
Chain drive was fine, the 88 is the same, but rods were used to transfer power from one place - gearbox, hydraulic motor or traction motor to the wheels.
Modern mainline stuff has motors on more wheels.
I'm wondering how the Ruston 48 got all those holes in the radiator. Was it a puncture from outside or internal corrosion/damage.debris? Will we ever know?
I think corrosion.
The header tank is steel, so it appears that it's just life expired
How did Tippocherty get its name?
I think it's what it was called at Ransomes
@@lmm Could be from the very old film "The secret life of Walter Mitty" I believe his fighter airplane made a similar noise...
I'm surprised this was the first public passenger train Sir Willima has pulled!
Was the brown diesel at 18:06 not in operating condition at the time?
Georgie is currently awaiting repairs, so it wasn't in use
You could always throw a little deisil oil in the firebox
Ah should have done!
And another thing...! The NBL D2700 - is that a works number or a BR number?
It is its BR number.
👍
👍
I spy a mighty car mods chopped logo :)
I didn't spot it 😂
@@lmm It's great to see one favorite channel logo on another of my favorite channels :D
Two thoughts occur to me: one, is it possible to retro-fit the lights on the 48DS with red/white LED assemblies? You may not want to do this of course because of originality reasons, but I think it was done to the Swedish railcar on the Nene Valley Railway - and two, can your original radiator be repaired? Of all things, I remember the proper steel/copper radiator on my late father's Ford Zodiac being repaired, pressure tested and painted by a company in the mid-1980s.
Yes, I'd just need to install a switch to run it when one is lit the other is red.
The radiator shouldn't be a huge issue to repair.
@@lmm Simple centre-off double-pole changeover should do the trick then.
Id be interested to know what the SMS says for allowing passenger trains to run unfitted. I didn't realise it was permitted. Not trolling, just wondering how the authorities have been satisfied to allow it to happen
You're allowed to run with a brakevan.

Good show!
