Best Fighting game ever! I have played this game I think more than 1000 hours and still learned something new from this video. This game is just special and game art is beautiful!
Wow. Going back and watching this is incredible. Aris is so Type A here. You can tell how badly he wants to make a good impression and get people to like this game that he cares so much about. It's night and day from how he is now: so relaxed and totally apathetic to what people think of him (if they're dickheads of course, he's pretty nice to people who are nice to him).
This game was amazing. I love it Such cool fighters, stages, soundtrack.. And so many things to unlock.. Totally different from today where you have to buy season passes and it's all about online gaming
It's impressive is how complex the nuances in the systems are while also being barely noticeable to the average player. Similarly impressive is this being a raw from-memory tutorial. Fantastic work. I'll be looking forward to more of your SCII coverage.
Great video! This was the peak of the series and it's never been quite the same since. I didn't even know half of these mechanics existed back in the day, but now that I do it just deepens the game for me. Easy to pick up: hard to master. Win win
I played this game religiously when I still had my old copy, but never really bothered to learn all of the little intricacies of the game. I was a kid after all, I just mashed buttons. Haha. Learning all of the things in the video, it's going to feel like a completely new game when I play it again for the first time in over four years.
Da bes game! Thanks for making this, it's a pretty great refresher. Some stuff I noticed, sorry if anyone else already mentioned it: Soul Charge is actually done with A+B+K, not A+B+G. Step Guard doesn't block lows, so lows that cover sidestepping like Mitsu 2K can beat it. On air control I don't think it was mentioned that holding G lets you fly further than normal. Important to note that G+7_8_9 has some startup to get off the ground, but jumping attacks, i.e. 8B, are airborn from frame 1.
Me and a close friend at uni have started picking this game up and having small sets with each other just casually. I main Talim and he mains Heihachi. I was wondering if you still do Soul Calibur videos? I wanted to request a Talim character tutorial because I can't seem to see one on this channel. If you could I'd really appreciate it. This game doesn't get enough love.
Amazing tutorial! Soul Calibur 2 was my first and the rest is history. I haven't played SC2 in years. I had no idea that it was so in-dept. When I play fighting games, I usually just play for fun, I don't really care for frame data and all the other stuff. But I hope a lot people buy this, since everyone claims SC2 is the best Soul Caliber in all the series. I personally love them all. At least people can't complain about the original characters being swapped out. Well, technically they're back.
you got it backwards bro, James Chen is the Aris of 2-D fighters! ARIS is KING of tutorials! he always makes them VERY educational, hilarious, and SUUUUUUUPPPPPPPPEEEEEERRRR SIMPLE!!!! lol love ya aris!!!! hey aris do you take offence to being corrected if not i found a couple alternates that may help or make it simpler 1 on the feng guide you did and another on the dragunov combo guide come to think of it its more of a tip rather than a correction lol i'll post the rest on the actual video
I used to play this game when I was like 12/13 years old. Had no idea what I was doing but I certainly had a lot of fun. It will be interested going back to play it now that I'm a little more adept at fighting games in general. Nice vid btw.
Thanks for the tutorial Aris, looking forward to the character specific guides! Btw were you able to figure out how to make a digital PS2 memory card on your PS3?
60% of this video is advanced stuff. You don't need everything in this video to play, only to play at the highest level. This game is fucking hella simple compared to SC4 and 5.
(cont) Jump attacks done off the ground are also airborn from frame 1. Crushes - to clarify, vertical attacks crush horizontal attacks 100% of the time, unless they're K attacks which always trade.
The values I created there were based on the hit duration value, in which As will have active frame earlier than their expected impact (to make them true horizontals). So if the A is blocked on its earliest active frames, then it won't be as positive as if it was blocked on its latest. Anyway, most characters with good As would be +1~2 in most cases. Of course, Ivy, Voldo and other characters with odd As would not; however, they would still be near plus.
Yo Amigo, great video! Been playing the SC series most of my life but not in a serious manner (unlike some of the other fighters out there). When this SCII remake was announced I decided to finally take the plunge and try out SCV. Where do you think the best place to start for gaining an understanding of the SCV mechanics would be?
Great vid, think I learned something new in the 2G bug/throw break advantage bug. There's also the post GI/clash throw bugs which weren't covered but I think those might be banned from tournaments anyway? Getting hype regardless, going to rinse this online if it's as good as SCV's.
Thanks Aris for putting up your knowledge on this game. Me and my girl were looking at some of the video earlier and already there was so much we were completely ignorant about when we were kids. Big props!
The last Soul Blade game I played was Soul Caliber for Dreamcast. I absolutely loved that game and Soul Blade is one of my favorite fighting games ever. How does SC2 compare to SC1?
If you could Aris, would you mind making a Taki Tutorial? 8-wayrun doesn't really have shit for her on SC2(I think the threads got deleted or buried over the years.) and I really wanted some insight on the character, True EC was something I wanted to know more about.
I forgot all about Advance and Retreat Guard - but I don't remember AG and RG being effected by weight classes. Do you have link going into detail about that?
Wait a minute, I'm confused. At the beginning of this video, Aris talks about Soul Calibur VI being the current game up to date in the franchise, and this video was noted to be published in 2013; yet SCVI doesn't come out until five years later in October 2018. What is this sorcery? Or am I missing something?
@@lolkiu64 I was not expecting a reply to this comment as old as it is lol. I know of Soul Blade, I'm just not very keen on the lore of the franchise at all.
I personally think little bugs can add depth and make a game, sometimes (Street Fighter has a lot of nibbles like this) and I like your analysis of step-guard. Though other times they can break it too (G22 stuff in SCIII xD?).
Something about StepG, it will fail to all lows that track since you can't StepG into a low block. Also, almost all single As give +1~2 on block, so someone StepGing will be prone to block into disadvantage - this is different than every SC after in which As did not give a plus on block.
I see well i fire up my ps2 version of the game and started doing the stuff in this tutorial. I can see where you're coming on her poor step. Should I still be using even though it's not as good as others? Also where would you rank Talim on the tier list.
is there any agreed upon tier list? X/Ivy/Mitsurugi as top? I honestly just wanna know where Taki is (66AA~214A+K is guaranteed on arcade but not on console btw, will the port be arcade perf?)
Aah, I miss the days when Aris would hang out in Gamestop with a grumpycat impression on his face for his video icons. M e m o r i e s s s s s s s s s s . . . . .
Backdash damage? I wondered why you didn't mention Nightmare's bA moves from side stance, the one that causes him to spin and go backwards- probably that fact. And with B's crushing A's... It's too risky now. It used to be space, now it's just flash.
Is there any similar info available for SCIII or changes compared to SCII? How about changes between SCII and SCII HDO? Any help would be much appreciated! Also, could you possibly help with an SCIII AE movelist? Thanks and Regards!
I thought most single As were around -3 to 0 on block? At least that's what the frame data taken from Caliburforum/SC.com says. I don't think Namco ever released the SC2 frame data so it's hard to know for sure.
Really good tutorial I love SC2 although it disappointed me back in the day due to the awesomeness that was SC1 on the dreamcast this one just felt less polished and slick overall. I like SC 1 and V the most (love the fighting in V but hate the crap character selection and lacking one player mode). 8wayrun didn't exist when sc2 was out... there was another website(annoys me that I can't remember the name of it atm) but the owner disappeared and the website went down, hence the birth of 8WR shortly after
Also, i've noticed that when someone guard breaks you you can sometimes recover faster by tapping 6+G? Specifically i've noticed that nightmare has AABB and the third hit GCs so setup the next B, however sometimes I'm able to actually GI the last B though that's usually because i'm frantically tapping directions and G. What exactly is this?
TL;DR: SC rewards skill but doesn't punish button mashers too hard, but has started steering away from that since SC2 SC2 was my introduction to the franchise, but I don't think it is solely bias when I say SC2 was the best installment of the series. Are there any attacks that benefit from your character leaning back when you evade?
so can you GI a guard crushing move? I don't think so but I also didn't think it was mentioned
TL;DR: SC rewards skill but doesn't punish button mashers too hard, but has started steering away from that since SC2
SC2 was my introduction to the franchise, but I don't think it is solely bias when I say SC2 was the best installment of the series. I think what makes Soul Calibur stand out among fighting games is 2 unique aspects that arise from its engine. Most fighting games punish you for defense in some way, and usually have a rudimentary defense system anyways. Take Street Fighter, for example. You block by holding the direction away from your opponent, but you still take damage. Obviously, it would be stupidly OP if that simple blocking mechanic prevented you from taking any damage, but the SC engine does prevent all damage. But what they did was give you multiple hit boxes and the ability to only block one at a time, thereby making blocking all damage fair. Which leads me to the next thing that makes SC amazing. This isn't correct. Chip damage is only occurred from specials not normals in SF, at least in 3rd strike the best of the series
Agreed, back in the day I found once a player was decent you couldn't bulldog them without putting some thought into the mix up. In SC2 you had a lot more opportunities to download your opponent, you could block forever if your were good enough. Then it was more about teasing out the person then worrying about the unique situations the character could put you in. I love Tekken but that game is a massive knowledge check in most match ups. SC is more like a mind check, you will feel truly hopeless on a fundamental level when someone is just better than you.
