Yes, I wish that all dollar stores had such a selection, but at the very least I try to demonstrate that it is indeed possible to create balloon columns for pennies on the dollar - if you can find a good location. I am a bit hopeful for the situation, however, as it seems there are many more folks than even I expected who were able to locate what is needed to build this decoration, and I've noticed more and more stores carrying more and better balloon stock these last few years. How long will they last? How far in advance can they be made?
Hi! I recommend creating this as close to the event as possible to ensure the luster of balloons as well as the structural stability of the design. What I do, is I create it the night before the event - then I wrap it up in big plastic bags (airtight) to keep the air from dulling the balloons and slowing down the process of the air molecules escaping through the latex molecules’ gaps. You can make it earlier, but it won’t have the same “wow factor” you will want to impress your friends and family with.
It depends on what you mean by “last”. Sitting around in your home, an arch or column can easily last a week - though the balloons luster will fade and the surface will take on a more “matte” appearance. The balloons slowly shrink over several days but will still impress people who rarely see such structures even four or five days in. Surprisingly, most of the time you won’t even get a single pop or deflation. I have even done weather testing on different columns and arches and they hold up after heavy rain or frigid temperatures. I tend to think of arches as I do of cut flowers- very lovely, and can be immensely appreciated, but their aesthetics dissipate rapidly, and the most enjoyment can be rendered from them when they are most visually pleasing.
I like the ribbon tie method. The balloons are compact and bouncy! Cute! Did you put the water in the inside round? Good idea for a weight - and, as if that wasn't enough - the balloon columns floating in the fountain made me laugh. Cuteness overload!
