What a discovery for me? This music is music in its purest, most poetic, most intense form. It is life itself, so painful because for me it expresses the lost, unexpressed life, my own life, which I find again in this music. Each sound, in its harmonic and textural context, expresses a new world added to the previous one created by the previous sounds. This music expresses the absolute truth of "to be or not to be". For me, Thomas Schwan is the composer who dares to reach the level of the purest musical expression, free from convention. The lyrics at the beginning of this video are a shocking confirmation of my perception of this very pure and infinitely true music.
Dearest Paul, once again, I am deeply humbled by your generosity in the words you are giving me; indeed I remember writing those two works - the string quartet and string trio - imbued with a deeply tragic feeling and striving to reach a "degree zero" of music free of any stylistic convention. Again, I am deeply grateful for your words! All the best, with blessings, and talk soon!! Thomas
Mr. Nishibe, I feel deeply honored by your comment and your incredibly kind words! Thank you so much for listening both to the Bach and to this work - I feel truly humbled. All the best to you, with blessings! Thomas
Dear Paul, I am again speechless and humbled by your generous words! I deeply thank you for listening and for your amazing kindness!! With blessings, Thomas
These introductory words of your music sound quite tragic for a young composer as you certainly are. Although it offers a blink of hope as approaching the end of a quote, one must conclude that there's an inevitability of darkness and cruelty of pure existance in our universe, dominated by just fragile glimpses of light presenting all the vulnerability of our lives. Perhaps somebody wouldn't judge this musical piece of yours in this way. Anyway, the phenomena of sound in general is massively taken for granted, and the importance of such pieces is its ability to point out the essence of elementary sound and the beauty of interaction with similar raw sounds, thus explaining the secret of musicmaking in its very foundations. Stay well and keep on making music! Vanja
Dear Vanja, great to hear from you and thank you for this comment! Yes, the words are exceedingly tragic; at the same time the piece of music lives a life of its own and could be perceived in a completely different way, just as you say. At a deep level don't believe in the interaction of words (verbal thinking) and music, which lives on a completely different plane of reality. So, the purpose of these words was just to offer a glimpse of how I personally perceive this piece of music, and set a "beginning mood", while leaving open any other possible interpretation - such as these being works of "elementary sound", in your words. Still waiting to receive my copies of Scientia Sacra - will keep you posted! Talk soon! Thomas

This is the most tragic music ever heard, from Bach to Batok, and embodies all the great Western music.
