    When I research new bike trails to ride I use the AllTrails app (love it!) for discovery and TH-cam to see what the trail looks like. Many times, any questions I may have (What does the trail look like? How well taken care of is the trail? How wide is the trail? Does it look like a trail we can pull a kids trailer on? How does the new detour go? Are there many places to stop? Where does it tend to flood? How does this trail connect to that trail?) can be answered by a simple video like this. Unfortunately there are a lot of trails that I can’t find videos on or they are way out of date. Hopefully this video will help others who may want to quickly see a trail to decide if it’s a good fit for their ride style.

    Rode the trail today and got some great pictures of the train bridge and signage along the way. I parked at Sugar Creek Preserve and made trail access very easy along with parking and restrooms if needed. A large portion of the trail had signage for under construction but the only thing I could tell was lack of chunked limestone. The trail overall was pretty smooth sailing except for a .5 miles of the trail very early on otherwise I think they listed to riders complaints and improved the trail conditions.

      Nice! With loose gravel gone the trail ride will be much better! Thanks for the update!

      It's a trail worth checking out, the longer you wait, the more packed the gravel will become.

    If you ever happen to make it down all the way to Southern Illinois, I would highly recommend the Tunnel Hill State Trail, but you might want to wait for gas prices to go down for an at least a 6 hour drive from Chicagoland.

      That trail is on Rails to Trails Conservancy’s Top 10 list for Illinois trails. It’s definitely a trail I will ride! Thanks for the suggestion!

    Nice ride. Your wife sure can pedal fast. There appeared to be very few others on that path. Was this a weekday?
    Regarding the gravel. Last year I rode the Des Plaines River Trail. Some of it got washed out due to heavy rains so they put down gravel in numerous parts of the trail. The gravel was large loose rocks and difficult to ride through. I rode through the same areas again about 3-4 weeks later and the loose gravel sections were smooth well packed limestone with very little sign of rocks. I don't think that weather or bike traffic can breakdown gravel that quickly so I'm thinking that maybe they used some type of machine to break down the gravel or they went back and covered the coarse gravel with fine limestone. Because that path was in excellent condition in just a few weeks time.

      Hey Wally! As far as my wife, what it comes down to is weight. My bike was carrying a lot more weight when you factor in the weight difference between my wife and I and I was carrying an extra battery + 5 bottles of water + all my CynicalZombie gear. So when we were going through that fresh gravel it was affecting her less than me. As you can see, she didn't want to wait for me. lol. It was a Friday in May that we rode this trail so that's likely why it wasn't that busy. Was the gravel on the Lake or Cook county side of the Des Plaines River Trail? It's very possible I just happened to ride Wauponsee at a bad time and days or weeks later it was all fixed. I hope it was. The trail is nice and the loose fresh gravel ruins part of the trail. Let's hope this new snow melts FAST!

      @@Cynical_Zombie Actually I was kidding because your time lapse video always makes it look lile she is pedaling really fast. 😃The gravel was well into the Lake county portion of the trail. I'm curious how it went from so rocky to so smooth in a matter of weeks. I was not expecting that. The weather only gets better from here on 👍

      Gotcha LOL this is one of the videos where she gets way out ahead of me! It might just be a testament to how well Lake County takes care of their trails. Leaving lots of loose gravel in my opinion is dangerous. Maybe they think that too and used machinery to pack it down soon after the load was dumped.

      I'm planning to drive down to the Fort Meyers/Naples FL area in a few weeks. Taking my E-Bike. I'll be getting plenty of riding in at that time. 😎🌞

    Was this a limestone trail when you went through? Currently by me this trail has one inch unpacked gravel. This trail has always kicked up small little rocks.

    • @Cynical_Zombie
      @Cynical_Zombie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Parts of it were crushed limestone (the good parts lol) but there was TONS of unpacked gravel when heading South from the Midewin Trailhead. Even with my fat 4 inch tires it was not fun. I'm not a fan of using gravel on a bike trail in the first place but if you are going to use gravel, PACK IT DOWN to make it safer!

      @@Cynical_Zombie this use to be such a nice trail in this area. It was all limestone up until the winter of 2021 when the put down the one inch gravel. My one inch tires are useless in it lol

      That sucks. The people who are in charge of trails should be regular trail users... that way shit like this doesn't happen. It definitely ruins that part of the trail and it's less safe to ride on.

      @@Cynical_Zombie just got to the part of the video where you hit the unpacked gravel. Everyone I’ve come across has had difficulty with that unpacked gravel. One guy I couldn’t tell if he was drunk or just having a hard time lol.
