I saw Ferrell in an interview and he said that he was touching Jimmie's leg under the water during this sketch. One of the reasons Jimmy cracked so hard lol.
yeah, and the cast tried to make him crack on purpose on multiple occasions, Cowbell being the most popular.
Oh, the comment about the touching under water gains new meaning now.
I figured that pretty much right away. There is no way, Jimmy would've cracked with the dialogue. But good to know that it is confirmed

At the risk of spoiling its bizarre genius, it's a parody of just this style of pretentious prose. 'King Solomon's Mines' or 'Gunga Din' on steroids. Ferrell loves the sound of these berserk, overheated, genre clichés. He's got an ear for mimicking this crazy shit.
I don't think they were laughing at the line, but af that same time, Rachel was stroking Will's chest hair right off.
I love that when Rachel can't hold her laugh in it looks painful. This is one of the best sketches of all time.

Kevin Connor I wish that were true. SNL needs a revamp. Almost every sketch, once the reveal of the premise happens, has no progression, except within the premise. There’s no movement. And the sketches with movement are always a breathe of fresh air. They’re rare. Essentially, hate to be an ass, but Lorne Michaels has to go before that happens probably.
It's funny most people are complaining the cast break too much but I'm just here thinking "how dead would it be if they kept straight faces the whole time". My favourite skits are when the DO crack!

Too much? I think this skit has the perfect amount of cracking, not too few, not too many! Also, sometimes they crack up in parts that aren't too funny, but here they always laugh in spots where you'd crack up too.
Easy mode: getting Jimmy Fallon to break character
Hard mode: Will Ferrell getting everyone, including himself to break character
Will was holding it but let go.
The “in the distance we heard the pounding of native drums” line is where I’d have completely lost it in this sketch 😂😂
I love the way Will reacts to Rachel laughing at his “native drums” line, he was ready to deliver that line completely in-character, it was only when she started laughing that he couldn’t stop himself.
Will Ferrell was also touching Fallon's feet and legs which caused him 2 break character 😂

Will Ferrell breaking down and laughing was the best. He is such a pro at what he does that to get him to laugh during a sketch is very tough to do. They all had such fun making this legendary sketch.
People dont know that Jimmy started laughing and breaking character because Will was actually playing footsie with him in the water and no one could see it! Thats why he was squirming!

I remember seeing this live. Me and my best friend and his dad were in tears. I’ll never forget it. I absolutely lost it when Ferrel said “In the distance we heard the pounding of native drums”.

This is one of the best parts of human life. There are so many aspects of being a human that cause stress and sometimes misery. Laughter is the best part of life in my opinion. I absolutely love SNL and just busting a gut over some completely ridiculous sketch. Thank you Lorne Michaels and every cast member. Thank you so very much.

Biel Sabas What comes to mind now, is an interview he did w/ Chris Hardwick at the Paley center in 2011 and in the Q&A part a lady asks about him breaking during SNL and he tells this thing about Will trying to break him in these sketches...there were on YT both a full vid & just this question vid (b/c they answered hilariously, Jimmy faked upset for the question :)... but I don't seem to find them now :(
