11 am, August 9, 2020, A train with double-stacked containers skips a track and skids three tracks over, hitting a parked train. The train accident happened in the CN Railyard in the Gastown district of Vancouver, BC, Canada.
Living above this CP Rail West Coast Express train yard can be unpleasant a lot of the time. It is a boisterous and dirty environment. For that reason, most of my building has to have their windows closed. The trains are so loud that they fill your entire apartment and block out all other sounds. You can not hear the conversation, your tv, nothing. And we are five floors up. This noise pollution can happen at any time of the day. 4 am trains will arrive in the yard, and it becomes a 1/2 to 1-hour banging, backing up, banging some more headache.
This train derailment in Vancouver was the start of my day. I have grown used to the loud sounds coming from the yard, but this was otherworldly. The sound of metal ripping and crashing, being dragged. I quickly got my phone out and ran to the window to see what was causing the racket. It took a few seconds to realize that what I saw was a train being dragged across several tracks-a term called Splitting the Switch.
Spitting the switch happens with the switch springs into a different position when the coach is travelling on the straight track. The wheels of the front coach continue on the straight path as intended, but the rear wheels are not on the diverging track. This causes the rear cars to be pulled violently from the diverging track in a sideways motion and, in this case, crash into other parked trains.

Can't see what kind of switch it was, but remote operated power switches are supposed to be fail safe. Loose points should have put it on the ground at the switch, so ... someone threw the switch under the car, or a spring switch got tripped back to default, if that's possible (can't remember the full details on those).

This is just another symptom of a poorly run railway. I'm from the UK and have been to Vancouver, quite a few times and the condition of the rail tracks is appalling, with 6 inches + of rail movement quite regular. My Sister lives not far from White Rock and the lines that come in from the US are just awful. If they were like that in the UK, the line would be shut down. The CP and CN lines, that run up the Fraser valley are little better, as is the line that runs up along Howe Sound.

The big difference is that Canada, hell, BC alone, is much bigger that the UK, has mountains to negotiate that make Ben Nevis look like a wee hill, and has 4,000 miles of mainline track from sea to shining sea, and ships tonnage that would make English locos blow a gasket. On two major railways! Maintaining that much trackage to the level it should be is a phenomenal challenge, and I doubt a Brit crew running it would have much better luck.
Not an excuse, but a reason.

Condition is perfectly fine when line speeds are 60 MPH, in an isolated area, and sees minimal passenger traffic. Canada and the US are a whole lot bigger than Oregon.

25000 ton potash trains or 2+mile long container trains moving at 60 mph make British Rail look like a toy.

@@doneckford1189 Oh, yeah! Our trains would pound British railways into rubble.

Aye, British Rail would shut down the line. The distance from Falmouth to Thurso is less than Vancouver to Calgary with a lot more people in between to maintain and pay for it.

LOL... that's what i was thinking... engrs have to watch their amp meter even when going at low yard speeds... an increase could mean trouble behind you... however on the flipside, these new locos crank out so much more tractive effort and horsepower that i wonder if this mishap would have even registered on the amp meter of a new high horsepower loco
