This is different from the Alamo because in this case the Mexican Californios were the local ranchers who picked up arms against the invading American army. In the Alamo, it was the Texan ranchers who picked up arms against the Mexican army invading what they considered their home.
Correct, in both cases Californios and Tejanos were both trying to escape the corrupted Mexican infighting ways that left them defenseless and ignored. this is also not mentioned correctly in Mexican history books either. Quite probable that deep intel in the D.C. was fully aware of the discontent on the frontier which encouraged American expansionism and many on the frontier encouraged immigration from Europe and the U.S. in these Hispanic regions, with intent to secede from Mexico. For example, Sutter was a Swiss immigrant, who built a mill in California and William Hartnell was an English trader based in Monterey whose uncle was involved in an English Pacific trading empire, coincidently the British Admiralty required regular intel from Pacific traders and was already monitoring Russian encroachment in the north Pacific as well as American intervention in Monterey Bay. As they say in Show Bizz, the plot was thickening!

This is talking about Fremonts Peak. It's in the Gabilan Mountains, there's a lot of discrepancies in this video. I'm a local, have spent my entire life climbing to the very place Fremont placed the flag. It was called Gabilan Peak under Spanish/Mexican rule. Also the peak is in between the Spanish Mission San Juan Bautista and Salinas, CA. Monterey, CA is over 20 miles away to the west, where the US Marines had stormed the beaches and secured the Presidio of Monterey, about two weeks before Fremont would finally arrive.
Back in the 60's most of this was taught to me in elementary school with a heavy American slant of course, which inticed me to " learn more " thx mate 👍🤪🤪🤪
Fremont’s peak is between Salinas and San Juan Batista. Salinas was the half way stop from SJB to Monterey. In front of the little red Lagunita School is a plaque on a rock to remember the battle of Natvidad. A dozen Californios died facing off with Fremonts men.
@ G’day, James. No, I just thinking about what Fremont was probably thinking. He surely wanted more firepower, and likely sought it out? Close air support wasn’t available. He probably thought some wild, imaginative thoughts? Anybody would. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
The Bear Flag Revolt, the Mexican War, consolidating ‘Yankee’ land from coast to coast, was a critical element in the creation of USA. Not just from a land grab perspective, but having vast oceans to the east and west, and having somewhat friendly relationships with nations North and South, the consolidated USA has defensible boundaries on all sides. This is one of the main reasons there have been no significant invasions. Not a small advantage.
Mexico already had coast to coast access. Mexico was a direct competitor to the U.S.. They destroyed and took their Christian neighbors. Not very religious of them.
On the contrary, California especially Los Angeles reminds me of Bangkok and the Philippines where the extremely unethically wealthy live right beside the heartbreakingly poor. This area disgusts me.
Worth noting that the Spaniards and Mexicans had already "stolen" the land long before these events. Even the "native" tribes were not really native to the area, and they frequently warred with and took land from one another. It's easy to make out the American explorers and settlers as the bad guys, while ignoring the fact that everyone before them had done the same thing. Human nature is common among them all.
Not necessarily true... there were/are many tribes that did not war with each other. In fact some tribes were even considered docile and did not possess weapons for fighting. Most of those peoples were the first to get wiped out due to disease, slavery, violence or assimilation.
The Californios are of Native American decent. Mostly Uto-Aztecan from California to Texas to Mexico City. Saying everyone has done this before is false. The English speakers wanted to steal and murder and they did. It was not honorable or patriotic. They should have fought for Europe this way.
Yes but not a fair statement 30 years of newly independent Mexico. If we use the year 1542 when captain Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo flagged California to 1848 that changed hands to United States would make 306 years California was not taken by Mexico. New Spain gain independence from the crown of Spain. Right?
And who were/are the Mexicans/Californios?? We are the Descendants of North American Indigenous peoples and the first Europeans (Spanish/portuguese) to settle these lands.
Mexican history starts with the arrival of the Spanish int central Mexico. We don’t start American history from 1776. New spain gained its independence from Spain but its name was changed to Mexico.

I think the comparison is based on their tactical situation not the political one.

How do you not call it the "Calimo"?
A completely fair criticism. Ashamed we didnt think of that.
California was facing a military invading force, and the US government gave the order for invasion

Of course the Gatling gun wasn’t invented until the 1860s.

Mexicans in California where a mixture of Spaniard and natives..
Difference Spanish and Mexicans integrated Natives among their societies. People from the east didn’t at that time.

Sounds like you’re just justifying things lol
The treatment of the natives by the californians after this war was criminal and evil😢
All the treatment, to all native Americans was evil!
