Oklahoma Gardening's Kim Rebek begins preparation for planting grapes in the small fruits garden by constructing a grape trellis system to support the weight of the grape vine.
Fantastic easy to understand video! Thank you so much for putting out detailed but not babbling info! What you are doing, why doing, and how to and products and systems and the why's of them also. Just all around fabulous!!
It is an adjustment converting empirical into metric but I can do it now out of my head. I am in NZ you see. This has been the most helpful video on growing grapes.
Man, it is really funny because today I put in the end posts for a 39 ft line. In New Zealand they don't see the end rachets so I have a strainer rachets for the two wires. I am going to have five plants with 6 feet spacing. Using some line posts called warantahs down here. It is virtually a copy of yours in the vid, with the two wires,2ft and 5 ft apart. I had a 10 ft post so I had to put it 2.5 ft ,I should have got a 8 ft, just had to dig to get in 1/3. But it is going to be the same height above ground(5.5ft). I am putting in the grapes in September which is our spring in the southern hemisphere. I have the interim to use for preparing the soil. Thank you.

Nice video content! Forgive me for the intrusion, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you thought about - Lammywalness Green Grapes Guide (should be on google have a look)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for learning how to become a successful grape grower minus the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my friend Sam at very last got astronomical results with it.
There are several factors in table grapes farming. One resource I discovered that successfully combines these is the Grape grower folio (check it out on google) it's the most useful guide that I've seen. look at the awesome information.
I am starting my wire trellis for my home grape vine...flame seedless grape I'm wondering if I need to train my vines to the upper canopy wire...or just one wire for home use good enough...
How are these holding up? Do you cement the wooden supports in? Is the wire vice extremely difficult to tighten each year? My neighbor recommended a crank setup, but the vice would be much cheaper.
I'm wondering about the end Posts. Here is Northern Illinois. Would you bury the end posts in Cement? Would cement leach into the Soil and be bad for the Grapes. About to start a new vinyard at a new property, much bigger than what we have done in the past, so the runs will be much longer.
No, its not structural, no critical load bearing. Reminds me of the time my laborer buddy came over as I was installing a 4x4 post in the garden ( about 5 ' above ground ) and he asked why I wasn't putting crete with it, and, I told him it was only for a rain gauge .
Growing Grapes at Home - It's true. Growing grapes can be done right in your own yard. You can enjoying the health, emotional and even financial rewards over time from growing grapes.
Hi James, the wire vice can actually be purchased from Midwest Vineyard Supply. Here's the link to their website! www.midwestvineyardsupply.com/default.asp
I would like to use this high cordon system but the Concord grapes I purchased seem to have the dual branches starting just a few inches from soil level. Can I just select one and have that be my main trunk to grow upward?
Yes you can pick whichever you want to be the trunk. Just make sure it is above the graft. www.evineyardapp.com/blog/2017/05/30/overview-of-grapevine-structure-and-function/ www.gardendesign.com/advice/neglected-grape-vines.html
This is what we use for our grape treillis: Vines should be spaced 8-10 feet apart. I recommend building the trellis 16-20 feet long and spacing plants evenly. The end posts needs to be very sturdy, such as 4" x 4" lumber. A center post will also be helpful to add extra support. The center post can be a metal t-post. The trellis really only needs the top wire set about 5 ½ feet above ground level. A lower wire is useful for training young vines. This one is positioned about 3 feet above ground level. For both, we use #9 wire.
My grapes have been in the ground a full year. How long does it take for the main vine to thicken up? Mine are half the size of a pencil, but 8 foot long. I usually grow veggies, so grapes are new to me.
+Jeanine Starkenberg We have to videos featuring the grape trellis in the gardens. You can find those linked below. Unfortunately they've been removed from our studio garden after a remodel. Thanks for watching! th-cam.com/video/qfpr_gLvfcE/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/4VEy6RP45Pk/w-d-xo.html
I got mine on amazon.. HILLMAN FASTENERS 123174 9 Gauge Smooth Wire, 170' for $32.50. You can buy it in several different lengths And One Way Anchor Vise Grape Trellis Tightening Vice 8 Gauge 9 Gauge 10 Gauge and 11 Gauge 10 Pack Also found on Amazon.
When u cute the wire it can widen and screw your wire vise/bite up So its good to have a file on hand and when unrolling the wire don't pull on it roll it out instead so it remains mostly straight and does not cork screw!
I was wondering if you need to pour concrete for the 4 x 4 posts. I am doing a small set up in my backyard. I just purchase the posts. But, I have seen that other people pour concrete. My plan is to have just two plants as a small experiment. Thanks!
+Ivan Barrero For this project we didn't use concrete to anchor the post into the grow. They felt the poles were deep enough in the ground to support the grapes and trellis. We hope this answers your question!
Cuantss horas frio se necesita para ser cultivada la uva.En oklahoma cual variedad se cultiva.Si quisiera una uva muy dulce pata sembrar cual me recomendarias. Gracias por su video.
It is not clear to me how your grape plants are spaced when planted. Your entire row is 24 feet and the grape plants should be 8 feet apart. Could you please tell me how you recommend placing the grape plants? Thanks! Great video.
I am a bit confused for the reason for the lower cordon wire. I've watched lot and lots of vids, but nobody has explained it. There is usually nothing on the lower wire. You mentioned "we use the lower wire to train the vine up to the top". How? You typically use bamboo or a string to train the trunk up to the top cordon, so the reason for the lower wire escapes me. Can you better explain it?
a grape is a vine...young grapes have fragile trunks and flop around they need something to hold onto to climb. Bamboo does work the same as the lower string by the time it reaches the top wire you would of most likely pruned it a few times and the stems will turn woody and harden this is when the grape can support its weight and the bottom wire can be removed. But if a bamboo stick works better just use that
Thanks for the informative video. I am a school teacher and a backyard gardener. I've cemented the 4x4 post, drilled the holes for the wire vise and used 9 gauge galvanized wire. What/How should I tighten the wire to get it taunt? Do you recommend some sort of tool or method?
So read your question,, so I tested my theory,, works great...rivet gun...once the wire is in place pull by hand cut off down to couple inch of wire past your once easy lock and use revit gun as if that wire was a rivet... your post was 8 years ago so thinking your good lol however maybe someone will read this and it will be of use to them
@crip23walk23 i wouldnt be so quick to judge. it sounds as though you have an Arbor-Type trellis system, designed as you say for having a nice little shaded area to sit under. what this woman is doing is making herself a traditional fruit bearing type trellis so she can maximize the output of quality fruit, as well as having it at an easy to work on height. i would assume that this is a test run, and that she has actually built alot more of these in her fruit orchard.
I've built mine using a 3/16" galvanized rope, however I cannot find a wire vise that's the correct size. I've been told I need a 6 gauge wire vise for the 3/16" wire rope. I'll keep hunting.
Why do you have 2 wires, when you lead the viewer into thinking that the high cordon single wire is best suited for home growers? UPDATE: OK at 6:00 you do what I thought would make sense.

Very well done video! Thank you!

Thanks Kim, great video. Exactly what I was looking for.

Nice. I’m going to have to see your new videos so I know how well this held up.
I ordered the wire vice products through Amazon. Thanks for the tip.
Awesome! Have fun!
Thanks for the tip! I am planning on building this myself and I also found the vise through Amazon.

A friend gave me a foot high table grape seedling. Is there a way to determine what grape variety I have so I can build the proper trellis?
Thank you..for sharing.. what is maximum temperature in this place guys.. I have temperature 21 to 34 degree Celcius..
Is the galvanized steel wire just the basic kind you can get at home depot or is it the high tensile galvanized steel wire?
Very good information. I want to grow Muscadine grapes in Eastern North Carolina. What type of trellis would you recommend?
Hey How about the exact distance from plant to another plant apart thank u watching from the Philippines
Helpful video but does it matter if I put my plants North to South or West to East?
No, its not structural, no critical load bearing. Reminds me of the time my laborer buddy came over as I was installing a 4x4 post in the garden ( about 5 ' above ground ) and he asked why I wasn't putting crete with it, and, I told him it was only for a rain gauge .

I am planting Concord grapes ... Is the high trellis cordon method recommended ?
Very informative video. Where did you buy the "wire bite". Looks like a great method of attaching the wire to the end posts.
Hi James, the wire vice can actually be purchased from Midwest Vineyard Supply. Here's the link to their website!

so, if I want to plant just 2 grape vines, how far apart would the end posts have to be and how many line supports would I need?
This is what we use for our grape treillis:

Where do you get your wire vice from? The one I bought does not let the wire pass through, it holds it but I cannot pull the wire through
I have a question if I will use galvanized steel wire #9 then what size wire vice should I use?
Was there a followup to this video? Would love to see how the grapes are doing almost 6 years later.

Is it best to drill the hole in the post for the wire to pass through before cementing the post in the ground? Or does it really matter? Thanks.
Chase Fraley I would say it's personal preference. Whatever you think would work best for you!

I've also seen a single wire used with a simple string tied to the vine to hold it vertical.
How do you keep the wire from coming back through? In other words, how do you secure the wire ends on the post?
naviroach I believe when they built this they screwed hook loops into the post and secured the line on the hooks.
So how would you set the posts if you were on a hill?
Do you answer questions about this system
