The charm of this garden is that it doesn't try to be too perfect and trimmed but is allowed to be a little overgrown and is therefore given a more natural look.Saw a Monty Don program about this garden a few years ago and he showed how in certain parts even weeds were allowed to grow to obtain that natural look.The idea to establish a garden among real ruins was a great idea as many estates,especially in England,have artificial ruins to get that romantic appearance.
This tour was just wonderful for me !!! I didn¨t even heard it existed !! I am a landscaper so it was very educative too .... thank you very much for sharing. I hope I have a next trip to Rome to visit such a beautiful place.

What an unexpected treat! Why only today I had the privilege of spending a few hours clearing a steep bank here in Hong Kong to extend an existing church garden. This was inspirational.
This was so restful and beautiful. I had a problem reading the subtitles as they appeared to be greyed out. I do like your style, appreciate the pace and the fact that when you focus on something you rest there for a moment. Many times I wonder what is to the right or the left and then you turn to rest there for a moment. Wonderful! And I like hearing the soft sounds of your footfall - It feels like I have a companion as I wander around - this applies to all your walks. Thank you.
Yeah, I went there several times. It is super nice to walk around...except you have to walk though as part of a tour group. You are not free to wander.
This was the subject of a documentary by English gardening expert Monty Don a few years back; part of a series on Italian gardens -he liked it a lot because it is not too neat and formal and even weeds are allowed to grow in certain areas to maintain a natural look -in contrast to the highly formal and geometric baroque gardens where the plants are clipped to within an inch of their life.
I'll be watching that one now that you mention it! This gives me much inspiration for my 6 acres, half wooded, a quarter pasture and a quarter my old yard with fruit trees, herbs, flowering shrubs and perennials. Too bad Illinois is not as gorgeous as Italy!

Absolutely gorgeous. I was stationed on the USS Belknap CG-26 1986-1988, when it was the 6th Fleet Flagship home ported in Gaeta. I never knew of this, or I surely would have ventured the hour or so to see this.
Hey, I bet things were quite different then..no internet or GPS to get you around. I don't know how you did it. The roads around here are a mess. :) I like Gaeta. I need to film a walk there. We go swimming in Sperlonga every once in a while.

Hey, I'm glad you enjoyed the tour. I love the gardens, too! Some tours are in English and others in Italian. You might be able to call ahead and ask. Someone there will be able to help you. If you go, plan to go see Sermoneta as well. It is just a few minutes away. I use Duolingo to learn Italian. It is free with ads, or you can pay to have no ads. Just make sure your phone has internet when you travel as you will have no problems. I use Holafly to have internet in countries where I don’t have cell service.
