In the 80s, my mother told me her everyday look was a thick, purple winged liner with a peach color in the crease, electric blue mascara, a really bronzy blush, sometimes she would draw in a beauty mark, and a frosty peach lipstick with hot pink gloss in the center. She also mixed her foundation with moisturizer.
I swear, in the early 2000's, I used to go to the bakery every Saturday. The head baker was almost always at the counter on Saturdays, and she looked EXACTLY like this. The hair, clothes, makeup, and all. She was in her 40's and she usually had blue and pink eyeshadow EVERYWHERE. She was 80's incarnate, despite what people said about her look, or the rapidly evolving fashion industry. She's pretty much what inspired me to be more individual in my makeup looks.
This was more of a late 80's/youth/party look popularized by Madonna. I would love to see a more natural "babe" look such as Heather Locklear or Brooke Shields.
This was good, but being an old eighties girl myself one critique. You chose the Madonna look, which wasn't popular among everyday looks. Lighter eye shadow with dark blue or black eyeliner was however. Enjoyed it though!
Yes, and we also wore smokey brown eyeshadow too. Zabrena is going after the magazine/video look in my opinion. Pink eye shadow was one of those colors that did not look good if applied too heavily and not blended well. It was better as an accent color in my opinion.
@V Lightning I doubt this is supposed to represent every day makeup. When people think of time periods they look to who was popular and what they were wearing; this look was commonly worn in pop culture.
Primers? Matte makeup? Foundations that resemble skin? Lip glasses? Pore minimizers? Quality sponges & brushes? Kiss proof lipstick? Airbrushed makeup? Serums? Hairspray that doesn't give you helmet hair? Nail polish that isn't super thick? Uh, like no way! Our makeup quality was abhorrent-chalky-greasy-cakey-pore-clogging crap! But we rocked it the best ways we could. Thank God for cool music, John Hughes, the Cosby Show & valley girl lingo to help get us through. Thanks so much for the flashback... Its an amazing reminder just how far cosmetics have come since then. New subbie
+Moxy O'Onyx My mom got hooked with a Mary Kay consultant back then and I swear she bought absolutely every piece of crap they sold.... and make up had such a horrendous smell. You made me remember. Now it doesnt have that smell
I remember eye liners that sucked. you had to heat them up w a lighter first. I dropped hot liner on my leg once and that burn mark is still there. Anyone remember that one cream shadow that came in a tube? I think Maybelline made it. I had a green one. Thick green cream shadow right on my lids. lol
Speaking as someone who was a teenager in the 80s, some of this you got right, and some of it eh... In the 80s, eyeshadow trios became extremely popular. You'd put the medium color on your lid, the darkest on your crease, and the lightest all the way up to your brow bone. That was the most common application. We still do similar to that now, but back then we didn't really blend. Also, blush usually came as a duo. The lighter color was on your cheekbones, with the darker color underneath in the hollow - sort of like contouring is done now. And it was very angular, as you said... Blue eyeliner became popular because the thought was it made the whites of your eyes look whiter, and therefore your eyes brighter. Eyeliner was both worn under the eye and on the lower waterline. Most girls did not line the top lid. And if you wore blue liner, it was almost always with blue mascara. :-)
Damn I just thought when watching these. Just think in 10-20 years time if anyone makes videos of makeup history and they do the 2010's... "This make up era was heavily inspired by the Kardashians".... Oh Lord. ahah anyway I love these!
OK, as a teen that lived in HS through the 80s let me offer my historical perspective. I graduated in June of 87. While we looked at all the fashion magazines with the circus colors on the eyes, most of us knew that we couldn't accomplish that ridiculous artistry with the little triangular sponges that came in the drugstore brands of Cover Girl eyeshadow. Yes, we tried on occasion, but most of us ended up with the neutrals and the "raccoon rings" of eyeliner around the eyes. You nailed the "non blend" of that circus-frosty colored look, but most of us just followed the instructions on our Maybelline eyeshadow inserts. ;) Also , there was no eye primer at Walgreens, we simply put liquid foundation on our whole face, including our eyelids. The 80s were very different in the early years as opposed to 1989. Your "off the shoulder" sweater style, hair and makeup was definitely 1985-86, my junior year. My signature makeup look was wearing gold frost lipstick to de-accentuate my very thin lips and a brown or purple eyeshadow pallette to make my green eyes pop. It's very similar to what I wear today, but in a different, less sophisticated way.
That is exactly what I remember. I used dusky purples and browns. And about 15 lbs of mascara. There was NO WAY my parents were going to let me out of the house with my bra strap showing, let alone with a makeup look a la Culture Club.
I remember the 80s, and during that time, I was into hot pink. *Everything* had to be hot pink, from my eyes shadow (mixed with blues and purples), my lips were hot pink, my cheeks were hot pink, and even my shoelaces were hot pink (while my shoe itself was lime-green). Ah, the 80s; such a relaxed time when we didn't give a care about what society thought about us.
+Jude Ku Ahh yes your right ! I read what you said and it all came flooding back ! I had peach shirts jumpers skirts and peach eye shadow peach blusher and peach shoes !
+Jude Ku Oh good Lord, was your's as voluminous as mine was? ...HUGE skirt and even BIGGER sleeves! Looking back, I looked like I'd fallen straight out of James And The Giant Peach, lol!
LOL Mahta! Mine wasn't so much puffy as it was long. It was so long, I tripped over about ten times in the space of an hour! The colour, though, was almost a pastel neon peach. You know, the sort of pastel neon that now comes as nail polish. While it might look gorgeous on the nails, it does not look good on lace!
I found a makeup book in my friends garage. I still have it. It has a lot of really cool, classy kind of looks from the 80s. It has everything from skin care, to eyeshadow, to how to apply blush according to your face shape. I know the bright neon colors are more fun to do but I wish someone would do a tutorial based on the more average everyday looks of that time. I like how light and blended their makeup always looks and I can never seem to replicate it.
***** Yes, this look is more like the "glam rock" look of the late 80's (or to some extent the punk look that some were still wearing in the early 80's, albeit a very small group of people). I graduated in '88 and the average person was not wearing makeup like this for the majority of the '80s. Granted, the hair was big through most of the decade. Shadow colors especially though were much more natural. Everybody did black liner, not colored. The colored mascaras were much more popular than brightly colored shadows. The blush placement in the video is about right, but again much more natural colors were used. The lipstick color is pretty similar to like what my Mom wore back then, but teens and young adults were again wearing more natural hues or just barely pink lip gloss. Also, I remember people tanning themselves like crazy in the 80's and wearing *darker* foundations, not lighter. By the time the early to mid 90's were rolling around, people were saying we would never see anything but natural eye shadow colors ever again. The cliche blue and white frost shadow duos were long gone by then.
There were multiple social crowds during the 80's and she did the makeup for most women who were in the "pop" crowd, hence the "Madonna" bow in her hair, etc. I was in the Headbanger/ Metal crowd and they still had the big hair but their makeup was a little more conservative (Less eyeshadow, more eyeliner) and not borderline circus. Great video and spot on for the women who were in the pop social circle.
Oh my goodness...this SO brought me back to the time when my school's girl's bathroom smelled of Aquanet hairspray! And yes, I did sport teased bangs that reached the ceiling and black eyeliner only on the lower rims + cherry red Wet N' Wild lipstick back in the day :D Thanks for the throwback, ***** :)
I am sooooo glad I came across this video - my sister in law is holding a 1980's themed birthday party next month and this has helped me immensely! thank you! :)
This takes me back to my childhood. Bright colors (lots of neon), big jewelry, Aquanet hairspray and "radar dish" bangs... Wow. I honestly don't miss the fashion/makeup trends from then, but the 80s had the BEST music and movies.
Honestly the best 80s makeup tutorial I've seen. You look like you've been zapped straight out of 1986. It feels like I'm watching this on an VHS tape. Fantastic vid!
Well, you know there were a lot of different styles in the ‘80’s. I, for instance, used very pale foundation and rice powder from Chinatown, black eyeliner and mascara and with smokey blue or purple eyeshadow. Absolutely No Blush, and a nice matte lipstick from Coty that was kind of a dusty rose reddish mauve color. As for hair, I used Aquanet hairspray to absolutely glue my hair down (not up) Also, my hair was dyed blue black. Cellophane hair color was popular, it was an amazing hair color that changed with the light. This was Los Angeles in the 1980’s. I can’t speak for Kansas or New Jersey...
you should try doing ancient egyptian makeup on the queens and princesses. they seemed to know what they were doing way back when. would be interesting to see how, esp with what little inspiration they had (i dont think other countries relied as heavily on makeup as the ancient egyptians)
That was, like, TOTALLY AWESOME! I WAS A TEENAGER IN THE '80'S. Imagine having to unlearn all that when I got older! lol! Loved this stroll down memory lane. Thanks!
I think I just unlearned it last year. And I’m almost 52. I didn’t even know you were supposed to tweeze your eyebrows until relatively recently. I blame Brooke for that one lol 😂
Just turned 49. I've been watching brow videos it total fear... But honestly, I was a "Metal Kid" (Motley Crue, Ozzy, Dio with a little bit of Prince & Madonna thrown in), so I really didn't wear my make-up like this tutorial. I think what I wore was closer to the 90's grunge look video. Lots of black eyeliner (Red Maybelline pencils in black we used to melt with a lighter for darker application) applied around the and to the top and bottom waterlines & black mascara. Also, one thing this video misses, is that all we had were the crappy sponge tip applicators that came with the eye-shadows. There were no "make up brushes". It was your fingers for concealer/foundation, the tiny blush brushes that came with the blushes & the "puffs" that came in the powder compacts. And you never washed them - no one knew you were supposed to until someone got an eye infection. Anyway, nostalgia....
I was 17 in 1989 and your description of the attitude of the 80s is spot on. I am so excited to get dressed up and take a walk down memory lane. Thanks for this video!
This is such a great tutorial. Awesome job! The 80s were really bold and out there with different arrays of bright and fun colors like pink, purple, teal and blue. I've always liked how you do extensive research and gather as much information as you can to achieve the authenticity of the decades and create looks that were as close to the makeup worn in these decades as possible. It would be so stellar if you could do the 1950s, 1970s, and (my FAVORITE decade) the 1990s!
Hi Terri Ann! Thank you for the enormous compliments! :D I appreciate that! I did just post 90s Grunge the other day but am definitely planning on a separate 90s tutorial with brown lips and all! ;) xoxo!
I remember my makeup back then. I used purple a lot but every girl I knew had mat foundation. Lots of shimmer and frost on the eyes, cheeks and lips but mat powdered face. The primer I used on my face was white, then very light foundation. Lucky for me I am a pale no sun kinda girl. Nice tutorial.
Ha! I used to think back to the 80s (when I grew up) as an embarrassing decade. We wore all things ridiculous, make up, hair and clothing. The higher the hair, the better, and rat, rat, rat it. Looking back the 80s was a great decade -- serious dancing and music, giant hair and more makeup than any human should ever wear. Most people didn't wear quite that much pink eye shadow unless they were famous or bold, but bright pink lipstick and blush, yes. Blue eye shadow was just as huge as pink. Most of us put on makeup like Madonna/Brook Shields rather than Cindy Lauper. Great tutorial, however. When you dress, throw on some parachute pants, paisley, bermuda shorts, penny loafers, peg your pants, wear floods, spiral perms...Clinique makeup reigned supreme in the 80s as well. So many fun things in the 80s.
+Kris M Your so right!! I wore paisley everything and we copied all things Madonna!! As a matter of fact I don't think I've put cover up or powder on my face since High School. And the hair was so stiff with Aqua net that it didn't move. What a fun time for make up.
+Kris M yeah I was born in the last years of the 80's and I also recall them as that. I remember grabbing my mom's old clothes when it was already the 90's and I was like why did she wear this!!!!???????? all her tops had shoulder pads. every one of them. ranging from shirts, to t-shirts, to cardigans, to blazers.... everything!!!!! I also remember pleated pants. oh lord a crime against women
+haruno21 The guy who came up with pleated pants must have hated women! Everyone, every SKINNY woman, who wore them, looked fat with a paunch!! It WAS a crime!!
Oh yeah, my mom wore shoulder pads well into the late 90s lol. And my Aunt Carol wore heavy handed electric blue eye shadow til the day she died. I also remember my older sister in the early nineties with super teased bangs. Thank god I was too young to buy into those trends.
I loved how simple makeup was then. No primers, no contour powders we just used blush to contour. Not much foundation just enough for that glow on as you mentioned. Hot pink and electric blues YES! IT was everything. They had clear mascara and a Maybelline 3 in one makeup stick I used for concealer, contouring my cheek, then a darker blush just under the cheek bone and light on the nose. LOL I must of worn electric blue on the outer lid and pink on the inner and a powder pink brow bone with blue eyeliner forever!! My sister and mother hated it but I loved it. LOL
You nail it!!! Brought back memories. I was late 70's early 80's. I shared the 60's video with my mom tonight. It was neat talking about what she did with makeup in her generation and what I did in mine and how some trends come back with a tweak here and there. I love your videos and please keep doing them. Nice to see something different on TH-cam about makeup.
This really brought back memories! I started doing my makeup in the 80's and yes, you took the bright colors all the way up to the brows and sometimes beyond.
I was in high school in the early 80"s. Heavy mascara, light blue eyeliner in the waterline, heavy blush, lotsa lip gloss, cotton candy gloss was the "winner" and lots and lots of compact powder. Why oh why did we think this was great??? LOL! Still love clear lip gloss.
Ha ha. So fun. I was a teenager in the 80's. This was so fun to watch. Wanna see outrageous? See old KNOTS LANDING clips with Donna MIlls. Her make-up was CRAZY electric blue. It's true. We were WAYYYYYY OTT.
As someone who grew up in the 80's, I hate to say it, but, a couple of things in this video aren't exactly right. But, you did get most of it right. I like this series
The eye color of the era was PURPLE in every shade you could find. Frosty browbone highlighter, colored mascara, and strong blush, too. You nailed the hair, back then I'd have killed for hair like yours! Don't forget a BIG pair of earrings, no dainty stuff!
i was a teenager in the 80's we would wear thick blue eyeliner pink and blue eyeshadow with bright blue mascara and pink lipstick and of course the mullet was the style then in hair. we also wore yellow illuminated back v necked bubbled tops 3/4 length white pants and winkle picker shoes. such funnn
I would LOVE to find out more about makeup of the 1700s, like what the French Court was doing with their painted white doll-like faces, Marie Antoinette, that whole thing!
Taka Ono Me, too!! I love reading about life and fashion at the Court of Versailles, especially Marie Antoinette and Madame de Pompadour!! It would be a real treat to see what your interpretation of French fashion at Versailles would be
electric blue eye liner all around on water line top and bottom. Brooke Shields eyebrows! I absolutely miss my 80s makeup and big hair! I'll always be an 80s girl at heart :)
I was born in 1981 and I remember my mom having a spiral perm with lots of mouse. Chiseled looking blush and very frosty lips. Btw you look like Jem's alter ego Jerrica in this look. I love it!
Not only did I go through my teen years in the 80's. But I grew up in New Jersey, BIG HAIR with lots of hairspray was the name of the game. Remember some girls would put concealer all over their lips. That I didn't do, could never understand that one.
Can I just say we had the most comfortable clothes in the 80's!! The oversized shirts and the stirrup pants with black patent flats!! You could experiment and no one thought you looked crazy!! Yes I cringe at some of the pictures now (especially the hair) but it was an awesome decade!!
The 80's are my favorite era! It was such a creative time, my favorite thing about 80's makeup is the blush though, I have really angular/prominent cheek bones, so I rock the 80's blush look all the way up to my temples every day.
I really enjoy your historically accurate decades makeup videos! You look great in every era you've done. I hope you continue. Like many others who have posted, I'd love to see videos for the 2000s, 1990s, 1970s...1950s? Would you consider making a playlist of all your decades makeup videos?
From what I remember of the 90's: grunge - smudgey, glossy black eye and super pale skin, plucked eyebrows, Clinique Black Honey lips, Chanel Vamp nails, PX Voodoo stick blush. Or the Bobbi Brown/Ultima II nudes (ala Kevyn Aucoin), very contoured face, precise matte nude eyeshadows, brown lipstick, strong Cindy Crawford brows, sheer, invisible foundation.
This is how I like to do my makeup, anyway. I've always loved bright colours. I don't go as heavy with the blush and I'm not huge on frosted lipsticks, but I love bright colours for my eyes, lips, and cheeks.
when I was a kid in the 90s, from my Barbie dolls to cartoons and other daytime shows (like 21 Jumpstreet), I thought that THIS was the way to do makeup and assumed that when I grew up women would still do their makeup this way, not realizing that fashion changes. So, you can say I was a little disappointed, but glad I'm in my 20s and can do whatever I want with my face still! Love this tutorial! I would love to see other historically accurate 80s looks as well!
I think Boy George had the BEST 80s makeup. He was popular when I was about 7, and I couldn't wait to become a teenager so that I could wear makeup like him. haha
Wow, total blast from the past! ;-D Reminds me of my older cousins with their frosted lips and rainbow eyeshadow - oh, and you can't forget the big permed hair ;-D
Call me crazy, but I love a super frosty lip! Milani pink frost is one of my faves!!! You did a GREAT job as usual!I love the thought and research that you put into these historically accurate looks! Do the 90's next please!!! It doesn't seem like the 90's were that long ago, but makeup has definitely changed since then! Thank you, already looking forward to your next video!
The lip gloss had to be vinyl like shiny and thick. Think of your face as a disco ball. It needed to shine and glow. LOL. I was in my 20's through out the 1980's and I can tell you, it was a great time. Great music, clothes were getting better and no one cared about what you drank/ate/smoked.
I remember the blue eyeliner and eyeshadow. And pink. For a time I did half my lid blue and half pink. Yeesh. And I probably had a sweater just like that. This was fun to watch :)
Authentically, I was there! Make-up then was really matchy-matchy. Pinks, Purples, and Aqua! You really played up the eyes and glossed the lips with glitter. You use spray in hair color and spray glitter! It was a glittering era! Big curly hair tied back with lace ribbon, funky earrings, bangle bracelets and black skinny heel pumps worn with lace top anklets! Your boyfriends jean jacket and pencil skirt. It was the era of sexy rebel girls. Loved all the positives back then.
Let's take a minute and remember how great the 80s were....bold streaks of blush, dark lips, bow heads, baggy jeans. Good times! I wasn't a big blue eyeshadow girl, but I had the most perfect taupe from Clinique and I ran that stuff right up to my brow. Totally gnarly!
This is my favorite look out of your historical looks series (and I just binged them all in 2 days lol). It's so pretty! I wanna use it for a theme party now lol.
I was a teenager in the 80s and I WANTED the look you did but we couldn't get the colours and I had to go to Carnaby Street London to get yellow(or black) nail varnish. If a friend was going to London we would ask them to get it for us. I usually wore bright pink, purple or orange eyeshadow and very pale frosted pink lipstick (by Rimmel). I did try the electric blue mascara but it didn't show up much on my dark lashes and it was way more clumpy than the black one for some reason. Regarding matte v glowy skin: we didn't really think of the finish back then because we didn't have different finishes to choose from. It just ended up being whatever it turned out so I would go for natural or dewy for an authentic look. Back then you just tried to match the colour. I say "tried" to match because it usually ended up looking orange (although pale was desirable). So if you want your 80s look to be really authentic, get orangey foundation lol ;-) Angular blusher DEFINITELY MUCH. We got in so much trouble at school due to the conflict between "looking cool" and what the teacher considered an acceptable level of make up as well lol.
I love your Historically Accurate series! They're just way more informative than other people's. But one thing I'm curious about is with the 80s, often times I see the real colorful makeup, like this, but I'm really curious about a different type of 80s look I've seen in movies, old TV shows, ads, etc. It wasn't the real super bright colorful. I'm not totally sure, but I think what I'm thinking of is maybe more towards the early 80s? I don't really know how to describe it, but it was a more softer & neutral look, I mean, not really but compared to the colorful looks. I guess since I don't know the exact terms or whatever, have you ever seen the movie 'Staying Alive'? Basically how Finola Huges & Cynthia Rhodes characters wore their makeup that's a pretty good visual of what I'm trying to describe. LOL I don't mean like, their stage makeup towards the end of the movie, I just mean how they had their regular makeup for most of the movie besides that part.
First, Staying Alive is my all-time fave movie! I know exactly the style you're referring to. A cleaner, "classier" look, but still with a decent amount of eyeliner and blush. LOVE IT!
Just discovered this series and had to watch all of it! Such a great idea, I love the little glimpse into history you always do, it's so informative. I wouldn't mind if you'd even go a bit deeper with them, maybe explaining the historical and social context a little more. And the looks are sooo beautiful as well. I'd love to see the 20th century completed, especially the 90s. Also, you always do these matching hairstyles. Can you include them into the tutorial? I think they're very interesting too.
Good times :) I can remember wearing alternating stripes of bright blue and purple ... like a sunburst. Heavy black eyeliner and electric blue mascara. Neon pink lipstick. I'm too old to pull it off now, so I'm glad I was at the right age to do it back then. Great tutorial :)
Oh my goodness! I've absolutely no idea as to how I missed this when you uploaded it a fortnight ago! I was going to suggest you go back to the 1990's so I could reminisce about my childhood - but really, that'd probably be a tad redundant from what I can gather about recent trends in both fashion and makeup...
Im actually twelve, but I enjoy the 80's! I love watching Full House and I have done fishnet from my mom. Shes my motivation for learning about the 80's and so are you! 👍💜👍
These series are so much fun, I'm currently watching them all. I would absolutely love to see ALL the different styles and era's of Gothic makeup looks!!! Already subscribed. 😁 Keep it up! 👍🏻
Wow, I did this make up tonight for an 80’s themed disco! I loved it! And got complimented by a young woman who was also a make up artist! Thanks for a great tutorial.
Z! I dropped everything I was doing when I seen this pop up in my sub box! HAD to watch it! I love it! You can totally pull this look off! Well done, its beautiful! Love your hair and outfit too:) I am really missing the 80's now. I will forever be stuck in the 80's and proud of it darn it! Tonight I may have to watch Teen Witch! XO
OMG, this brings back memories... :-) I also used to sometimes draw my eyebrows with purple. I loved purple very much in the 80s, especially around my eyes. Preferably in combination with turquoise! The frosted lipstick is spot on - I just wish certain women would realize that the 80s are over and they should throw away their frosted lipsticks. Especially if they are over 40 now... My suggestion: Do the 1930s please!
I was born in '81 so I didn't get to rock the makeup and styles that my older cousins got to wear. What I did get to wear was jelly sandals, leg warmers, feathered bangs, and my favorite, pink high top Reeboks. I love your tutorial. Now that I'm grown I can rock this look for Halloween sometime lol.
haha! love it! I don't remember the shiny skin though. We ( my friends & I from NJ) used cover girl liquid foundation & powder. I think the skin came from the make up being so heavy & our teen age skin being so oily!!! I remember having to powder several times a day. what a riot! oh & I wore silver, gold, yellow, red, & black eyeshadows. I would put 3 colors in verticle stripes on my lid all the way up to the brow. aaahhh those were the days
Oy! I am glad I wasn't old enough for make-up until the 90's! Lol. For me in the late 80's I was all about Cyndi Lauper and Madonna's music for sure, but then came..... Green Day, No Doubt, etc and I was never the same........ :D Lol. Great tutorial!
My oldest daughter was born in 1989 - but still considers herself an "80's kid". As soon as I found this video - I immediately sent it to her. And by the way...her name is Sabrina!
You should try to recreate it!
sounds fucking awesome!
Knipp Udd absolutely
+sobrieze MUA she must have admired madonna back then hahaha, for the beauty mark!
I would definitely love to recreate it but my mother doesn't have any pictures of herself from the 80s for me to reference haha
Agree 100%!
Balendula Finally someone described it, like a daily look but 80s
There's a vintage TH-camr who does day/night looks of eras and she has one of the eighties
I agree this is really what you can see Madonna wearing in her lollipop sexuality era. I think this is exactly what she did for the Lucky Star video.
Boring lol
This was good, but being an old eighties girl myself one critique. You chose the Madonna look, which wasn't popular among everyday looks. Lighter eye shadow with dark blue or black eyeliner was however. Enjoyed it though!
Thank you for helping me not be the only one thinking that. I kept watching and thinking WTF?!
Yes, and we also wore smokey brown eyeshadow too. Zabrena is going after the magazine/video look in my opinion. Pink eye shadow was one of those colors that did not look good if applied too heavily and not blended well. It was better as an accent color in my opinion.
@@gigijenn225 Exactly
Yeah I didn't remember orange or pink eye shadow..I did remember Frosts and I had electric blue mascara lol 😏
New subbie
LOL! Amen!! :D Welcome to you!!
+Moxy O'Onyx My mom got hooked with a Mary Kay consultant back then and I swear she bought absolutely every piece of crap they sold.... and make up had such a horrendous smell. You made me remember. Now it doesnt have that smell
+Moxy O'Onyx I completely agree. The quality of most makeup back then absolutely sucked! Today's drugstore stuff is tons better.
YES! I'd completely forgotten about that until you mentioned it. Some of it was also powder and you had to add water, and.... ick!
Yes the blue eyeliner thing 🫣 With the long flicked fringe on short haircuts; everyone trying to look like Lady Di.
Damn I just thought when watching these. Just think in 10-20 years time if anyone makes videos of makeup history and they do the 2010's... "This make up era was heavily inspired by the Kardashians".... Oh Lord. ahah anyway I love these!
Anna101shark Id also say it was heavily inspired by the drag community
Ana Pinese I can see that! I watch all these "beauty gurus" doing these massive drag cut creases. Im glad that drag is getting more accepted. 🤗
hahahahha this one kills me! LMAO
@@Anna101shark drag cut crease? How about contour? Baking? Big light triangles on the under eyes? Huge false eyelashes? Over the top overlined lips? 😒
ALL. THE. HIGHLIGHTER.
You nailed the "non blend" of that circus-frosty colored look, but most of us just followed the instructions on our Maybelline eyeshadow inserts. ;)
Also , there was no eye primer at Walgreens, we simply put liquid foundation on our whole face, including our eyelids.
I remember putting blue eyeliner inside my water line in college (1987)
That is exactly what I remember. I used dusky purples and browns. And about 15 lbs of mascara. There was NO WAY my parents were going to let me out of the house with my bra strap showing, let alone with a makeup look a la Culture Club.
That's definitely 1980s from you described your look.
Yes… same here we used the little felt tip shadow applicator and went by the directions… and used fingers to apply makeup and heavy eyeliner
In 80's UK, peach was *the* colour to have! Clothes, makeup, accessories... Peach, peach, peach LOL
+Jude Ku Ahh yes your right ! I read what you said and it all came flooding back ! I had peach shirts jumpers skirts and peach eye shadow peach blusher and peach shoes !
I had to wear a peach bridesmaid dress at my uncle'd wedding! I still cringe to this day LOL
OOhhhh those were the days !!
Search "Donna Mills: The Eyes Have It 1984"... seems to be what you're talking about :)
Shannon O'Hare that's so cool what was the name of the book and authors name
It was called Mary Kay's Guide to Beauty. Its from 1987 I think.
Cool I'll have to look it up
***** Yes, this look is more like the "glam rock" look of the late 80's (or to some extent the punk look that some were still wearing in the early 80's, albeit a very small group of people).
I'd love to see the 1970's recreated. The disco glam style and the natural boho!
She did already. She looked like Farrah Fawcett.
You're right, there were a number of different makeup approaches, and this one was not necessarily the mainstream one.
She should totally have done a new romantic 80's look! Best look of the 80's so far!
LOL! Good ol' Aquanet! ;) Thank you for watching and sharing your 80s memories! :D
***** Oh, and Depp hair gel for the guys :))) (Lol, I'm old.)
I am sooooo glad I came across this video - my sister in law is holding a 1980's themed birthday party next month and this has helped me immensely! thank you! :)
Amaya Dokuhana YAY! Enjoy!!
Do a historically accurate 2000s look! I want to see that frosty EVERYTHING
That was our every day look. The video shows what people wore to go clubbing
you should try doing ancient egyptian makeup on the queens and princesses. they seemed to know what they were doing way back when. would be interesting to see how, esp with what little inspiration they had (i dont think other countries relied as heavily on makeup as the ancient egyptians)
Ancient Egyptian would be amazing!
That was, like, TOTALLY AWESOME! I WAS A TEENAGER IN THE '80'S. Imagine having to unlearn all that when I got older! lol! Loved this stroll down memory lane. Thanks!
I was also a teenager in the 80s! I'm still unlearning it now lol.
@@lauramau2530 I've refused to pluck mine. I clean the edges up. That's it. Mine aren't super full but, i dont get the drawn on look
I don't think the 80s was a embrassing era for fashion .If you compare it with todays fashion, fashion nowadays is kinda boring in my opinion :)
How about 80's glam metal?!
Yes!! Definitely!! :D
YES!
That would be so good!
I remember wearing a striped eye shadow on the lids (no blending!) during the 80's (pinks and purples)! Your look is spot on!
You should do one for the 2000s
you should do an early 2000's tutorial!
Love it! I had rainbow eye shadow and pink blush and lip gloss! Those were the days!
Ha ha. So fun. I was a teenager in the 80's. This was so fun to watch. Wanna see outrageous? See old KNOTS LANDING clips with Donna MIlls. Her make-up was CRAZY electric blue. It's true. We were WAYYYYYY OTT.
I remember her 😂
I love your bright yellow nails!
It would be a real treat to see what your interpretation of French fashion at Versailles would be
your tutorials are flat out brilliant, well researched, highly interesting and a reflection of those eras looks.
You should definitely try the 70's and ancient Egypt, maybe the 1700's. Love the series.
electric blue eye liner all around on water line top and bottom.
I love it!
I was a teenager in.the.80's . this tutorial is spot on. exactly. how I use to do.it!! brings back memories x
Not only did I go through my teen years in the 80's. But I grew up in New Jersey, BIG HAIR with lots of hairspray was the name of the game. Remember some girls would put concealer all over their lips. That I didn't do, could never understand that one.
Me too- i'm an 80's jersey girl! Did you ever try to make your own lip gloss by crushing blush or eyeshadow into a glop of vasaline? good times. lol
+MP light no but I would customize my own nail polish, still do!
+MP light yes, yes, yes!!
Flashback! You did well, blue mascara as well as the eye liner, and the lip gloss back then was roll-on and super sticky and thick!
+Luna Stargoddess I hated the sticky lip glosses of the 1980's.
+Debra Duffy it was nasty wasn't it and gluggy!
This is how I like to do my makeup, anyway. I've always loved bright colours. I don't go as heavy with the blush and I'm not huge on frosted lipsticks, but I love bright colours for my eyes, lips, and cheeks.
Wow, that was TOTALLY tubular and RAD
Only people in California said that. No one in the rest of the world did.
when I was a kid in the 90s, from my Barbie dolls to cartoons and other daytime shows (like 21 Jumpstreet), I thought that THIS was the way to do makeup and assumed that when I grew up women would still do their makeup this way, not realizing that fashion changes.
Yes Yes Yes 80's wish I could of been alive during this time
Call me crazy, but I love a super frosty lip! Milani pink frost is one of my faves!!! You did a GREAT job as usual!I love the thought and research that you put into these historically accurate looks! Do the 90's next please!!! It doesn't seem like the 90's were that long ago, but makeup has definitely changed since then! Thank you, already looking forward to your next video!
do an 80´s post-punk Siouxie Sioux look!
That's what I was thinking too !
That frosty pink lipstick is perfect!
1990's is all the craze right now! Would love to see your take on Britney's and Christina's makeup looks!
I miss the 80s so much. I remember using heavy black or green eyeliner and lots of purple eyeshadow. You recreated the look perfectly Zabrina!
I love how you laughed when you saw what the blush looked like.
Will you PLEASE do an early 2000s makeup look!?
Let's take a minute and remember how great the 80s were....bold streaks of blush, dark lips, bow heads, baggy jeans. Good times! I wasn't a big blue eyeshadow girl, but I had the most perfect taupe from Clinique and I ran that stuff right up to my brow. Totally gnarly!
This is my favorite look out of your historical looks series (and I just binged them all in 2 days lol). It's so pretty! I wanna use it for a theme party now lol.
Ahhh, I remember my teal eyeliner and teal mascara well! I'm also redheaded with blonde eyelashes, so that teal mascara REALLY showed up on me!
Brought back memories of learning how to apply make up, I was 10 years old in 1982, so my formative teen years were the 80's.
i love this talented woman!
this is one of my fave makeup tutorials ever!! ive rewatched this about 10 times now lol, great job!! id love to see another 1980s look from you!!
I actually love the eyeshadow!
LOVE IT!
I'm thinking of the neutral 80s look too, like in the movie "Heathers", although that came out in '88.
this is my favorite so far! I'd never want us to go back to that kind of makeup application... but it's fun for dress up parties and halloween!
I think they're very interesting too.
eyeshadow were so colourful
Ooh the good old days!Loved the styles during this time and of course, the music and makeup lol
Yaaaas!!!
I'm 14 and I love full house!!
This video was sooo helpful to me. I used it as a guide for my own 80's makeup for an 80's party. Thanks so much! It was a big hit!!!
You rocked the look! Not just the make up but the hair, asymmetrical sweater and the big bow! Look this tutorial!...class of 1986!
Would LOVE to see a 90s era! My favorite time period!
You achieved every angle of the 80s makeup era great job! ❤️
XO
Right?!!? Totally!! One of the things I LOVE about you! 80s rulez!! I want to have an 80s teen movies marathon now myself! :) XOXO! Luv u!
***** Thank you for totally like making my week Z, you are soooo rad! ;)
OMG, this brings back memories... :-)
I also used to sometimes draw my eyebrows with purple.
You're the best! This reminds me of watching my sister getting ready when I was a kid. Loved this.
This makes you look so much like my older sister's best friend in the 80's.
haha!
The eyeshadow actually looks really good!
Looks SO much fun! My mother in the 1980s followed that make-up trend to the T! I'd love to try this out for fun sometime :D
She is! :) How awesome! Thanks for sharing with her! (Our names are close! Mine is spelt a little differently: 'Zabrena' - thanks to a unique Dad!) ;)
I was born that year and I still think I'm an 80's kid, but I cross over to the 90's too :p best of both world haha
