I feel sorry for as you went just for the delay "trick" and not for the mentality, psychology, logic and reasoning behind it. Everything he said before digging into the "trick", was quite valuable. I agree it should've been covered in a short and sweet manner, so that people don't get bored, but give it a chance! :)
I've been doing sound with an analogue board for a number of years at a church . I've been guessing at how to get reverb to sound good and failing. They recently purchased a digital mixer and it has Reverb and Delay built in. Along with the mixer came a whole lot of clueless. TH-cam has helped me tremendously. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this video on Delay. I've downloaded the sheet and will be looking at it shortly. Thank you so very much.
This is one of the best vocal tutorials I have seen on TH-cam. This might be an old trick, but so what? New mixers don't know old tricks now do they? That's the point of these kind of videos, to help those that do not know the old tricks yet. Keep up the great work.
Hey just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make these videos. They are really really good and I'll be keeping an eye on all of your videos. super helpful. thanks again.
OMG !! I wish i had found this years ago. Everything makes so much sense after this. It used to drive me nuts when vocals or Solos sounded so far away and i had no clue how to get that right.
A huge thank you!!!......I am working on my second album... They were only made possible by watching your tutorials...I'm still learning, but thanks to you I'm getting more proficient in my recording efforts!!!...keep up the excellent work!!!!
One good way to find the correct timing on the TRACK is to grab a calculator and Type: 60 Divided by BPM of the track and that gives you 1/4 ( Quarter Note ) of 4/4 ( Whole Note ) . so thats the decimal traduced on Milliseconds.
I was having nightmares trying to mix vocals from a live studio performance of my band. It's being hard, but so educational, because it forced me to study techniques that were not in my arsenal so far. Dynamic EQ and this delay trick totally changed the game for me.
Wow what a bunch of rude imbeciles to someone who has gone out of his way to teach something valuable! As a complete beginner I find your in depth tutorials EXTREMELY helpful so THANK YOU! To the twats complaining about how long it takes for him to get to the point: welcome to TH-cam, I'll be your tour guide - drag the dot and fast forward.
thx a lot , now i see that the slap delay in the h-delay from waves can help the vocal a lot .. always searched for something like this...im always turning some room and a gated reverb in by taste , depends on the song ..but this makes it more alive :) thx
This à great tutorial, thank you muchly. I wanted to compliment your comment about the slap back sounding close to reverb. The theory is that humans generally can't differentiate a slap back faster than 50ms, hence delays start from roughly 50ms onwards and reverb tend to be faster than that. It's the main differentiating point between the two. Obviously this is a rule of thumb and I'm sure they cross overs. Thanks again for this!
Been using this trick for years. Back in the old analog days, I used to run a stereo delay send from the Vox to the Return of a stereo bus. totally widens and gives a larger image.
Thank you for your time and effort in producing and sharing this! Very helpful. I’m going to give this method a try on a mix of my own right now. Cheers!
I love the sound of slap back! My forays into understanding delay timing on vocals were like entering a strange dimension, very rough going. Not so here, this is a great explanation of how to achieve this sound.
I've had the idea of using delay on my backing vocals while I was taking a shower. Then I came on youtube to see if that makes sence hahaha great video. Thanks.
wow this definitely what i missing to push my vocals forward, i just got the hang of reverb and i noticed like you pointed out, it pushes it backwards. thank for sharing this
I see people complaining about the long intro, and I see where you're coming from, but I ended up having more info from like one sentence during the intro than the whole technical part. Technicalities develop and change and even get fucked with and misinterpreted, but key concepts are the core of this whole thing.
pretty cool video, I have keep having t come back to it, to pick up on some little thing that your doing in the mix, but every time I pick up on something that I can use. not just with vocals but so that I don't use to much reverb on my guitars and other instruments. thank you for this video again.
Great video once you got into actual examples. I didn't realize what a huge difference delay makes. I'm definitely going to be using it more in my future songs.
Thanks so much, I compose and record acoustic based "americana style" music. I hate having to use compression because it's so hard to hear the subtle differences. This was very helpful.
A very nice example of well used technique, in context - well explained, unless you can't focus for more than 10 seconds. In which case mixing is definitely not the best career choice. Thanks. Of course as an old guy I can say: Before all this we just used to record vocals in the bathroom. Instant tile slapback! :D
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!! Please keep them coming :) The comments are extremely rude! Here is this guy, taking his time and actually explaining everything so super clearly and then there's ungrateful idiots who say "it takes too long". By all means, if you're all so awesome, what are you doing here??? Some of us actually enjoy this thorough learning experience.
Nice demonstration. Please ignore those impatient commenters with 5 second attention span; they are either just impatient kinds that haven't really learned how to use fast forward an time control on the video, OR geniuses who are going to accomplish soo much stuff in life that I don't know why they waste any seconds on watching yt videos.
Subtlety is the key in most instances and you did it well. That little touch of reverb did indeed suite the nature of the track. I like your approach.
Tutorial starts at 4 min 23 sec
i read this 4min and 25sec too late.
Thank you , cos that info was annoying
Some heroes don't wear capes.
4:23 mmm click this

WAY better with the delay, awesome trick, heading to the studio now to try this out, I've always been pretty ignorant of delay, this is super helpful.
OMG !! I wish i had found this years ago. Everything makes so much sense after this.
It used to drive me nuts when vocals or Solos sounded so far away and i had no clue how to get that right.
Very instructive for people that want to learn about reverbs. Thanks for posting ! Just subscribed. TPOY
A huge thank you!!!......I am working on my second album... They were only made possible by watching your tutorials...I'm still learning, but thanks to you I'm getting more proficient in my recording efforts!!!...keep up the excellent work!!!!
Thank you so much this is exactly how I want my vocals to sound and I use Logic Pro x as my daw so this is perfect. Thanks again.
This is great! The explanation at the beginning is good background for those of us a bit newer to the whole concept :)
Glad we could help!

Awesome!
Juan Palacio doesn’t the h delay from waves let you put the bpm directly without doing that??
This video really helped me a lot. i have been struggling with reverb and delay on my vocals and this really was helpful. Thank You
Glad we could help!
Excellent and precise tips. Reverb and delays are way more tricky and subtle than it seems when you're a beginner.
On with it already.
I was having nightmares trying to mix vocals from a live studio performance of my band. It's being hard, but so educational, because it forced me to study techniques that were not in my arsenal so far. Dynamic EQ and this delay trick totally changed the game for me.

Saying rude things to those that are rude doesn't help. Just could have just said "you guys can drag the dot instead of being rude." 😋
Amen Thank you for this comment
Seriously though, this dude must love the sound of his own voice...
That was informative. Thank you
thx a lot , now i see that the slap delay in the h-delay from waves can help the vocal a lot .. always searched for something like this...im always turning some room and a gated reverb in by taste , depends on the song ..but this makes it more alive :) thx
Very helpful stuff!
Delay is awesome....Time based processing can make or break a mix. Thanks so much!!
Yeah, it’s a useful tool. I first became aware of it through George Martin and his manual work with The Beatles.
Tried and true!
This great advice, I am sure I can apply this in a live scenario via my HD pod 500. Thanks for sharing you have just helped me solve a vocal dilemma.

I wish you could do a tutorial on how you process your vocals. These vocals sound really great.
be sure to check out our other videos on vocals! th-cam.com/video/TIDfOKrpNrE/w-d-xo.html
I loved the loop track, perfect lyrics for it.
Great video.
Simply explained and very helpful.
Many thanks sir.
Happy to help!
This totally worked for my vocal! Wish I knew this technique 18 years ago. Reverb pushes my vocal too far back in the mix
dont use insert rvb, use send and return.
Thanks for that. Appreciate your time to do this.
Thank you, thank you , thank you! You just took the fear out of stereo delay for me.
Really helpful. You are a very very good teacher. And I’m glad to use the stock plug-in from logic. So easy to follow. Good luck out there
Been using this trick for years. Back in the old analog days, I used to run a stereo delay send from the Vox to the Return of a stereo bus. totally widens and gives a larger image.
Awesome!
I would love to work with you. Or even get pointers Chuck. I'm a hip hop artists with many artists under me. I'd love to show you some of what I do.
This is a great technique, instant results is right. Fantastic video, thanks!
Thank you for your time and effort in producing and sharing this! Very helpful. I’m going to give this method a try on a mix of my own right now. Cheers!
Hi Rob. Great tutorial. At 6:12, how do you move an AUX track around in the mixer?
Love this one
Glad you enjoyed!
I love the sound of slap back! My forays into understanding delay timing on vocals were like entering a strange dimension, very rough going. Not so here, this is a great explanation of how to achieve this sound.
This guy is exactly right....
Glad we could help!
I've had the idea of using delay on my backing vocals while I was taking a shower. Then I came on youtube to see if that makes sence hahaha great video. Thanks.
Hi rob! Thanks for all the time you put into these videos! Every single one of your videos help me and leave me with something to chew on. Thanks✌️
Happy to help!
Great video. And thanks for the tips
wow this definitely what i missing to push my vocals forward, i just got the hang of reverb and i noticed like you pointed out, it pushes it backwards.
thank for sharing this
Thanks for watching Anthony!
@anthony Your vocals won't be pushed back if you sidechain the reverb to your vocals.
Really enjoying your tutorials, thanks very much!
Glad to help!

GREAT video (and very cool song)! Thanks for the info!
Our pleasure!
Thanks this is great! I learned the effect, how to do a stereo delay, and how to use buses finally! God bless!
No problem!
that was awesome, exactly what i was looking for!
Man, you're my hero. Love you!
I kept thinking about the lyrics when I was watching this video keep going on and on and on!
Despite the long introduction, this was an excellent tutorial.

i loved your video and learned something new. thank you so much. 🙏

Glad you've enjoyed it!
To avoid the problem of the voice turning back in tour mix you have to send it to an auxiliar track and use the predelay of the reverb...
You've got great videos. I'm sure you're helping a lot of people. Thanks!
nice video, thankyou bro, what about Feedback settings ?
Useful.I'll try it in my next track. Thanks
This is great man! Thank you!
very nice to grasp this concept easily ..thanks!
You're welcome! Glad we could help.
Awesome! I'm the 100.001st subscriber :-)
How do you create a black background behind you?
Awesome! Your video was very helpful thank you for sharing your awesome video
Great video once you got into actual examples. I didn't realize what a huge difference delay makes. I'm definitely going to be using it more in my future songs.
Glad to hear. Best of luck!

Great info!!! Thanks!!!
Just wonderful teaching. Thank you so much!
That means a lot, thank you. Happy to help!
Thank you man . Thank you
Do you know the settings that set the delay effect to repeat the previous word?
Thanks so much, I compose and record acoustic based "americana style" music. I hate having to use compression because it's so hard to hear the subtle differences. This was very helpful.
Thanks Rob, just what I was looking for, great tutorial!
thank you so much !!
Our pleasure!

Thank you.
Thank you, an excellent tutorial.

Great stuff. Ta.
Awsm man.... can you tell me your light setup and background???
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!! Please keep them coming :)

Haha thank you! Glad we could help you out.
ay it's ok if u an absolute beginner, but there is a general lack of quick info tutorials, everybody takes their sweet time
How does this apply to backing vocals please? 🙏
In this video you created a new bus which showed up at the end of the Mix window and moved it to be next to the vocal track. How was that done?
Nice demonstration. Please ignore those impatient commenters with 5 second attention span; they are either just impatient kinds that haven't really learned how to use fast forward an time control on the video, OR geniuses who are going to accomplish soo much stuff in life that I don't know why they waste any seconds on watching yt videos.

awesome videos, thanks alot
How did yo move the bus track please???🙏🙏🙏
Well how can i get a stereo delay like that in Fl studio?
The delay in Fl doesn’t give you the option to alter left and right seperatly
Excellent. Thanks
No problem, glad we could help!
Thx for the trick man,
Great advice! Thanks for the video!!
My pleasure!
Is stereo slapback sometimes called something else?
Super helpful :)
