I enjoyed this episode. Steve, the next time you talk to Doug, please let him know that he's managed to temper my harsh negative opinion on "quality deer management". From what I'd seen on other hunting shows, I was left with the impression that its sole purpose was simply to grow trophy bucks for landowners and their friends. If indeed it promotes the harvest of does and the occasional young buck then it allows young and/or new hunters ample opportunity to bag an animal and become encouraged to continue hunting. I can live with that.
As a Wisconsin resident I'm a big fan of Steve and all of his shows and podcasts. I'm glad no matter where he seems to be he is pretty knowledgeable of the area and supportive of all of the locals and hunting culture.
This was such a good episode. As both a hunter/fisherman and backyard gardener the connections between wildlife and plant life are undeniable. The best way to have a healthy species of any kind is to create a healthy environment. The only way to benefit each species is to benefit all species. To this point I think responsible hunters (which i think most are) are some of the most important environmentalists.
Born and raised in Shawano Co, WI. Earn-a-buck was the best policy ever implemented in WI to grow larger, more mature bucks. Unfortunately , I think there may have been problems with people choosing not to hunt. I wish we could’ve seen more results of this policy.
