Awesome video series! I was just given a 1948 8N by a cousin who was downsizing his collection. This video in particular helps me understand my steering gearbox problems. From a tractor that wouldn't run, wouldn't roll, and wouldn't steer a bit without jacking the front off the ground and muscling the wheels to the desired position to move into the shop, to three weeks later, it now starts, runs well, and everything seems to work. I have rewired everything to include the 12 V conversion and one wire alternator. I am currently doing a drain and flush of the tranny / rear diff / hydraulics. After removing the sector shafts and literally grinding the grimy, corroded gears back into shape, flushing the grease out, and reassembling it, I can now 'muscle steer' it around the property. I'm watching for an affordable replacement gearbox for it so any leads would be appreciated. Thank you again for the great video series and that old girl is looking really nice, eight videos into your series.

Thank you. I'm hoping to get back at it soon. I always get stalled at the body work.

My dad’s steering will turn just one way and when turned the other way the shaft screws out. Thanks for posting this. At least I know what it looks like in there

Boring stuff like this needs a little levity.

@ClaremontClassicGarage I wouldn't call Ford 8n stuff boring, but yes, sir , the levity is great.
      I have 2 myself

Where can I sign up for your tractor rebuild class!! You sir are a master. My 8N steering has a loader and I’m sure nothing has been lubed, repaired or maintained…. EXCELLENT SERIES.

Is there a gearbox from a later make that can retrofit in? I have heard of a power steering upgrade but not sure if its a newer box or an external hydraulic assist.

The steering box from the 50-1/2 to 52 8n is a better unit and you can still buy them new. BUT, you need the matching 50-52 dash to match it. Check out Jackson Power Steering.
