Every player has to adapt themselves to the situation, to the tactics the opponents use. So in modern game, such terms as number 6 or number 10 doesn't mean anything(except false 9). Such no.8 or 9 or 6 were in some recent past football, and in old football.

    Piotr have you seen Argentina vs Venezuela? I can't seem to figure out a problem they've had since the silver generation. For some reason (lack of creativy, fear) they try to play off the back but can't cut through. They end up passing the ball horizontally at the defender line back and forth.
    This is how they came out: 5-2-3
    Armani
    Montiel - Foyth - Mercado - L.Martinez - Tagliafico
    Lo Celso - Paredes (excellent midfield, maybe lacking a destroyer like Ascacibar)
    Messi - Lautaro Martinez - Pity Martinez
    Just watch the first 5 minutes. They passed the ball between the central defenders, passed to the left back who got shut down by 2 players. So he passed the ball back. They circulated the ball all the way to the RB who had the same thing happen to him and passed back.
    Watching this video it just seems so easy how they cut through and get the ball to the midfielders but Argentina can't seem to move the ball forward for the life of them. How is this possible? Maybe not enough people in midfield? Most of the time they were marked.

    • @andrecassanelli183
      @andrecassanelli183 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the most urgent problem for Argentina is that Aguero, Dybala and Messi need to play together. They are their best players!
      I would set them up inside a diamond 4-3-1-2, focusing on a lot of fluidity between the front three.
      Something like this:
      GK: G.Rulli/W.Benítez
      RB: G.Mercado/G.Montiel
      CB: N.Otamendi & F.Fazio; W.Kanneman & G.Pezzela/Foyth
      LB: N.Tagliafico/M.Acuña
      DM: L.Paredes/L.Biglia
      CM: G.Lo Celso & S.Ascacibar; M.Lanzini & E.Pérez
      CAM: L.Messi; Á.Correa (to play LF if changing the formation)
      ST: P.Dybala & Aguero; M.Icardi & L.Martínez/C.Pavón (the same thinking of Ángel).
      I think Di Maria and Mascherano should just retire from the national team as they age and a new generation takes over. Maybe we can say the same for Romero and Armani, but goalkeepers usually can play more year at a "top" level.

    • @georgesherta9233
      @georgesherta9233 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrecassanelli183 dybala and messi don't play well together because they are too similar, and aguero doesn't perform like he does for club, even though they are probably the best players. Also I think Di Maria is still capable of playing at the top level, he's still great for PSG...

    • @andrecassanelli183
      @andrecassanelli183 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@georgesherta9233 this is just an excuse of a manager who can't handle big egos. Of course you can play them together, you just need to make the tactics work. Messi can play with freedom in the middle and Dybala can make a partnership with Aguero upfront.

    • @georgesherta9233
      @georgesherta9233 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrecassanelli183 the way they both like to play is as a free midfielder or second forward off a main striker like higuain/suarez for respective clubs, I guess aguero or higuain for national team, and that means the end up occupying the same spaces and crowding the middle. Tactically speaking, one of them would end up out of their preferred position, which hasn't worked in the past.

    • @andrecassanelli183
      @andrecassanelli183 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@georgesherta9233 actually, Messi has been playing as a right forward for quite some time, he has played as false 9 and even as an attacking midfielder for Argentina in the past. He is a genius and capable of playing in every position in the final third. You will probably see him adjusting his game as he age towards playing more in a center role, like a traditional 10 and relying more on his intelligence rather than his speed and agility.
      That wouldn't create any conflict between Dybala and Messi, as Dybala is playing more at the front with Aguero.
      Of course, this would create a side weak at the defensive end, specially in the middle, where Messi wouldn't apply the same pressure as other players. Of course, that's why the would require a destroyer midfielder, in the likes of Ascacibar or Enzo Pérez to run their lives off when defending. But also, that's why I said the team should focus on playing with possession, relying on the smartness of their strikers and Messi.
      Milan used to play a lot like this during the late 00's.
      Imagine Paredes in the role of Pirlo (not as great but better defensively, and good enough to make it work); Ascacibar in the role of Gattuso. Messi is a way better version of Kaka, maybe not as fast but twice as intelligent. Dybala and Aguero would be like Inzaghi and Schvechenko. It won a Champions League.

    PSG don't have enough forward participation in the ball progression in these clips, especially out wide. Half the time a midfielder or Di Maria gain ground through ball reception they have to return to sender because of immediate pressure and lack of continuation options. Threading the needle like they did is important when there is true heavy midfield action, but in this case it's slow and more conservative because the defense and mids are working the lines in isolation by default.

      Argentina sees Messi as god... Everyone in that country does, including their managers.
      Each and every single one of them tries to put the weight of their team and country over his shoulders, without any good support. Not that they're bad players, but they don't have a good game play/system. They have been trying to build one that revolves around Messi (unsuccessfully tho).
      The national teams don't work together as often as a club does - Barcelona works every week, year after year, and they have their shit worked out ,even before Messi and Guardiola - and the Argentina team tries to duplicate a system that they believe revolves around him. But in Barcelona he's just a part of the system, he's not the system. That's what I believe Argentina managers get wrong.
      How can they always go so far? Because he's the GOAT

      @@PiotrFoot I believe it is because they try to build their team on Messi rather than using him as one of the team. They actually don't have a terrible team.

    +Piotr Foot Any chance you could make a video like this but for Attacking Midfielders off the ball?? I'm always trying to work on my movement and with your tactical brilliance, that will help me out so much!! Thanks for all your videos, they are brilliant

    Great video. Not exactly rocket science, but this is some very original content (a lot more original than the last big Champions League game that you can see on many different channels). Also your followers have started gathering some tactical knowledge over time, this sort of more precise/detailed stuff can help a lot. Those who play football can also use some of this type of knowledge. Even on small fields (say 7v7), a midfielder (or someone that plays a little more up the pitch) has got to drop to help the backline. What to do when this midfielder has some opponent jackass that decide to follow him? This video answers it.

    Muito interessante seu vídeo, hoje vemos um jogo num plano muito tático e coletivo então acabmos esquecendo dos padrões e das condutas individuais

    I think if Di Maria drop to receive the ball the Marseille defender should follow Di Maria that might be pretend Di Maria to get a lot space and time control the ball

      Disturbing the defence line is the worst thing you can do as a defender.

    Hell yeah. Congrats on another fire vid, Piotr. Plus this one helps, I was struggling to evaluate Paredes' performance as a 6, so this was comprehensive and helpful.
    Quick question: I hear some rumors about a possible transfer of Ander Herrera to PSG... Would that be something that makes sense to you? I feel like Paris is still struggling to garnish their midfield, but this sort of player would be exactly the kind that might tie everything together nicely, whatchu think?

      I completely agree and with Lo Celso returning, they will cover all middlefield holes they had over the past.
