Awesome effort at a fair review. Both are great pieces of gear and I think you’ve demonstrated that nicely. Your point should be well taken, the Color Box V2 is a fantastic value and engineering marvel at its regular price. For anyone who takes the time to understand how versatile it is it’s just a no-brainer as you say. Getting it for $330 is the kind of deal you can feel good about forever. I realize for many that’s more than they can afford, so it doesn’t matter how good the value is and that’s a bummer. But for those who can and who enjoy tinkering and experimenting with knobs, tones, and textures, it’s a gift. It takes a lot of work to do a video like this, thanks again.
Thank you so much for this video, this was a great comparison between these units. The aml does sound less gritty, and more airy and open, but they do sound pretty close otherwise.
In general, the big difference in noise floor and tone(through the addition of harmonics) likely comes down to rail voltage. If the JHS is operating at 9 volts, that is a lot less headroom than the 500 series power supply at +/- 16 volts. Also, you are running the JHS preamp in HIGH mode which decreases the amount of clean headroom available. "The Colour Box V2 has a new Hi / Lo switch to control the amount of clean headroom you have available. In the Lo mode, you will easily be able to get ultra clean sounds without breakup. Lo Mode is excellent for tone shaping when distortion is not needed. In the Hi mode, the Colour Box V2 will distort much more readily, giving you a broad spectrum of overdrive, distortion, and fuzz sounds."
