The term "Upanayan" is derived from the Sanskrit words "upa" (near) and "nayan" (leading or bringing). Thus, Upanayan means "bringing near" or "leading towards." Symbolically, it represents leading the student closer to their spiritual teacher and the initiation into a life of learning and spiritual discipline. It marks the boy's entry into the Brahmacharya (student) stage of life, where he dedicates himself to education and spiritual growth.
