Giving it a more user-friendly interface with memory is simple enough, if the manufacturer wanted to do so. Finally, getting price down is a simple matter of economy of scale: these need to be produced not 25 units at-a-clip (as I suspect they currently are), but about 1,000 units at-a-clip... to get the per-unit production costs down to where the improved build-quality units could be sold at a retail price of somewhere between $195 USD and $295 USD. If these three issues were addressed, I would buy one today. Honestly, it is the build quality and interface issues, not the price, that prevent me from jumping on this right now, even at the $400 USD price. To pursue this a bit further, what would really be awesome, is if this type of huge display were part of a good quality functioning equalizer, rather than being a display-only type device. Admittedly though, now we are really increasing the production costs, as such an equalizer would probably be double to triple to current display-device--only price. I am amazed that the current generation does not see the value in equalizer or graphic spectrum analyzer displays, such as this gloriously oversized display. Huge components wrapped in silver metal... and even wood veneers... adorned with heavy weighted knobs, and that beautiful long illuminated analog AM/FM tuner dial glowing nicely... accentuated with the hypnotic bounce of the equalizer's graphic spectrum analyzer were a feast for both the ears and the eyes. Sadly, this gave way to the 1980's B.P.C. (Black Plastic Crap) components and the equalizer and its graphic spectrum analyzer ("music visualizer") eye candy vanished from the market quite unceremoniously. If only the market demand were still there... this giant display could be manufactured thousands of units at a clip by some well-funded electronics company like Kenwood, Sony, TEAC, Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer, etc... and the price would be marketable, and the build quality would be what one would expect from such companies. Ah, the old "ebay after drinking routine". I have made many a purchase this way, you're right, it makes sense at the time ;-) Regarding the cost of this product, I personally don't think it's too much if it's a made to order item. No small business can compare to a mass production factory. The components and machinery to make this will cost more for a small company as I assume there isn't enough demand for these to warrant mass production, and of course whoever is making these needs to earn a crust. Great video.
I must admit that, you Sir, are king of denouncing the haters. Hands down, the best, nehr, the only video that explains this happy-daisy thing that we all want to know more anout. Straight props for the tea-spew. Again, haters. Please keep it up, I'm a closet 'arbitrary' tech-fan and audio fan. You're creating my my favorite* channel. *sorry, Yank here.
What people need to understand is this would be far cheaper if it was in mass production in a factory. Probably under £100 as it's a pretty simple device. But it was clearly made by a lone hobbyist, which means the price is probably more of a reflection of his/her cost in time.
Not just time, either. If you source parts yourself, on a small scale, you pay a lot more for them than a big manufacturer would, in bulk. If it's a Chinese hobbyist, at least he's closer to the source, but even then, he'd still have to spend time dealing with suppliers over all the parts that didn't arrive, or didn't work, or were the wrong thing in the packet - just like we have to here, but with a shorter waiting time in between.
Cracking video as always Mat! Many moons ago when I was new to this ebay malarkey I took delivery of a 650w petrol generator via ebay. This was a complete surprise to me as I hadn't ordered it but yet it was purchased using my ebay account on my computer. What's even stranger is I was in the room with my computer that evening and didn't see anyone else using it. I remember the evening well because I was enjoying a rather nice bottle of shiraz at the time. I personally have absolutely no use for a 650w petrol generator, however it was a good price so I can understand why someone could be tempted. At least it wasn't a late night winning bid placed on a moped in Birmingham. Well not that occasion anyway.
I like and agree with all your comments. Your observations and detailed description are spot on. To make a unit like this as a one off easily with run as much cost due to "one of everything needed purchasing". To have a product that functions well enough like this and no remote to adjust features creates that moment/question. How much more to get it to function using a remote control with say 4 or 5 key functions like on/off, select and up down like the programmable led strips. "priceless" yea ya
No thanks, I get enough hate mail. That said, I stopped watching the new TG 10 mins into episode two. However I was never that into cars, just liked the silly old men fooling around type sections. I'll give the GT a try when it is out.

Okay okay okay, just to make it clear, you're definitely related to James May in some way, shape, or form. You're also the reason that I brought my old vinyl collection back to life and bought a record player just recently. Love the videos. Thanks
+Cam Shaft ....ah but therein lies the rub. Without purchasing this device and bringing this review to you, we would both be existing in a different reality. You wouldn't have heard about this visualiser or know whether it had any issues. As this video wouldn't exist neither would your comment. Just think how much richer we all are for having this new knowledge rather than watching a video with an old nutter just showing 'some kind of software' on an LCD TV.
@@Techmoan "watching a video with an old nutter just showing 'some kind of software' on an LCD TV." I did enter the comment zone to suggest that it might be easier to have some sort of software create a display on my TV when I have my music playing. I'll even pay for the Whiskey to get this done.
I suggest a new recurring segment. You deliberately get yourself pissed out of control and buy electronics. It's important you are sloshed enough not to recall what you bought, or even /that/ you bought anything. Then make reviews of things you didn't know you ordered. I have no clever idea for a name of the segment, but maybe such a name can be crowd sourced.

Absolutely gorgeous! I think re-framing is an excellent option to match décor. My reaction to the price was somewhat similar, I am sure people will be considering a regular TV plus a raspberry pi, but its less authentic.
Wow, I wish that we had that back in the days of the old three channel colour organs !! That thing is just so cool to watch while playing the old tunes for sure !! Nice ...
It's gone up and price. From the link in the description, the seller is now charging $585.00 USD! Shipping to US is $85.76! But definitely a cool item for a video. Thank as always for the great video!
It’s not about bringing back Flashing Lights. I found it very therapeutic watching the Visualization on computer screen whilst listening to my favourite tracks, it really allowed me to float away.
It was a good thing I had already finished drinking my cup of tea before viewing the price of this spectrum analyser, sparing me the clean up job. Phew.... Ha Ha. I love the humour that comes along with your videos, Mat. Good Job. Thanks.
I was looking for something like that for ages!!! Didn't even knew for what shall I google, but here it is, presented by you. Thank you. The price is rather high though.

Oscar Velazquez In the US, it's called the Underwriters Knot, after Underwriters Laboratories, our electrical safety certification company. For example, a knot must be tied into the cord inside the light fixture of table lamps. But, they could have used a better cord strain relief, like a spring at least.
That's pretty pricey for AliExpress, I've bought a few pretty decent)android devices from there for less than £20 before. They're great for knock off stuff and flash carts to old games consoles too! Even got an Arcade machine flash cart there and I didn't even know they existed!
I was in a Guitar Center in Orlando, Florida a long time ago and they had one that was about 4 feet tall by 8 feet wide. It was amazing. Each band was it's own piece and it was HUGE. lol
Couldn't agree more about the lack of blinking lights on now-a-days hifi gear. Couple things I'd like to see if I can not pick. Peak hold on the top meters that slowly fade down. Also some kinda HZ/KHZ designation to what frequency each bar represents. I know you could make the thing a lot more hi tech, say control it with your iPhone, but I suppose $400 is enough. Love the videos keep making more.
:| $400!? Excuse me while I go see about a thing. (also) I tlooks like you should be able to splice in a simple battery backup, (two diodes + coin cell,) to only power the PCB. Without knowing the actual power draw of the PCB I would guess that it would allow it to retain settings overnight, but if there is an unimplemented stand-by mode that could be significantly incresed. edit: also, I would like to expand my earlier offer to make custom connectors for "entirely too much money" to whatever electronic product you are willing to invest "too much money" for, except cameras.
You could buy a low end 42" LCD TV for that sort of money, and just run some visualiser software through it for a much bigger and better effect. It could never be worth what they're asking, it's silly money for a quite ropey product. Nice video, though, keep them coming! Loved the spitting out of the coffee, I share your sense of humour, and your videos are amongst the most entertaining on TH-cam.
Makes me want to check out the "light organs" that were around during the 1960s and 70s. My aunt had one and it came in a wood cabinet and looked really cool!
520 bucks with shipping.. Think I`ll pass lol, I mean it`s cool, I want one, but JEEEEZUS CHRIST what a price! You can get a DJI phantom drone for that.. This needs to be MUCH better built and WAY more fancy for that kind of money. But I like it..
I always find it amusing when the manufacturers wipe the part numbers off the chips like this (5:48), even though they are very likely just generic parts. The top chips look like bog-standard '74 series logic / buffer chips, and the two smaller chips are clearly just opamps for the microphone and line-input. I am tempted to build something similar to this, as I think the LED panels themselves aren't overly expensive. Nice vid. ;) I also have a Vectrex btw (just watched your latest vid) - great little machines. I will be building a Colour Vectrex after the New Year, but based on a clone Vectrex logic board (using either the original chips which I have most of, or using an FPGA Vectrex core.) It will only be using a 14" colour CRT though, so I'm not expecting the "resolution" to look too fantastic. Obviously the games will need to be modded though, or the colour changed depending on the beam position (so you could simulate what the overlays do for each game.)
Because, where can you buy (not make) a better one for less money that has as many or more features that is a stand alone device and requires no configuration? Also, people do all kinds of silly things for fun. ;)
I would be shocked if you could manufacture (what about the cost of design?) "one" for that price. I'm sure you could manufacture 10,000 for less than 10,000 x that price. But I don't want to spend the time to try and sell 9,999 of these.
pretty cool and looks really neat, adding some simple visuals to good music is always a nice complement to the music. i know that power cord is short, but why not tuck it away behind that reel to reel thing?
The price is hilarious. I expected something around 50 USD. Kinda funny to think about how cheaply this is being produced and then sold with a massive profit
I like the visualizers as well. I think home theatre was the reason they went away. Any lights on your amplifier were considered distracting. Some 90's 2000"s receivers had nearly no lights at all on the front panel. I know people who put their video game consoles, A/V equipment in a closet and control them with a RF remote.
ADC made a spectrum analyzer equalizer in the mid to late 70's but it wasn't nearly as big as what you have. They were VERY EXPENSIVE even back then and now are priced probably double of what they cost. Mine was over 300.00 bucks back then. It was a beautiful piece of equipment and i wish i hadn't gotten rid of it now!!
i thought i recognized your voice. yep, i've watched a few of your great camera reviews. this unit's too big and expensive for my bicycle system needs, but it was interesting seeing it. as to "the biggest analyzer", that award would have to go to software that lets you put an FFT on your TV screen however big THAT is. i've seen a couple people do system demos with TV FFTs. (fast fourier transformers aka spectrum analyzers) how anyone could complain about your videos which demo the crap out of stuff where so many others just "blah blah blah" and never show whatever in action eludes me. keep up the good work, and maybe i'll stumble onto your videos again for some other topic besides this and sports cams. awesome detailed review.
finally revisiting this video, took me forever to find it (techmoan, you have way too many videos with “sepctrum analyzer” and “VU meter” in the title lol) I’m really wanting one of these to go behind my stereo on the wall. Like you, I love lights with my music, I’m a fellow 80s tech fan in a big way.

This is such a wonderful idea for a product. I have been looking for a large-display graphic spectrum analyzer
(or "music visualizer" as you call it) for years. The Kenwood Models GE920 and GE930, from the 1980's, were
the equalizers with the largest graphic spectrum analyzers (one for each stereo channel) ever made, back in their day.
The fact that this one offers microphone open-air connectivity requiring no physical hook-up at all is amazing.
The problems are... exactly as you state them in your video: the build quality is lackluster, the 64-stage button cycling
with no memory of a favorite setting is irritating, and the price is too prohibitive. These problems are fixed easily enough.
Using stiffer components and properly framing the unit in a thicker plastic or acrylic case (which could then be wrapped in
a choice of brushed aluminum or even wood veneer) solved the build quality. Giving it a more user-friendly interface
with memory is simple enough, if the manufacturer wanted to do so. Finally, getting price down is a simple
matter of economy of scale: these need to be produced not 25 units at-a-clip (as I suspect they currently are),
but about 1,000 units at-a-clip... to get the per-unit production costs down to where the improved build-quality units could
be sold at a retail price of somewhere between $195 USD and $295 USD. If these three issues were addressed,
I would buy one today. Honestly, it is the build quality and interface issues, not the price, that prevent me from jumping on
this right now, even at the $400 USD price.
To pursue this a bit further, what would really be awesome, is if this type of huge display were part of a good quality
functioning equalizer, rather than being a display-only type device. Admittedly though, now we are really increasing the
production costs, as such an equalizer would probably be double to triple to current display-device--only price.
I am amazed that the current generation does not see the value in equalizer or graphic spectrum analyzer displays,
such as this gloriously oversized display. Today, everyone seems content with their smart phone (or iPod / MP3 player)
and a pair of cheap earphones. In the 1970's and very early 1980's, the "Hi Fi" was a centerpiece in many people's
living rooms. Huge components wrapped in silver metal... and even wood veneers... adorned with heavy weighted
knobs, and that beautiful long illuminated analog AM/FM tuner dial glowing nicely... accentuated with the hypnotic
bounce of the equalizer's graphic spectrum analyzer were a feast for both the ears and the eyes. Sadly, this
gave way to the 1980's B.P.C. (Black Plastic Crap) components and the equalizer and its graphic spectrum
analyzer ("music visualizer") eye candy vanished from the market quite unceremoniously.
If only the market demand were still there... this giant display could be manufactured thousands of units at a clip
by some well-funded electronics company like Kenwood, Sony, TEAC, Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer, etc... and the price would
be marketable, and the build quality would be what one would expect from such companies. Oh... I can dream.

Good Job. Thanks.
Necessary. This is necessary...
I was looking for something like that for ages!!! Didn't even knew for what shall I google, but here it is, presented by you. Thank you. The price is rather high though.
at 2:02, you should have put sunglasses on lol
Your audio setup is a dream.
2:08 Like a boss.
Mitchell Hang
It was awesome, but I would have done this. Holding the virtualizer above my head, whilst playing, "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel.

🎥 Say Anything... (3/5) Movie CLIP - Boombox Serenade (1989) HD ...
Ludicrous size achievement unlocked. Unless in a future video you want to cover an entire wall, I'd say you just delivered on a Giant ready-made LED Music Visualiser. No complaints here.
Why is is this so expensive and could you not make a cheap one using a Raspberry pi and a old lcd screen ?
where can I send payment to?
I like to fool myself by thinking I have no space to put all those nice things... :)
Great videos and is good to see you having fun. Thank you!
a knot to hold the cable in place, classic
Oscar Velazquez In the US, it's called the Underwriters Knot, after Underwriters Laboratories, our electrical safety certification company. For example, a knot must be tied into the cord inside the light fixture of table lamps. But, they could have used a better cord strain relief, like a spring at least.
I can’t understand why the last 2 bars are not spaced?
Can it be used as a webcam?
you make the greatest videos!
this is definitely the coolest youtube channel I've seen!
Each band was it's own piece and it was HUGE. lol
Ok, I never realized this, but you sound so much like James May.
I closed my eyes during part of this video, HAHAHA He really does
Couldn't agree more about the lack of blinking lights on now-a-days hifi gear.
Loved the spitting out of the coffee, I share your sense of humour, and your videos are amongst the most entertaining on TH-cam.
now it's $585 US............
Ten times as much as the other one..
Really funny watching it react to speech too lol..
I'm glad I found your channel. It's nice to see you working after leaving Top Gear.
It is cool.😎 But it is expensive 😨, I don't drink😱 so I'll have to figure out a different way to convince myself 😰 that I Need one of these.😈
I always find it amusing when the manufacturers wipe the part numbers off the chips like this (5:48), even though they are very likely just generic parts.
The top chips look like bog-standard '74 series logic / buffer chips, and the two smaller chips are clearly just opamps for the microphone and line-input.
I am tempted to build something similar to this, as I think the LED panels themselves aren't overly expensive.
Nice vid. ;)
I also have a Vectrex btw (just watched your latest vid) - great little machines.
I will be building a Colour Vectrex after the New Year, but based on a clone Vectrex logic board (using either the original chips which I have most of, or using an FPGA Vectrex core.)
It will only be using a 14" colour CRT though, so I'm not expecting the "resolution" to look too fantastic.
Obviously the games will need to be modded though, or the colour changed depending on the beam position (so you could simulate what the overlays do for each game.)
why do people pay that price for a thing that is that badly made?
Because, where can you buy (not make) a better one for less money that has as many or more features that is a stand alone device and requires no configuration? Also, people do all kinds of silly things for fun. ;)
I dont known were you could buy one but you could manifacture a better one for that price
I would be shocked if you could manufacture (what about the cost of design?) "one" for that price.
I'm sure you could manufacture 10,000 for less than 10,000 x that price. But I don't want to spend the time to try and sell 9,999 of these.
It's a niche product. They probably sell a few hundred at most, so there's no way to produce them cheaper.
Lolz at the Tea Spit !. All good hi-fi should have strobing led's :)
This is too expansive
pretty cool and looks really neat, adding some simple visuals to good music is always a nice complement to the music. i know that power cord is short, but why not tuck it away behind that reel to reel thing?
The price is hilarious. I expected something around 50 USD. Kinda funny to think about how cheaply this is being produced and then sold with a massive profit
A VFD music visualiser would be awesome! I love that green glow.
its not expensive, its ridiculous waste of money..
So pleasing to watch on your set up !
What's the music playing at around 2:42 ?
Thanks !
This is too cheap
absolutely amazing one of my favorite channels on TH-cam
Keep looking for these! Love them.
The serious face just made me lose it, I think that was hilarious
I notice you have a piece of Phase Linear Equipment on top of your Reel to Reel. Is that for the next video?
I like the visualizers as well. I think home theatre was the reason they went away. Any lights on your amplifier were considered distracting. Some 90's 2000"s receivers had nearly no lights at all on the front panel. I know people who put their video game consoles, A/V equipment in a closet and control them with a RF remote.
I really like your reviews. Thank you.
Will you be doing a review of your Pono player?
what is the track after bethoven's fifth symphony? the light hearted one. I really liked it!
Just what i wanted. Hope its still available
i thought i recognized your voice. yep, i've watched a few of your great camera reviews. this unit's too big and expensive for my bicycle system needs, but it was interesting seeing it. as to "the biggest analyzer", that award would have to go to software that lets you put an FFT on your TV screen however big THAT is. i've seen a couple people do system demos with TV FFTs.
Thanks that's just what I was looking for!
Good, but you have heavy mid frequencies in your system... or is it the Microphone in the device?
finally revisiting this video, took me forever to find it (techmoan, you have way too many videos with “sepctrum analyzer” and “VU meter” in the title lol) I’m really wanting one of these to go behind my stereo on the wall. Like you, I love lights with my music, I’m a fellow 80s tech fan in a big way.
that introduction made my day
so you switched your reel to reel player out I see. Are you going to talk about why you got rid of your other one and do an update of this new one you have?
Was looking for this video,- glad its here :)
