I was worried when I kept reading interviews where they were concerned people wouldn't like their new sound... but honestly this just sounded like Spiritbox to me and I loved it
This has basically been Mike’s viewpoint even before they announced they signed with Rise (basically the release of Constance). Every time they released something, he thought people might hate it, and the band wouldn’t continue the momentum.
@@bradkohl99 well in a way he's right because there will always be people who don't like a certain thing but i think a majority of the spiritbox fan base is so far digging the new songs and the new and interesting mix of them.
The Hysteria breakdown is like top 3 breakdowns of the year. The song itself feels like a 2017 spritbox song until the breakdown and it turns into an eternal blue type breakdown it’s brilliant
Glad they're leaning into Courtney's ability to write super catchy hooks. I see too many people complaining about how they're "pop" now-- and like, even if it is (which imo it isn't really - more nu metal/alt rock if anything) it still sounds sick.
Never thought of it like that. Definitely hints of Nu Metal rebirth but to call them metalcore is not doing them justice. Alternative rock is definitely appropriate when thinking of their work from beginning to now. This band ceases to amaze me💙
I hope they do break into the mainstream because they have enough underground influence and prowess to catapult a sway in the scene of this type of music. This is very refreshing.
I'm absolutely in love with this new EP. So much influence from 90s bands that have a special place in my heart particularly Garbage. I'm also getting NIN, Static-X, maybe even a tiny little bit of Fear Factory. I love this direction!
I feel like you are one of the few reaction channels that actually appreciates bands for their little changes and growth that a band naturally goes through, instead of criticizing every single little thing that would be different from their previous stuff. Thanks for being a chill dude! I love music of all types and it is great to see someone in the metal reaction scene who has a similar mentality
Rotoscope "sounding a bit poppy" Well... It reminded me of Poppy the artist, more specifically 'X' & 'scary mask'. Sew me up definitely has a KoRn riff in it, imagine having a JD guest vocal on a Spiritbox track!
I really appreciate your take on this EP. Listening along with you I just kept saying "true! true, true". Such a good EP. Production DEFINITELY leaves more to be desired, but they did NOT disappoint with the songwriting & music video for Rotoscope is one of the coolest MV I've ever seen.
I got worried because Spiritbox kept voicing how worried they are that this "new sound" wouldn't stick... And when those opening lines hit of Rotoscope I was SCARED. I. Was. So. Scared. Luckily for me, some Nu-metal esch guitars kicked in and Hysteria is a masterpiece. I love this sound just as if not more than Eternal Blue
Such a pleasant surprise. What band just throws you a 3 song EP out of nowhere not that long after their album? A lot of different influences coming out in this one. Rotoscope gives me like a NIN mixed with Slipknot and Garbage. Hysteria is like the classic Spiritbox sound just refined. Sew Me Up even has those EDM influences. Very interesting direction this band is taking.
I had listened to all 3 before I watched your reaction...was patiently waiting for Hysterias breakdown to hit and see your reaction to it....I was headbangin
Love a sneaky 3 piece release on a Thursday! Hysteria is such a banger, I had the same anticipation then reaction to the breakdown and the end of the song too haha
I expected a change for spiritbox and i am all for it i grew up to my dad blasting thrash and death including that hair metal but also going into early metalcore myself got into early fear factory so these singles for me just fits 🤘🤘
I like it... Far removed from their usual stuff, but I was still happily jamming those tracks all day. It's not like they're not allowed to write another Rule of Nines or Holy Roller either... I'm sure we'll just get whatever they're feeling at the time and I'm sure I'll love it.
Yeah this is going on the radio I reckon, even here where we don't get behind metal as much as Europe etc. Yes I got the Garbage vibe as well. So 90s. Side note - please tell me that you're going to the Mark of Cain at the Gov. I'm legit thinking about driving over for it. I saw them a few times back in the day when I was in Perth. Once with Tumbleweed & that was sick. Seeing them in home turf would be awesome. I'm going to try to get around Oz to all the venues that have like become legendary, the ones left anyhow. It's 30 years of me going to gigs so yeah ha I need to see more than Melbourne, Perth & Sydney
@@Roguenjosh when I was living in Perth it was often a gig of Tumbleweed & MoC & it was good times even if I did have to use a fake ID on the rare occasion I got carded & couldn't blag my way out of it ha.
My first time hearing this. Spiritbox is always very...tasteful. Classy. That is not an insult. This is some primo metal. Even the ugly parts are somehow pristine. Agreed on wishing them more mainstream exposure. They deserve to be huge.
What a great release from Spiritbox!! Totally agree it shows their range and a slight shift in sound. Upon first listen I was thinking about the new Thornhill in terms of a more pop vocal style with some heavy grooves...Casanova and Rotoscope would make an awesome mix.
Goes without saying, but bands evolve and grow overtime so naturally a different sound will be made and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. For me, Spiritbox have nailed it. They've taken pieces of their older music and melded it with a bit of new, it just feels so natural to me. They've always had amazing usage of clean vocals and screams with some tracks featuring more of one or the other. Can't wait to see what they do next!
Fantastic ep, especially Hysteria! It took me a couple of listenings to really dig it, I think some fans are just too hurry to like everything immediately; some music might take more than 1 listen to click for you.
They're kinda like the Muse of heavy metal: a band that can mix and match as many styles as they want, but at the end of the day it's always fantastic and it always sounds unmistakably like them. Elitists will always find a reason to be pissed at anything and I don't care, this single is brilliant.
Just subbed, great reaction. Spiritbox are really revolutionizing music. Love the band. I really recommend you listen to Invocation - Atlas album. Recommend reacting to Forward motion - Surface Detail - The Veil together as they flow into each other. Have a good one
Spot on reaction. I would recommend this on your Twitch stream but I don't use that platform. I would love to see some Dexcore Reactions on your channel! If you aren't familiar with them, they're a Japanese visual kei metalcore/deathcore band. They released a new song and music video for "The Light". It's not even on Spotify yet.
there's gotta be some musical term for those thunderous tones that are laid down, almost initially feeling out of key for the song, but really just fill out the song. i love that stuff!
No matter how many times I hear it, Rotoscope just does nothing for me. And yet Sew Me Up and Hysteria are so damn good. I hope they are more indicative of their new sound going forward and not Rotoscope, but I doubt it :(
I prefer their older sound, but I feel they pushed it to where they couldn't do anything original anymore.. So a new take is great, my only issue is there not being enough guitar/vocal hooks.. But I'm super curious to hear what's new from them. Reminds me of Cheslea Wolfe, how every album is basically a new genre.

I heard them from the 1st time a couple years ago and think they've been pushing out gold. All their sounds are good to me.
The end of hysteria makes me feel the same way the end of the Mara effect makes me feel.
Tragically satisfied?
Yep. And it just makes me think of some person trapped in a dark room with flashing lights and no hope of escape for whatever is coming.

Yes they live up to their hype, I feel like this is a band that will always do the music they want, without complying to what others think.
💯
I don't really care what label the haters slap on this new style, I absolutely love it!
It’s amazing
That breakdown in Hysteria sounds almost like a car horn to me, but like in a good way, it's different! Can't go wrong with either track though.
I didn’t expect that to come so heavy. I love it. Great review and great songs.
dam I never thought of that and now I just imagine some dude in his car violently honk the horn in the breakdown lol
It's like a tractor trailer just laid on it's air horn.

The Sew Me Up verse riff sounds like the verse riff on Korn's Did My time

That guitar is CHONKY!
