  • The front axle is very worn out.. no surprises here... can't expect it to be perfect for what I paid for it. This should be a fun repair. Thanks for Watching Kids! Appreciate you stopping by.

    Great vid for the front wheels, which many “look before you buy” vids completely missed. Amateurs. I’m in the market cor an 8N. Thanks so much! :)

      Glad it was helpful! Fortunately there are plenty of reproduction 8n parts still available. Any 8n with a loader on it should be suspect for a worn out front end... while extremely useful, they put a LOT of stress on the front axle and steering components. Good luck on your tractor hunt.

    Considering the tractor is 66 years old that is just normal wear from lack of grease. Every joint on that tractor is serviceable and I have rebuilt many N series tractor front ends that were way worse than what you have and those N series tractors never had a front end loader attached. The worst repair is the pivot pin in the axle but it is not bad either. All of the bearings can be sourced cross referenced in your local area or order them online.

    Yep you got a little slop there but it's a 60 some year old tractor with a loader on it. Just shows you what a lack of maintenance will do over time. A few bushing, new wheel bearings, and maybe a few tie for ends and it will be good as new, nothing that can't be fixed over the weekend when you get all the parts.

    • @yourbeekeeper

    That just goes to clearly demonstrate what a front end loader does to the front axle together with an almost total lack of grease.
    At least it doesn't look as though someone has welded the king pins and spindles! I would be surprised if the steering box doesn't need some servicing as well. Get some penetrating fluid on those adjustable axle bolts in the mean time.

    I made a mistake with the first 8N I ever bought. I put it in 4th gear and headed down the highway. The front end started shaking and nearly threw me off.

    • @yourbeekeeper
      @yourbeekeeper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +hlyautey hahaha... that sounds exactly like my experience... unfortunately my 4-th gear experience was on a street with cars parked on both sides... so while I was trying to hold onto this bucking bronco I was also concerned about bashing neighbors cars... hahaha.. fortunately things got under control without any bent sheetmetal. Thanks for watching.

    • @hlyautey
      @hlyautey 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +yourbeekeeper In my case the steering box bearings were destroyed. In your case I hope it is ONLY the bearings.

    • @yourbeekeeper
      @yourbeekeeper  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My issue was very worn spindle bushings, bearings and center pin/bushing. I have a video when I replaced the front axle parts. All is good now...fortunately I didn't have to get into the steering box.

    • @farmliving8471
      @farmliving8471 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +hlyautey my husband did the same thing just a few months ago... we knew the steering was a bit sloppy when we bought the tractor since the steering wheel could be turned from the 7 o'clock to the 12 o'clock position before the wheels would start turning. After we got it home, he wanted to show the neighbors our new tractor and so drove it down the road in 3rd gear. Even in just 3rd gear the front wheels started going into a seizure and nearly self-destructed. Was just glad to see that he was able to get the tractor slowed down quickly and back to the house. So now after we got a few other jobs done it, we're going to be looking into the problem here in the next couple weeks. Sure hope that it's not in the gear box...replacement parts are ridiculously expensive for it!

  • @Graveltrucking
    @Graveltrucking 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The front axle is a little loose looks like it needs wheel bearings, new king pin bushings, new center pivot bushings. I guess you can expect it being the tractor is 66 years old really surprised it starts so easy with no smoke was the engine rebuilt at one time. The engine doesn't match the same wear as the rest of the tractor.

    • @yourbeekeeper
      @yourbeekeeper  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Graveltrucking I got no info from the P.O. that the engine was rebuilt... but every indication is it has.

  • @lostinmyspace4910
    @lostinmyspace4910 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Outside of the brske installation, there's a pin under the front axle centerpoint that needs to be replaced every now and then. It is positioned front to back, not side to side. When it wears out, thefan on the waterpump drops a little, then it starts to rub on the radiator shroud, then eventually rubs on the radiator. That pin needs to be replaced, and I have no clue how to do this. An old man told me it's in the I and T manual but have hopes someone knows what I'm talking about because I don't.

  • @jeffreyplum5259

    Folks, It seems YBK is removing play from the major parts first. Then he will get to the wheel bearing and err... Brakes? May need to install a few Zerks as well. The only grease this poor dear saw was the Movie. He may be able to drive it up to the ranch, when he is done. It might even become street legal. With modern lubes, it will be in tractor heaven.

  • @Nortekj
    @Nortekj 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I knew the center Pivot bushing was going to be bad, but didn't expect it to be as bad as it showe on the video, never seen one worn that badly before. Make sure you check the front axle hole where the bushing goes into, I am afraid it is going to be worn out of round. That particuar bushing is a common problem with tractors that has that type of pivoting axle. You also have a wheel bearing problem, the Left wheel beainbg nut is eiher loose or never properly tightened by whoever had it apart before you aquired the tractor also you may want to check the ajusting screw for the Worm and Sector gears ( and one each side) of steerng box and also ALL tie rod ends for excessive play. Replace King Pinsand Bushings o each side. Check the bushing on steering box where shaft exits going to drag link to steering arms on front wheels to see if there is play there too, may have to replace the bushings for those too if all play is to be removed from steering wheel which will prevent the shimmying when traveling down the road at speeds more than 20 mph, The Steering box uses EP 80 or EP 90 oil.Once all those are inspected an or replaced the tractor will steer as good as new.Also want to add that on someof the new pivot pins and bushings the grease fitting will be o the pin itself instead of in a recess on the under side of axle at pivot point.
