Is everyone forgetting that kaido had been fighting other strong opponents the whole time and also holding up his floating sky island with thousands of his men above the cloud. That must have taken a toll on his stamina. Dude is a beast for real
Not discrediting Kaido at all, but to be honest only luffy and zoro had dealt any real damage to kaido throughout his entire fight, and although luffy grew throughout the fight to the point he can call himself emperor class fighter, he was only doing tick damage until the later stages. If post wano luffy and kaido were to fight it out again while both being fresh and starting at 100%, there's an not so insignificant chance luffy might not need gear 5.
I think that most people forget that rage and anger aren’t the only way to achieve extremely high levels of power. This is why Gear 5 here is so great. I believe Luffy Gear 5 represents freedom, as you can see how unrestrained his movement is. He’s absolutely enjoying himself. Luffy is filled with so much positivity and that is what supplies his strength for Gear 5.

Exactly! From the beginning Luffy was goofy like this, so i never understood the reason why some people are hating on Gear5 when the story is so goofy from the beginning. Like just go back to the beginning of the story and you will see that luffy was always like this but in a way he was held by his imagination and now he is awakened he can go as far as he wants. This power is just perfect for thus story and luffy's character.

It just gave him the freedom to be who he is with no limits, from the beginning of the story he was always like this “in term of personality” The awakening was only a push for luffy to show his true and full power and gives him the freedom to do whatever he wants. if the fruit gave him this personality then it’s fine, but I don’t get why it became a problem NOW, when he had this fruit and this personality since he was young. The awakening just pushed the goofiness of his character but it didn’t change him completely. It’s not like he has an alter ego inside of him like let’s say Naruto/Kurama. Luffy is still luffy.

@@hiccup2379 the colors are just visual effects for audience, which includes the black armament haki. The only effect that actually matters is the black lightning, which Oda uses to mean a conflict of two CoC haki users.
What I love about Gear 5 is that Luffy’s rubber ability came as a result of Oda wanting to make the goofiest power he could think of. So he made it rubber because just like with cartoons, rubber tends to squash and stretch. So it makes sense that his awakened ability isn’t his ability to turn anything around him into rubber, it’s the ability to squash and stretch everything around him (including himself) just like in a cartoon. This is perfectly in line with Oda’s vision for Luffy.

It's also effecting people in a vicinity of him like kaido something most zoans or paramecias don't do. Probably due to his mythical zoan power as they seem to have the power of a mythical creature and a added power like a paramecias like how the budda zoan turned u into a big golden one but let you throw shock waves.
The music over the past 2 episodes is easily the best music of the series… the drums of liberation and this remix are literally perfect, I love it when the voice comes in at the end, it makes Luffy feel like this unstoppable force of ridiculous power
I love Gear 5 because of how refreshing of a power up it is. Majority of transformations have required rage and anger to tap into, and while yes Luffy DID die to get this form, he didn’t come out angry. He came out smiling.
Luffy has become my favorite character of all time these past few years, and seeing him have fun, break-dancing, laughing, smiling, all while he beats Kaido to a pulp solidifies why. I love him so much.
I was actually expecting them to show that the giant katana next to onigashina was tilting (or even moving a little bit) due to Luffy's haki, but that's also good anyway
Luffy’s confusion, his excitement, the drumbeat, the slight changes in the music, the sound effects, and then the animation, it’s a masterpiece and I loved every second of it 🥹

The producers actually considered to reduce luffy's iconic gear 5 laughs in the anime, because they were afraid that it would be to hard for the voice actress to laugh like crazy all the time. But Mayumi Tanaka nailed it so perfectly, she blew all their doubts away. What an amazing actress. 👏🏻
Can we all just appreciate the joy and love that went into this animation? You can TELL the animators had FUN with this one! I also can't help but laugh at Kaido's expressions as he slowly realizes he's now in a full blown smash and stretch cartoon. The old timey sound effects are just the icing on the cake.
honestly I cant see it the same way you do, at least to me, the shots have really weird decisions, like, luffy's eye, then kaito moving so fast while the camera moves round him so we cant see anything, then luffy's mouth, then luffy's foot, Its like, you dont have enough general shots with solid drawings. kinda messy

I love the fact that part of JoyBoy’s whole thing is that he naturally makes people smile and that’s what the sound effects do for the viewer. You can’t help but have a smile on your face listening to these goofy ahh noises 😂

The sound effects and antics are almost Hanna Barbera level and for some reason I love it! Kaido has been played up as this ultimate enemy and here Luffy is, awakened to his full potential after multiple defests and playing with Kaido like a bleeping ragdoll!

My grandfather passed away about four hours before the episode dropped. Joy Boy's return actually brought a smile to my face while I was watching with friends who were comforting me. That entire minute after Luffy grabs Kaido and brings him back to the roof had to be some of the most fun I had watching a show! They weren’t lying when they said Joyboy brings joy to all people because I had the biggest smile while watching this sequence!
And thats what ruined it. Kaido is the strongest dude in the verse but g5 doesn't take things serious anymore. If someone's fighting alongside g5, g5 will be too careless and ruin things for his allies too

After this, we just have Blackbeard, Shanks, Mihawk, Dragon, and the government whose powers are greater than Kadio/Big Mom but will feel less undefeatable(except Imu ig). Also, if you don't think this is a great counter to Kadio you just might not understand his character that well, what counters a depressed beast a happy/loving god.

As a guy who has never even gotten past the first 3 episodes of one piece, this is just phenomenal! It’s like a strange mixture between 1930s, modern western, and Japanese style animation. It has the cartoony bounce of the 30s, the fluidity of modern western animation, and yet is still so distinctly anime in its execution. I understand how people might not like it (some of the sfx are a bit iffy and it’s a little hard to follow at parts), but to me I think it’s awesome
I think the intended "liberation" is not only external, ie for people around luffy, but for luffy himself. That laughing is like becoming free after years of sorrow or the prison of the self. He indeed said "now I can do whatever I wanted to"
Exactly and it's funny cause it goes deeper, oda has been wanting to draw cartoony like this since the beginning. He planned this all, so now not only does luffy free others and he's freed himself but now Oda is free to draw everything he's always wanted, and succeeded in putting a smile on all faces even ours.
Luffys Haki got an insane boost when he reached Gear 5. His Haki in that form is so strong that it can split the sky without him clashing with anyone. His strikes are much more powerful in Gear 5
yeah... if oda applied real life physics that feat makes no sense. He would actually take more damage at higher altitudes because you actually slow down the further you reach the earth's surface (as the air gets denser).
Bringing joy and laugh is really good examples of a god, while enel was bringing opposite (maybe he feared skypieans so they bow to him as he is god, and got defeated for acting as bad god lol)

Oda, the voice actors, the animators and anybody else that helped create this masterpiece of a show deserve so much more than applause and screams of joy man. they did a outstanding job.

This power up is so genius, one of the core themes of Luffy's character and One Piece in general is freedom, and what better ultimate form than one that grants unlimited freedom from the shackles of reality? I'm a casual One Piece fan at best, but I think Oda struck gold with this particular development, and I'm very happy with how it turned out in the anime as well.

The way Luffy says, "Muscle, Muscle... Muscle!" and it kinda sounding like Monkey had me cracking up! That voice actor man, she sold this whole performance SO well and I'm so hyped to see if every time we see gear five it's in this absurd style!
The best Thing about that Moment that had me absolutely dying (a one piece diehard fan from germany) is that the german word for muscle is Muskel.... But even tho the german word is Muskel everybody just says "Mucki" or "Muckis" in german..... It's Sort of a slang thing.... But it was so random to then see Luffy inflating himself, becoming a tank from one second to the next while saying "Mucki Mucki, MUUUUUCKIIIIII!!!" was so funny 😂😂😂😂
As a fan of the old cartoons (AKA Golden Era/Rubber Hose), it brought me so much joy. Its like Kaido just entered into Toon World during that part of the fight. Its worth the wait.
One of my favorite details is that they actually used Hanna Barbera sound effects which adds even more charm to the transformation, I'm seriously so happy they did it 💖
Can I just say that I LOVE that they overlaid the “Drums of Liberation” leitmotif over the usual “going into battle Luffy’s gon’ win!” Drum beat leitmotif that we have heard so often in the series? It really feels like the usual leitmotif has been the drums of liberation all along and only now are we finally seeing the full picture, hearing all the drums at last ❤
Seeing Luffy grab Kaido and swing him around like it’s nothing is so hilarious. Also showcases how strong Luffy has really became when activating Gear 5 via the Drums of Liberation.
@@blackscientist Prior to this moment the fight between the two and many others were absolutely grueling and extensive. Luffy had to get KO’ed 3 times before he could finally reach this form. Gear 5 is just a completely true and perfect personification of luffys personality and creativity that he’s always shown with his fruit. In order for him to get stronger throughout the story he’s had to be very creative with his powers, altering the shape, size, and entire structure of his body based on his pure imagination and what he thought would be strong. Gear 5 is basically this but with his brain juiced out to the max. His only limit is his imagination, and the ridiculousness of his powers are no longer held back by what he think can work for him and his friends, but rather what he wants to do when he wants it.
It’s actually not in character with Luffy. It’s in character with Joyboy. Luffy as a character has been essentially ruined with the revelation of the fruit he ate.
Everything is amazing down to the way he laughs and grins plus all the impact frames as well with JoyBoy's eyes being Red. Top tier animation right here. Thanks ODA.

I love Gear 5 because of how refreshing of a power up it is. Majority of transformations have required rage and anger to tap into, and while yes Luffy DID die to get this form, he didn’t come out angry. He came out smiling.
Even as a non watcher, this felt so refreshing for a Shonen fight. Luffy turned into a Cuphead boss, props to the animators!

The producers actually considered to reduce luffy's iconic gear 5 laughs in the anime, because they were afraid that it would be to hard for the voice actress to laugh like crazy all the time. But Mayumi Tanaka nailed it so perfectly, she blew all their doubts away. What an amazing actress. 👏🏻

That entire minute after Luffy grabs Kaido and brings him back to the roof had to be some of the most fun I had watching a show! They weren’t lying when they said Joyboy brings joy to all people because I had the biggest smile while watching this sequence!

As a guy who has never even gotten past the first 3 episodes of one piece, this is just phenomenal! It’s like a strange mixture between 1930s, modern western, and Japanese style animation. It has the cartoony bounce of the 30s, the fluidity of modern western animation, and yet is still so distinctly anime in its execution. I understand how people might not like it (some of the sfx are a bit iffy and it’s a little hard to follow at parts), but to me I think it’s awesome

Luffys Haki got an insane boost when he reached Gear 5. His Haki in that form is so strong that it can split the sky without him clashing with anyone. His strikes are much more powerful in Gear 5
yeah... if oda applied real life physics that feat makes no sense. He would actually take more damage at higher altitudes because you actually slow down the further you reach the earth's surface (as the air gets denser).

This power up is so genius, one of the core themes of Luffy's character and One Piece in general is freedom, and what better ultimate form than one that grants unlimited freedom from the shackles of reality? I'm a casual One Piece fan at best, but I think Oda struck gold with this particular development, and I'm very happy with how it turned out in the anime as well.

@@blackscientist Prior to this moment the fight between the two and many others were absolutely grueling and extensive. Luffy had to get KO’ed 3 times before he could finally reach this form. Gear 5 is just a completely true and perfect personification of luffys personality and creativity that he’s always shown with his fruit. In order for him to get stronger throughout the story he’s had to be very creative with his powers, altering the shape, size, and entire structure of his body based on his pure imagination and what he thought would be strong. Gear 5 is basically this but with his brain juiced out to the max. His only limit is his imagination, and the ridiculousness of his powers are no longer held back by what he think can work for him and his friends, but rather what he wants to do when he wants it.
This is such a genius power up that Oda created. It’s so in character with Luffy, that in any other show it would look absurd.
He straight copied MUI Goku and also luffy is 100% inspired from Goku anyways. Even his goofyness
