    The original practitioner of ringen was a perplexing man named Sir Kayfabe. He would get dressed up as an oversized key fob and went by Mr. Key Fob, but when the ringside commentators mispronounced his name, he embraced it and refused to correct them.

      Well, first thing you learn in judo is not to get your head on the ground, but always slap down after rolling onto your back. That not slapping the ground was very unsettling for me. And also the rolling, never roll over your head, could get injured.

      @@noahluppe The slapping is so you don't post out and break something; grabbing the knees or crossing your chest works just as well (probably better for beginners, honestly). So, I do more Italian Medieval Wrestling (Fiore dei Liberi's "Abrazare") and what I find interesting when put in conjunction with Ringen is just how much both are similar to other Wrestling/Grappling techniques from around the world and through time.
    Recently I saw a video of a modern Wrestler and a Judoka sparring and I was surprised with how similar the techniques were to what I do, as well as what they've shown in this video. There will always be debates on which style is better, with even very strong and convincing evidence, but it's cool to know that a lot of them share similar techniques that are clearly effective.

      In the show "Human weapon" they mention that Judo style throws would be used to get an opponent on the ground, where you could get other weapons, and you could kill your opponent. I'm not entirely sure how true that is, but considering how similar the idea is to this, I wouldn't be surprised if it was true

    • @Sebzthesmooth
      @Sebzthesmooth 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@natekelly770 yeah Judo throws to solid ground like road and concrete can definately break some bones, furthermore in judo you get trained to submit and subdue via chokes, strangles and armbars.

    "Ringen" is just the German word for classic wrestling, just without all the theater around it. Nearly every sports club here has a class for it :-)

    • @franktheprank7336
      @franktheprank7336 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes but, the ringen they are talking about IS time specific, the problem is that, since everyone was doing it they never settled for a name to it. In fact "war wrestling" at that time existed trought Europe in its entirety, and every culture had a different name for it....all of them roughly translate to wrestling, seems that it's easier to give it a generic name than dealing with having to wrap your head around every single name for every single school of it around an entire continent.

      The old style of german style wrestling has ended in early 18th century, when the last manual was written. A lot of german traditions died for the reason of the terrible 30years war, and after this war French baroque culture came to Germany, so that upper class men no more liked activities which caused sweat.

    This is kinda cool to get the historical context. I grew up wrestling in high school, and so many of the fundamentals they talked about here are the same as what we learned. We tumble to gain spatial awareness of the body when put into an unpredictable state, and grappling is less about muscling your opponent, and more about getting them off balance.

    As a fan of Pro Wrestling its fun to see how these moves are like ugly versions of pro wrestling moves due to pro wrestling being designed for spectacle and not for self defense. Pro Wrestling is such a different things being an art form but the roots of it will always be seen in little bits of different forms of competitive wrestling.
