    I love this video! I’ve been singing Japanese songs for as long as I can remember, but something that I struggle with as an English speaker is that I notice my vocal chords become much more strained when I sing in Japanese. I’m a belter, and I think the way I’ve been trained to sing in English makes it difficult for me to belt or blend my voice in Japanese.

    Hi Ko,
    I've studied Japanese for 3 years now. I'm a singer (in English) and I've been having trouble with vibrato in Japanese songs, especially for sustained え and お sounds. When these vowels are held in English songs, we usually change to a similar vowel that is easier to do vibrato. But in Japanese, I noticed sometimes singers will hold these vowels, but only use a small amount of vibrato, or even none at all. Do you have any tips or comments?
    Thanks for this helpful video!
    Manakyn

    • @kovocalstudio
      @kovocalstudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Manakyn, thank you for your message and your question! Good question! Depending on the genre of music, vibrato isn't used much in Japanese songs. Many of the anime songs are Rock music and it's more likely that they avoid singing with Vibrato to respect the style. However, there are a lot of Japanese artists known for Vibrato such as Ayaka, Misha, and Naotaro Moriyama. It's hard for me to answer your questions about your voice without hearing your actual voice but If you feel difficulty singing え or お vowels, it may be that you are applying some extra tension singing those vowels. Let me know if you need more help in improving your vocal technique singing Japanese songs!

Sailor Fuku"), "Say Fanfare" by Fubuki (Hololive), etc. I also struggle with reaching high and low notes so there's that (I tend to try and match the tone of the singer instead of trying to work my voice comfortably, haha).

    • @kovocalstudio

      Good question! the "っ" has a pause between 2 syllables and ー is a sustaining tone.

    I hope you could answer this question of mine, or anyone would see this question. Why is it Japanese Singers don't do riffs or runs in thier songs? I notice this ever since but I just couldn't find any answers. 🙁

    • @kovocalstudio
      @kovocalstudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Feb Feb, Thank you for your comment! It's a great question! I think one of the reasons Japanese singers don't use many riffs and/ or runs is that Japanese music tends to focus more toward the meaning of the lyrics than melodies. Japanese music has been influenced by very old traditional genres such as Minyo and Enka where they put most of the attention towards the meaning of the words and the feel of the song rather than the technical singing style. With that said, there are many Japanese singers who use riffs such as Misha, Ayaka, and Dreams come true. They sing more so like R&B J-pop rather than typical J-pop, This is what I think based on my experiences as a vocal coach and growing up in Japan, so I hope this helps:)

    There are songs I want to sing that are in Japanese but I'm concerned about something. I'm concerned about being seen as appropriation or offensive I'm any way since I don't speak Japanese. I've been practicing pronunciation for a long time now but I just really want to respect the songs I love so much even if that means I can't sing them the way they were originally written. I don't really want to them translated into English for two reasons: it messes with lyrics and rhythms.

    • @kovocalstudio
      @kovocalstudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on the range of the song and your vocal range, but yes, it is possible. It's a good idea to change the key of the song you'd like to sing to see which key feels more comfortable for your voice. Hope this helps!
