    Seriously, thank you! I'm a broke hobby artist and can't afford proper drills for hard steel. By learning this I can stretch a normal metal drill a lot longer than one hole which was the limit. Seriously, thank you!!

      There's a few ways, what size hole you drilling, and always use a lubricant. Heat it what causes most issues with bits. If I'm drilling a small whole, I won't even use a bit. Self tapping screws will go through metal, and some concrete nails is will through thinner metal, you just have to grind a Line or two up, to work as a flute

    So basically ive learned here
    Dont use water to cool down the drill bit.
    Don't wear glove when using a grinder. Apart from that brilliant video thank you for sharing I just 💓a useful man.💋

    If you need the drill and you don't have anything but a broken drill, this is a good skill to have. Remember , .practice makes perfect, or darn close to it. It's good to know how to do this.

    Besides the criticism, he drilled a successful hole without the bit jumping around from not having it center punched, didn't see any overheating (sign of a sharp bit) didn't use anything to cool the bit while drilling, in all, I say, nice drilling

    Grind across the entire face of the wheel. It is getting too hot and you are softening the drill. The bigger the drill the slower the speed. Use cutting oil to reduce heat and save the drill life. The drill has not been pointed.

      hi have been in presision engineering for 60 years drills have to be ground according to the material they are to driil brass and free cut alloy needs a negative cuting edge to stop grabing the work piece i have used drill griding units to get angles for diferant materials you are best to hand grind it takes years of practice

    You'll notice the hole a bit bigger than the bit- not ground evenly on each shoulder, and one side cutting- thus the chips instead of ribbons. More practice and a good 59* cut and it would work better.

      Personally I sharpen my drills on a water cooled grindstone. The drill bit stays absolutely cool. And I don't drill in steel without using any kind of cooling fluid either.
      An amateur who doesn't know how to do things right shouldn't teach novices.

    Never ever ever EVER! wear gloves around ANY! rotary power tools.
    Also, cut off about an inch from both of those drills and try that again with water. You can't let your drill turn blue in any way, even right at the outer most points of the cutting edge. It will make the drill brittle and cause it to prematurely chip or break. Keep your wheel clean and sharp, use light cuts, and cool often with water or coolant.

    • @daveticehurst4191
      @daveticehurst4191 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      + killer 52lt Total rubbish. HSS can be heated to red hot and bent, without effecting its hardness. Have a google HSS and read for yourself. We used to make purpose ground boring bars from straight rod HSS, get them red hot and bend the offset requires. Then grind the tool to make the cutting edges, works great.

    • @killer52lt
      @killer52lt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try doing that but grinding your sharp edge before you heat it and bend it. Your edge will be brittle and chip.

    • @daveticehurst4191
      @daveticehurst4191 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +killer 52lt. STOP talking rubbish. READ up about HSS on Google. It works fine, I have been in toolmaking over 40 Years with NO problems.
      Yes it will be a problem with Carbon Steel, but unless you buy crap tools from China, most Engineering Tool Suppliers only sell HSS. I see you subscribe to ave ! I need to say no more, he is an idiot too, talks total c**p.

    • @killer52lt
      @killer52lt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      40 years of doing something wrong means little. go blue a drill and punch it through a hole. tell me what your edge looks like... assuming you don't weld your drill in the hole.

    • @daveticehurst4191
      @daveticehurst4191 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +killer 52lt This will be my last note to you, as you are such an A******e and will not believe the truth. HSS can NOT be Tempered. Go read it for yourself instead of being an Armchair Machinist Knowitall. People like you who spread false information should not be allowed near a keyboard.

    vu le traitement infligé lors de cet affûtage si l'on peut dire, ce forêt est foutu et détrempé il ne pourra plus exécuter des perçages corrects, quand j'affûtes manuellement mes forêts je les affûtes avec une meule micro-grains spéciale et pas ici comme il procède, il faut agir en essayant de ne pas trop faire chauffer la partie forante et bien respecter les angles de coupes et le dé-talonnage pour les copeaux et surtout retremper le forêts après,ici on voit une vidéo a l'arrache.

      @@ericjude8618 ..... No not at all. There are many videos that show amatures how to sharpen drill bits as well as other tools correctly. Of course as with other subjects one can discuss whether one method or the other is the best. I will correct my statement from all wrong to at least 80%. I do not have a video camera and would never maintain that I am perfect at doing it and therfore would never make a video showing others how to sharpen drill bits. However I do know how and have sharpend hundreds of times for my self (even though it takes me longer because my eyesight is no longer what it used to be) and I have sharpened bits from 3 mm upwards. Fact is the biggest mistake this man is making is the amount of pressure he is applying to the grinding stone. They are dark blue by time he is finished. That should never be the case. He gives a thumbs up and i not even finished. Practice, practice, practice ... you'll get there too! It is not my intention to insult anyone here, but if one is going to show others how to do something then it should not be below average.

    Its burnt now useless for the likes of stainless steel wind posts nobody wants a soft tip on a building site in the middle of nowear on a price, i learnt fitting those less pressure speed= less heat in the drillbit pre drill large holes & lube recomended, bottle of water or pot to cool it between grinds using a 4" Grinder on the floor with either a flaping disc (like sand paper flaps) or 1-1.5mm sliting cutting disc because it flexes away from the drill unlike the thick discs allowing better control of pressure get rid of the glove on the right hand doing the work as others have said besides safety u can tell how hot its getting through flesh better to keep it cool in your pot, the closer u grind to the centre spindle the slower less heat u create as well as reducing the flex (tip For re shaping a broken tip use the drill in reverse grind the general angle u want to suite the job your doing be it metal drilling shallower angle cut or steeper angled countersinking, u can try footing the grinder hold the drill with 2 hands but go slow to allow for bent drill wobble what ever u do) now u have a general point hold the grinder to the floor with the gloved left hand, metal guard resting on the floor (threaded handle removed if need be) drill bit in the right hand goggles on start flatting the back off slopeing slightly away from the cutting leading edge rotate 180* for the other side, keep going keeping it even & cooled until the front edge is sharp now wipe any metal off of the edge with the gloved hand (turn off the grinder when doing this & keep your cable tidy an eye on your surroundings for pigeon toe'd fools clumsy people!) lastly u will notice the back side or opposite to the cutting edge may be proud or high this needs to be flated off at a slight angle so the first thing that touches your material is the sharpend side u dont want to end up with a back edge skating useless whisk, practice makes perfect (always make sure your comfortable before proceding).

      Tony, Sounds like you know what you're talking about. Any chance you could post a video? A picture or video is worth thousands of even the best words.
      I understand the complaints about this video, but you have to acknowledge, at least this guy went to the trouble to post. As for the complaints about no narration, I've been a professional craftsman for 50 years, and many of the best tips I've learned were taken in silently while I watched someone do something or use a method I hadn't yet come across. Those who bother to complain that this video omits verbal instruction are IMO babies wanting to be spoon fed. Serious men demonstrate for those with eyes to see.

      Me neither. At first he heat them up way too much.
      I use a precision sharpening jig (Tormek DBS-22) fitted on a water cooled grindstone to sharpen my drills bits. They stay completely cool during the process and they cut like a dream. And no matter how good you're at sharpening drills by hand I doubt you can competite with this jig.

      Viral Clown drill bits heat up from use. its called friction. by that logic of over_heating temperd material then all PYREX should be thrown out after the first use, no?
