I was a warhammer retailer for over 25 years. I just realized something about the missing factions. They were the strongest selling factions. Warriors and Daemons of Chaos, Vampire Counts, Skaven, Dark Elves, Ogres, Lizardmen. By leaving them out, GW can force sales and make money off the slower selling armies and models from before.
Something also fairly note worthy is that AOS still has those factions fairly intact plus new mini additions and GW clearly don’t want a lot of crossover at this point. For factions that are now considered core Old World those previously available minis were taken away for the large part in preparation of Old World release
@@Svengar Looking at it from a Business perspective GW ostensibly can full on use most of the kits currently in use for those factions with no changes. Them starting with the armies from ToW that are most popular with the fans of ToW (If anyone thinks Brett and TK fans aren't the bulk of the push behind this they haven't been paying attention lol) allows them to feel out what the actual demand will/would be and if it's even worth expanding. If it is, they set themselves up an easy layup for the next 2 years of re-releasing AoS kits with small upgrades or sidegrade sprues much like what 40k is currently doing with the Killteam upgrade sprues in re-released infantry kits allowing them to sell the same models to two markets while they work on what would be the next ToW specific releases we know they're working on, Kislev and Cathay.
Man, I 100% agree with everything you said here,, more or less. I'm so excited for the next few months and eventually the release!! The only thing I'm sad about is that my armies (chaos dwarfs, skaven, vampire counts) aren't in the release line up.. damn it.. lol. Oh well. Looks like its finally time to get into high elves! I'm on board!
Its about selling figures that are cheap to produce and expensive to buy. TK and Bretonnia are two of the armies with the best quality plastic kits from back in the day they can recycle (without using AoS redesigns, like the Wood Elves or the Orcs).
I WILL be playing "legacy" armies. I just hope that Gw will in future expand old world and bring core books for all armies that were available in 8th. I don't think they can release support now in one go for all armies especially when they already have so many delivery problems with current core games.
To be honest, I'm not expecting much from Old World and I don't mean that in a bad way. Something similar to Horus Heresy in terms of releases and scope is fine with me. A reworked version of WHFB with a Rulebook, a few new resin models, maybe a few new plastic kits, and the occasional re-release of old metal models similar to the made-to-order stuff. I'd imagine they'll do a few releases for each of the 'core' armies and that's it, at least for the 1st edition (though I also doubt it will be a new edition every 3 years type of thing). I think expecting this to be given the same attention as their flagship games like AoS and 40k will only lead to disappointment. This will be a specialist game but if it's wildly successful then who knows. GW do like money after all.
My gripe is the ruleset, I want a better and less bloated ruleset, nothing like 40k and AoS, it is the reason i do not play those anymore, they are complicated for the sake of being complicated, not adding anything to the tactical aspect often, making the overall game unbalanced and tiresome. Something in between Warmaster and Warhammer could be the best for me (if they've added alternating activations would have been a must buy), but i have seen the sequences of the turn and they look awfully similar to AoS... In the end there are a lot of well established and agnostic ruleset out there, i'm not the type of person who starts drooling over GW for everything they put on the market, i have some self esteem...
@@infinitedm5396 In the same universe where Maggotkin army has to count the contagion points every turn to summon and at same time has to count and roll for the disease point in two distinct phases maybe? I went asleep while the player was doing his things... And this is the first example that comes to mind...
I'm tentatively excited, as WF is my most-loved setting. I never got round to collecting an Empire army back in the day, as there were already a few in my gaming group, so this seems like a good opportunity. However, I am not going to invest in loads of old sculpts (a few key characters might be okay) and I'm definitely not going to buy any resin minis. I'm also not going to re-purchase or re-base any of my AoS armies just so they're on square bases because I want to continue playing AoS, so there had better be a way of adapting the bases (although I expect we'll have to rely on third parties to do that). And lastly, I'm just not sure I have the energy for another game system when I have so few opportunities to play right now that I would be spreading my gaming even thinner than I already do. But yes, tentatively excited.
Recently came across your videos and have really been enjoying listening to them while painting. Keep up the good work! For me personally, I’m only really excited about the Old World models. If the game is fun, that’s a bonus, but if it is not fun, it’s not deal breaker. If the game is successful, I imagine they’ll release more factions.
I backed a kickstarter that is a "Bretonians" proxy army made entirely of Monty Python and the Holy Grail models, and I am very much thinking I'll have to make an actual army with them.
I think the best way to understand which armies are or aren't included in Old World 1.0 is model range, not background story. (They'll craft that to fit the models). GW has made it clear (officially) the AoS and Old World model ranges will be seperate. (See Heresy units removed from 40k). Ultimately, Old World armies won't show up until their AoS range has been completely updated, and the old fantasy models can be moved wholesale to the Old World setting.
It's a shame! Most of my collection is old fantasy miniatures on round bases and adapted for the Mortal Realms. I also bought several Heresy models, with which I wanted to make my custom Chapter more interesting. And now GW says: this is all for another systems! Either redo it or leave!
I know this is what GW have said officially, and I suspect it to be the case for 80% of the units in the game, however there are a few units (ie Dwarf Longbeards and IronBreakers) that have yet to be phased out of AOS (unlike the last of the high/wood elf and Empire models that were recently replaced/removed) as well as likely the entirety of the beastmen range that will be playing double duty for AOS and TOW. Although I can understand the for and against of why GW would want to keep the ranges as seperate as possible
Not sure it will be that clear-cut as Night Goblins are going to be around (they mentioned Fanatics in the last article) but def useful to think of it that way.
@@Yurt_enthusiast7 While I hope I'm wrong, I could see Beastmen losing AoS support Feb 2024 or at AoS 4.0 launch. I think the range has only 1 new HQ since the AoS reboot, most of the range online only, just mucking around in soggy tea leaves over here ;)
GW is like my ex girlfriend who I loved a lot more than she loved me, she treated me badly and used me for my money. I was proud when I walked away 20 years ago. And just when total war got me reminiscing about the old days and how much I loved it, I walked into my local GW ready to reconsider things... Wow... AoS was a great reminder of how things REALLY used to be
Martha stealing the show! 😻 Plastic kits that rewind the scale creep a bit are my biggest hope. There's so much cool fantasy stuff in their back catalogue that would be fun to add to any game. A streamlined rule system that can attract players from TW would be a bonus, but I'd be surprised if they made any radical changes to the system. And YESSSSSS to re-releasing WHQ!
The magic system seems it will be more like a sequence of abilities rather than super powerful spells cast and countered as their own mini game between opposing casters.
I think the magic is a mistake. They could of tonned down or removed the big game breaking spells. Losing some form of the mini game, even just what order you play spells in, is a bad choice.
@@NateJones10 The biggest issue with the announcement on it's own is it had no actual meaningful information. The big spells will still be there, the game to cast them will likely be there in some form.
Skaven and Vampires should definitely be in an Old World game. Tomb Kings and High Elves though... Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that they're there. But they don't make a lot of sense to include if you're going to _exclude_ a race like Skaven.
I agree completely with most of this, especially the final points around community and engagement. Very much sad as well about VC and Skaven, I still have a sneaky suspicion that the main studio’s plans for AOS meant that there are initial restrictions on these, maybe once they’re covered in a couple more releases they will be freed up. Should be get to a second edition, and I think we will, I think more factions will be brought back, along with maybe new ones like Cathay and (sort of new) Kislev. I really hope they move the story on slowly, working towards the war against chaos, and that’s used as a narrative tool to reintroduce/introduce those factions. Great stuff as usual.
Yea I came here to say something similar about the Skaven. You could use all of the current Skaven AOS models in the Old World because they haven't updated the models much. Similar with the Vampire Counts i think.
@@mrogfaceYep the Skaven, VC and Lizard ranges are quite nicely covered by the current AOS ranges I think. You end up with a situation where players of those armies will only have a ‘Legacy List’, but have very nice (and new and modern in regards to VC and Lizards) miniature ranges, especially when compared to some of the older kits that other factions will end up with.
I think the Tomb Kings being in Empire/Bret land was made to make sense as they are on crusades of their own to collect stolen artifacts and gold, and due to their having a historic claim to the entire land from ancient times, though for all we know that is all old lore that will be superseded by what they are going to write.
Have you heard about 9th Age Fantasy Battles? You can play all your 8th edition armies in that system, and it's very well balanced. Would be cool if more content creators talked about it.
I'm glad I watched this video because I did not see the Core Faction list and have been slowly making a vampire count army. I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens with them.
When it was first announced I thought it was going to mirror the Horus Heresy in than you'd have different factions of the Empire/human lands that used the same plastic kits for the basic foot & mounted Core troop choices. Then each faction would have unique elites/specials (which in some cases would be allies from other races) - so you could flavour your army around a minor Lord allied to one of the "3 Emporers" contesting the throne, or striking out to increase their own influence by allying with darker forces/hiring mercenaries to bolster their own commoner levy. Bretonians, and potentially Kislev would use the same Core kits as the other armies - essentially making 5 all human factions that each have unique units like Bretonian Knights, Kislev Winged Lancers, Reiksguard, Knights of the White Wolf etc. To differentiate them & fill out their Elite & Special unit options. While other factions would instead have these slots filled by things like - Undead (because your "Lord" is actually a Vampire Count from Sylvania - the "core" are the humans that live on his lands, but he summons undead to fight alongside them) Chaos Beastmen or Demons (because your Lord has made a pact with the Chaos Gods - and either allies with a nearby Beastmen herd, or carries out rituals to summon Demons) Dwarven Mercenaries (an engineer with cannons, some warriors, hammerers, etc) Elves (like a unit of elven archers, or spearman, a Dragon Rider, maybe a chariot or knight unit) Then overtime they'd add in armies like Orcs & Goblins, Skaven, Dark Elves & Chaos Dwarves that do not ally with humans and instead are external raiding parties taking advantage of the Empires instability/lack of proper leadership - which would not require any human troops, each would have their own unique Core troop choices. But now it seems like they're going in a completely different direction (more of a complete relaunch only without certain factions that made Warhammer stand out as pretty different compared to other Fantasy Wargames - like Skaven and Lizardmen. Overall I'm still taking a "wait & see" approach to the whole thing - I need to see the full model ranges for the returning factions.
Given Creative Arts, the studio that makes Warhammer Total War, is in total meltdown and has lost the good will of vast amounts of Total War players who were considered the ideal target market for The Old World (indeed, the reason to do it in the first place), and a lot of that is over consumers feeling ripped off, I am very dubious that consumer base is going to tolerate games workshops usual bullshittery, especially around prices, so I dont feel this is going to do the gangbusters it might if CA hadnt screwed up so badly. 3D printing is clearly the answer for affordable WHB, I'm looking at the old world as a campaign pack and maybe a chance to get a reasonably priced big box army, we will see on that, but I dont expect too much and Warhammer Armies Project 9th edition is still out there, still free and glorious for anyone who wants to get into it
@@johnwhite9461 Alright. I was thinking of The 9th age which is doing something like that. I know of like four retail rank and flank game that have came out since GW step away from Warhammer fantasy.
100% agree with your comments about wanting to create a healthy and supportive community around the game. I can't wait to get figures in the table and chuckle at there attempts to survive the foibles of the dice gods.
The post-credits comment: perfection. Lol. Keeping things positive ('cause I do have concerns, but nothing major) I've enjoyed the recent trilogy of campaign books for Necromunda. They've advanced the timeline (shocker!) and given Necromunda players a lot of world fiction to dig into for the first time since the 90s. Since the new Old World game is set during a time of internal upheaval in the Empire, I'd be happy to see similar books for this system. My expectation is they'll want to sell army books at first, but at some point it'd be nice to see campaign books with a lot of background fiction and world-building. When the End Times were upon us and the Age of Sigmar was but a rumor, I started stock-piling High Elves and Skaven. I already owned an Orcs & Goblin army (which is seriously neglected now), so I've got the majority of the miniatures I'd need to play the game... I don't have to start from scratch, so that's nice. It seems likely to me that they'll do some Made to Order old-school minis available around the release window... but they won't come cheap! I hope the game takes off; if not there's always 6th edition. ;-)
Good news is that the flame cannon appeared in one of the Dwarf Old World army pics in one of the WarComm updates a few months ago. Hopefully is a sign of their return to sale 🤞
My son and I got into WHFB with the Bret / Liz release (5th I think). I played Bret and he played Lizardmen. Outside of the launch box, most of my army came from the Battlemasters game but we bought quite a few boxes for the Lizardmen. It's funny as I started with WH40k Rogue Trader and played the most during 2nd edition so when we played WHFB I used to think why doesn't Fantasy have unit coherency like 40k does. Well, after playing AOS, I miss the rank and file. During Covid I went to visit my son and we went to his gaming store and they still had some of the older sets so I picked up most of the Blackstone Fortress line and expansions, Silver Tower and the other one (still downstairs unopened). I'm kind of on the fence about GW re-releasing Mordheim. On the one hand, it would be cool but on the other, there is such a fan following for Mordheim and I'd hate for GW to hit it with the Banhammer for copyright infringment. There are so many great websites out there for Mordheim, it would be sad to see them all be taken down.
The one thing I'm really hoping for is the return of 6th edition style mixed Beast Herds with the raiders and ambush rules. The beastmen army felt appropriately anarchic and chaotic when they had that option and I'd love to be able to bring back my old beasts army and use them the way the gods intended.
Beastmen 6th Ed. Should have been my new army but I wasn't as big on the change from 5th Ed. Back then. I still have my 4th Ed. Dwarves, 5th Ed. Bretonians and than later after many years I collected some Orcs and Goblins and Empire models.
I’m looking forward to previously OOP minis coming back into production. I would love some made to order options of the metal range. GW could be leaving some fairly serious money on the table if they don’t think about doing that…you only have to look at current eBay prices to get a feel for it. Fingers crossed the game system itself is also great plus some very nice lore
I am very much looking forward to the return of WFB. This is where my love of fantasy models came from . It would be a perfect excuse for me to make that Dwarven Army I have always wanted. I do still have my Warriors of Chaos army, love the Chaos Warrior models!. But deep down I am a short bearded warrior who has a serious grudge with greenskins lol.
An opportunity for some new minis along with using the old appeals to me. Same could be said for the game. I hope it’s accessible & brings ppl together for a range of play (narrative, tournament, team). Thanks for the positive vibes Jordan.
As someone who missed WHFB entirely, and fell in love with the setting thanks to Total War, Vermintide, and Chaosbane, I'm actually really looking forward to getting the old models. Every time I bought a box of Empire State Troops for the previous Cities of Sigmar army, I was in heaven. As great as those new Brettonian plastics look, I'm thrilled to get the old ones, too, and I feel like GW is really leaving money on the table by not pushing out early releases to get people hyped for the full game release.
My greatest fear at this point is the WFB community - Age of Sigmar has gotten a reputation among GW's big systems for having a much more cheerful and positive community than the other games, whereas the WFB community seem to enjoy dumping on the End Times and AoS more than they actually enjoy Warhammer itself. My main hope is they put out a more concisely written, modern game, rather than hewing too religiously to previous editions of the game. As you say, the old editions are right there, as are the fan projects, so I'd much rather see them sacrifice some sacred cows and produce a rulebook that doesn't require a Grail Reliquae team to lift it. Kings of War takes several positive steps in that regard, so I'd like to see some inspiration flow back from that. The mention in a recent preview that units that lose combat might be pushed back without breaking entirely is something I'm massively excited about, WFB's historic tendency to function like a traffic jam in a treacle factory is its least appealing quality. More dynamic movement across the board (in both senses of the phrase) would be a huge deal, and would help contain the effects of everyone going up a base size (which is the right move for modelling, but potentially problematic for gameplay).
I just want the minis to look like the ones from the 90s. Never gonna happen from what I’ve seen, everything shown so far just looks like Age of Sigmar to me.
I agree I got loads from 4th and 5th Ed era as well as some of the older minis. The early 90s minis had a charm and feel about them. Esp the bald Daemonettes with massive crab claws not like these modern ones. Got to love the original Greater Daemons of the 80s and early 90s.
I collected pretty much all the Warhammer armies back in the day (30 years ago), not Skaven. But the one I want most this time around is Dwarves!!! And, I want the old sculpts. Who knows my old Throne of Power (the only sculpt I have left from then) my be on the battle field again. Subbed.👍👍Joy. That is what I am looking for, to somehow recapture teh fun that Warhammer was, it that is at all possible without my old friend base, Games Workshop lock-ins and so on.❤❤
My initial excitement for TOW has been gradually sapped away with the drip feed of information and the half hearted effort GW seem to be putting into the release. A setting of an Imperial civil war leading up to the Great War against Chaos felt like it would have lots of potential. Not to mention the original focus they had on Kislev. But it feels like the scope of the game has been severely limited since the original announcement. As a Bretonnian player I'm still happy to be able to get "new" models instead of ebay.
I'm that generation that got into RPGs in the '80s as a teenager and was an avid reader of White Dwarf from around issue 50. Around 1984, Games Workshop happily promoted and licensed other company's games and White Dwarf reflected this. Around 1987 this began to change, as Jackson and Livingstone had sold GW to Bryan Ansell and the emphasis quickly turned to miniatures and Warhammer and RPGs became sidelined and dropped. All non GW product, even D&D/AD&D, was dropped from White Dwarf. There was a lot of animosity towards these choices at the time, as well as lots of gamers who went with this avidly. White Dwarf just wasn't the same, either in style or content. Years later, I get it. it was a business dicision, although i do believe GW almost killed off the RPG hobby in The UK as they were it's main national promoter, but that's another discussion. Because of this I was always lukewarm on Warhammer, and have a slightly negative view of anything after the third edition. Our friends played Warhammer (Fantasy Battle) alongside D&D, CoC and Runequest, and it wasn't our only focus where some modern gamers may never play a true RPG, which I always think is a shame. The two compliment each other. I say bring back Warhammer Fantasy Role Play!
Agree with your sentiment. Also agree that Warhammer Quest would be a hugely smart thing for them to build up again. Also say that the one thing that Games Workshop needs is more monsters ! (Which could be sold for Warhammer quest and be used as solo creatures on Warhammer battlefields!)
Jordan, what are your predictions regarding how GW might treat updating the Old World games system? I got into MESBG not only because of LotR but because it is such a stable and thus cheap and predictable system. But I did always find the old Warhammer stuff very tantalising, so my interest is piqued despite the misgivings I have about expecting what looks like a constant update churn to a 40k/AoS outsider. Would be curious to hear your thoughts, thank you.
GW support, at the moment, is very very poor. The pattern is the following: - big release time. New big box set/books for preorder. - announcement of a few smaller releases that'll follow scarcely after the first one ( and that could have been included in the first one ). - The new release arrive and is flawed. ( Some rules are badly written, parts of the factions are forgotten except for the poster boys, scattered resources through many books, relying on very old kits that are 20 years old and that are odds with the new models ( but at the same price ), the new models are locked behind the starter set, etc ... ). - GW give an errata online the next week or in a campaign book that'll come 8 month after. - GW forgets about the game and they hype the next new thing. They'll maybe throw a random miniature at a random occasion. - Repeat a few time from step one - Suddenly, whether or not the game just has been updated for every faction, GW release a new edition or merge the game with another one.
There are just too many cool models from other companies nowadays as well as secondhand for me to bother getting excited for whatever GW decides to release. Other companies credit their sculptors too. I love Warhammer but there are too many reasons at this point for me not to care as much as I would like about the release of the old world.
I was thinking 4th and 5th Ed. Bring back the magic cards lol. I left the hobby by the start of 6th Ed so cannot relate to it. Came back to the game at the end of 7th Ed and wasn't a fan. To me 4th and 5th are my faves.
I’m willing to give old world a try and build a smaller version of my old dwarf army I used to have. This may be the last fantasy battle GW game we see in our life. Pardon the dramatic tone. In 8th we never knew it was going to end until it did. Now we have another chance and we know it may not last, so let’s play the living crap out of it until GW throws into the dust bin again.
I'll just dust down my 4th and 5th Ed rule books - smaller armies and so much fun to play 😂. Or you could hybrid rules together from previous other old editions.
Thanks for this! I don’t think I’d ever heard it out loud so have been happily mispronouncing it all this time - good to learn the correct way finally!
It could be great and the new foot bretonnians knights look awesome, no Skaven but the rumor is they will be in the AOS 4th ed box. So yes! yes!, hopefully.
I think that the absence of some armies will be a division between AOS and Old World. Knowing GW they won’t want any direct crossover. So, Skaven will carry on into 4th edition AOS and Beasts of Chaos will be written out and Beastmen placed in Old World. As an AOS convert (played WF from 1992 till Archaeon fucked it up), I’m hoping for a Necromunda approach to Old World. Not in terms of rules, but a smaller scale, more consistent production with a regular release of excellent models and lore. This would make me up for getting involved as a second game to AOS.
I look forward to it very much even if i'm a Dark elves-player. (And Vampire counts). I guess those armies won't be there due to being part of AoS some how. Feel sad that its not all armies. And no sign of Kislev (yet!). That would have been my first choice. Secondly Saratosan pirates (dogs of war?) Or Chaos Dwarwes! However it is probably a good way to start a Bretonian army or a Beastmen army. Or perhaps a Sylvanian army. My fear is that it will be old sculpts and insane prices, hope im wrong. Also hope its not to "grim-dark" I always loved the goofyness of older Warhammer editions.
First of all, I love the return to square bases. AoS, while enjoyable, always feels more then a skirmish due to the round base system, compared to rank and file squared. But most of all, I hope, to reference Captain Spock, a Unification movement. Currently in my area, I can pick to play 6th, 8th or the non-official 9th Age for a Warhammer experience, but it are all different people. ToW, which we won't call 10th edition just yet, might unify all these shattered groups back into one big player pool for more gaming, with a single ruleset.
Can't say I have faith in the success of TOW as it's starting to feeling like an intentionally manufactured second grave for Fantasy. This project has been in the works for 5+ years, yet GW has shockingly little to show for it. This is especially bad when you consider the fact that the project should have already been mostly complete as it's using a preexisting rule set as a base and a large number of the models it uses are still in active production. After all this time what has GW to show us? Some concept art, a handful of vague rule changes, a few new models, the vague notion of in and out of focus factions, mentions that both metal and resin are coming back, and vague mentions of a broken up release schedule. Nothing about this screams confidence on GW's part, and nothing about this shows any signs that GW learned anything from their initial mishandling of Fantasy. Honestly, TOW, like Fantasy before it, is going to live and die by its ability to attract new people and retain them, and so far, GW has done precious little to show they understand that. I hate coming out swinging in such a negative manner, especially when it comes to something I love so dearly, but if GW treats TOW in a similar manner to HH - which they appear to be doing - then I can guarantee that TOW will be lucky to make it to the end of the decade.
Wasn't there a novel or maybe a short story of some Norscans who did some tomb raiding which caused the Tomb Kings to sail up to Norsca to get revenge. Not sure when that happened in the timeline but it would be a pretty good reason for having the Tomb Kings in and around the Old World,
It was the part of the backstory for Dreadfleet. Captain Jago Roth sailed his ship down to steal treasure to pay for his hunt of the Carstein vampire captain and in stealing treasure from a tomb king, angered him. The Tomb King ship in that game is that guy coming after Roth for revenge. It's would be pretty out of place given that it's pretty timeline specific.
I really appreciate your passion Jordan. However, based on the current state of the 40k rules, considering the lack of support for Warcry and KillTeam, and their inability to actually get Legions Imperialis into stores, my expectations are decidedly tempered.
Dunno what to think about the bretonnian knights on foot. They have a too strong AoS-vibe for me. Also kinda curios how expensive it is going to be. Slightly optimistic, but it's still GW in the end.
One of my fears is availability...I hear a lot...(I mean a lot a lot ) of City of Sigmar players wanting to use Britonians which they can technically do...moreover, I can see Death armies wanting to round Base Tomb Kings, so you are going to have two Game systems fighting over models and why should GW stop it? it's more money for them...I just wonder how it's going to shake out. Probably...with much more animosity between AoS and WFB players than there already is.
I have not seen a single fantasy fanboy who would apologize to the Age of Sigmar players for all the nasty things that happened over the past 8 years. You get your game but don't stop your aggression.
Maybe…but my local GW store just perms banned about five WFB fans for being dicks to other customers…your animosity will only get you so far before your not allowed in the store or some guy from the other team knocks your ass out
I’m hoping they expand the armies bevy the end of their first 3 year cycle. Skaven are honestly the easiest add to W:TOW because they really haven’t updated the kits in years. It almost feels like they left them out to avoid drawing attention to that fact.
Despite playing Warhammer Fantasy from 4th edition in the early 90s through the end of the game in 8th edition, I'm really not even paying attention to Old World. GW has consistently shown that they just can't get rules right and don't even seem to think that the rules are all that important. I think some time after 10th edition 40k came out it dawned on me that if Games Workshop can't get 40k right after over 30 years of rules schizophrenia it was just silly for me to continue to expect GW to get it right. Nothing I have see from the Old World previews have changed my mind on this, just the same old BS of a total rules reboot and dribbled out factional rules support. Plus I sold all of my square bases back when they blew the game up a decade ago so I'm sure enough not buying back in. Pound sand Games Workshop.
What do i want? Easy to reading retain rules. Pdf starter lists (modern Ravenous hordes) Cool books focusing on narrative "historical" events. Maybe a vampire wars book one day. O and halflings back in the empire army. In fact, I'll settle for just Halflings. Now into miniatures... not bothered......the 3d StL sculptor community is sooo big and amazing you can get anything and if not then wait for someone to scan it.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar holds a special place in my life, heart and soul too. Eight years ago, the brilliance and power of this new phenomenon took my attention away from even 40k for a long time. One simple idea - old vintage fantasy miniatures on round bases! So simple and brilliant! I reworked all the fantasy models I bought for 40k conversions towards Age of Sigmar. It brought me a lot of happiness. What did bring me a lot unhappiness was the abuse of fantasy fans towards me PERSONALLY. I have a peaceful hobby, but every fantasy grognard or newborn Total War fanboy considers the right to insult me as soon as I mention the Age of Sigmar, both on the Internet and in real life. So what now? 8 years of moral terrorism against me are justified by the “triumphant return of the old world”? Remember: *Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!* (Habakkuk 2:12)
To be honest, the Warhammer Fantasy community is one of the main factors that totally repulsed me from The Old World. I used to play Fantasy back in time, though I mainly was a 40k player. I love Age of Sigmar both as a setting and a game (though my all-time favourite is Warcry, still AoS though), and seeing constant harassment from WHF community towards anything and anyone Age of Sigmar-related is just sickening to be honest. All while I had the best experiences interacting with AoS and Warcry communities of all of the wargaming communities. WHF fanboys constantly assault AoS-related posts, groups, even ones that are purely AoS with no connection to WHF. Especially funny how those people eventually show zero knowledge of the setting and the game when you ask them anything. I think it's kind of an achievement in itself to get people repulsed by the setting and the game just due to its community
I have a terrible fear that this is a smash and grab of old players. Ludicrious prices, the setting being five minutes to midnight, the lack of care in details pointed out by Arch. I struggle to get too excited because of all those things, but especially the prices. I just can't see myself spending nearly fifty pounds per boxed regiment, I just can't justify it.
One unit at a time would probably have been better for the modern gaming meta and engagement amongst newer players. On the other hand, this is how fantasy battle always played and I guess it makes sense
Well, they chose the 2200s (I'm guessing 2252) as the start of the narrative because they wanted to be close to the Great War against Chaos. And it's simply true that there were no large clashes with vampires or skaven at the time. (Of course, GW have made huge retcons numerous times before, and there'll definitely be some tweaking of various parts of the lore, but IMO it's a legitimate way to reduce the initial workload/expectations.) I am 100% certain that the last of five semiannual versus releases will be pitting Warriors of Chaos against an effectively all-new Kislev for another wave of hype circa two years after launch. And they'll save Cathay for at least another two years for the exact same reason. Anyway, I sadly don't see them doing Araby or any minor faction in the Old World any time soon, but I'm guessing that after setting up those ten factions, they'll spend some time focusing on campaign books covering the Great War against Chaos. TOW surely won't be on a breakneck three-year edition cycle. Even in five years, it might actually not be getting a new edition, but a setting expansion similar to current Necromunda instead. And recently it hit me, that while most of the first 9+1 core factions have little to no presence outside the Old World itself, the others could be totally messing with Cathay during or after the exact same time period, which would allow GW to focus on the "not-Pacific" theater with multiple armies, but only one all-new one, Cathay itself, and leave Nippon etc. for later.
Correction. The von Carsteins are dead or quiet. There's plenty of other vampires out causing mayhem like the Strigoi, the Red Duke, the Necrarchs, as well as Dieter Helsnicht. Ultimately I suspect that VC being sidelined is because they're a major AoS faction rather than anything else.
The border princes is former Tomb King territory. Maybe their pissed that for 700 years petty fiefdoms have been occupying the place since the bretonnian crusade against Araby
The folks in my area refuse to play anything but a current official gw game despite my pleads for the them to try wap, opr. And aos just isn’t for me. So I’m really looking forward to have a chance at a fantasy community again in my area. The list of pdf armies was a real disappointment especially because I began repainting and updating my old lizardmen (my favorite faction) army after they announced old world but I think that many of these factions could make great expansions if the series is popular. Expedition lustria or rise of the skaven sound like great campaign books to me
Nice and enthusiastic. I still am mostly very conservative with my excitement. While i would like for be old world to be hugely successful, it will never be as good as WAP or 9th age. It will suffer from the usual flavour of the month, older releases will decline heavily and rapidly in value, as is the History of all gws Marketing driven Games. I will Play it. But without buying anything. I have huge collections of empire and Vampire counts. Some decent base adapters will do all the work it needs.
So…. I like what I have seen so far. That said I will remain skeptical until I see a physical book in my hand that I can read. And once read and played a few times then I’ll make a decision. I’m a dwarf guy. I’m guessing that’s gonna take a long while to come out. So I’m more than happy taking my sweet arse time with it. Also BRING BACK PROPER QUEST! BSF And new quest is ok… but it’s not my baby from the day.
Maybe from the restart of the story there are less armies, in time they will introduce them when they show in to the grand story, and we all know its all about selling, first sell all what they offer next give new armies. Still its stupid, there were many armies and many more to introduce, and they just destroyed the world :D I would like to see araby fe .
Get rid of Vamp Counts and bring back the classic 4th Ed Undead book lol where Necromancers were in control and not just some insignificant lower grade wizard as they became with Vamp Counts lol.
why would you want GW minatures for the Old World, there are so many miniatures available for any faction, either GW, 3d Printed, or other manufacturers, just make your own army! Heck You dont even need to use their rules, just play the lore!
I'd like to see the hafling soup catapult to come back
Throw that hot pot at ‘em, Boys!
My god I remember that lol. I remember seeing it in a 4th or 5th Ed army photo and always thought what ugly looking things they are 😂
It wasn't even around at the end. It's a stretch that GW cares that much.
A kislev vs chaos box would definitely be an instant purchase for me
Your cheeky 'hello' is fast becoming my favourite intro to a TH-cam video
I want more miniatures I can use in Warhammer Fantasy Role Play!
It seems we are early to the battlefield. Quick, set up the trebuchets while the enemy is unawares men. For Ze LADYYYYY!
I'm just looking forward to getting my large pile of old metal vampire counts painted up. Waiting to see how the dust settles!
@@Manlio.CipulloAoS is complicated?????
In which multiverse???
@@infinitedm5396 In the same universe where Maggotkin army has to count the contagion points every turn to summon and at same time has to count and roll for the disease point in two distinct phases maybe?
I am a Fantasy Battles nostalgic, but an active AoS collector. I'd love to see that Tzeentch army showcased, if you ever have the time!
I backed a kickstarter that is a "Bretonians" proxy army made entirely of Monty Python and the Holy Grail models, and I am very much thinking I'll have to make an actual army with them.
I have seen said KS and I look forward to seeing one fielded.
Not sure it will be that clear-cut as Night Goblins are going to be around (they mentioned Fanatics in the last article) but def useful to think of it that way.
they really messed up then when they added Beastmen to the old world😉
@@Yurt_enthusiast7 While I hope I'm wrong, I could see Beastmen losing AoS support Feb 2024 or at AoS 4.0 launch.
Plastic kits that rewind the scale creep a bit are my biggest hope. There's so much cool fantasy stuff in their back catalogue that would be fun to add to any game. A streamlined rule system that can attract players from TW would be a bonus, but I'd be surprised if they made any radical changes to the system. And YESSSSSS to re-releasing WHQ!
Rewind scale creep when they want to bump all the base sizes up? Lol. Wishful thinking at best
Get rid of Vampires and bring back the original Undead book.😂
I think more armies/factions will come, but will depend on how well it’s taken up, ie how much is sold and is financially viable
Have you heard about 9th Age Fantasy Battles? You can play all your 8th edition armies in that system, and it's very well balanced. Would be cool if more content creators talked about it.
How about the 6th ed community these days? Still alive?
ive never heard about that@@brightlight3520
I'm glad I watched this video because I did not see the Core Faction list and have been slowly making a vampire count army. I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens with them.
I'm certainly going to stockpile multiple Empire Militia boxes.
While other factions would instead have these slots filled by things like -
Undead (because your "Lord" is actually a Vampire Count from Sylvania - the "core" are the humans that live on his lands, but he summons undead to fight alongside them)
Chaos Beastmen or Demons (because your Lord has made a pact with the Chaos Gods - and either allies with a nearby Beastmen herd, or carries out rituals to summon Demons)
Dwarven Mercenaries (an engineer with cannons, some warriors, hammerers, etc)
Elves (like a unit of elven archers, or spearman, a Dragon Rider, maybe a chariot or knight unit)
Then overtime they'd add in armies like Orcs & Goblins, Skaven, Dark Elves & Chaos Dwarves that do not ally with humans and instead are external raiding parties taking advantage of the Empires instability/lack of proper leadership - which would not require any human troops, each would have their own unique Core troop choices.
I wonder how big the old world will be. GW burnt Warhammer fantasy playerbase horribly by the end time.
3D printing is clearly the answer for affordable WHB, I'm looking at the old world as a campaign pack and maybe a chance to get a reasonably priced big box army, we will see on that, but I dont expect too much and Warhammer Armies Project 9th edition is still out there, still free and glorious for anyone who wants to get into it
@@johnwhite9461 Do you me 9th age?
Also, when GW set out other games have step into void. THere like 4 new games not including 9th age.
@@randomusernameCallin no no I mean 9th edition, look up Warhammer Armies Project
There's Martha! Hi Martha!
Thank you for this video!!!!
I plan to play 6th ed beastmen, dwarves and empire
@5:30 Well in 6th we had at least 5 official army list for the Empire: Empire, Ulrick cult, Kislev, Lustria expedition, Crusader
I've forgot the Knight order army list with all order like Manann I think it was in a Citadel Journal written by Alesio Cavatore
Great content man. Subbed
I wonder if Kislev will be held back for release alongside chaos factions? That would fit more with the original lore in my opinion.
I feel your post-credits bit says it all for me. I would LOVE a new Warhammer Quest, having missed the old one entirely.
Warhammer Quest: Dungeons of the Old World would be awesome
I just want the minis to look like the ones from the 90s. Never gonna happen from what I’ve seen, everything shown so far just looks like Age of Sigmar to me.
I agree I got loads from 4th and 5th Ed era as well as some of the older minis. The early 90s minis had a charm and feel about them. Esp the bald Daemonettes with massive crab claws not like these modern ones. Got to love the original Greater Daemons of the 80s and early 90s.
Looking to get that sweet Tomb King range!
That is what I am looking for, to somehow recapture teh fun that Warhammer was, it that is at all possible without my old friend base, Games Workshop lock-ins and so on.❤❤
The "...hello." King on his throne 👑👑👑👑👑
My initial excitement for TOW has been gradually sapped away with the drip feed of information and the half hearted effort GW seem to be putting into the release. A setting of an Imperial civil war leading up to the Great War against Chaos felt like it would have lots of potential. Not to mention the original focus they had on Kislev. But it feels like the scope of the game has been severely limited since the original announcement. As a Bretonnian player I'm still happy to be able to get "new" models instead of ebay.
I wonder if GW is looking at Old World as a replacement for the Horus Heresy novels and this is a jumping on point.
They brought it back, but it isn't the same. If you like modern WOTC type RPGs, you may like it.
I’m pretty stoked about this release. Fingers crossed GW don’t cock this up with supply & support issues - I know they will…
Jordan, what are your predictions regarding how GW might treat updating the Old World games system? I got into MESBG not only because of LotR but because it is such a stable and thus cheap and predictable system. But I did always find the old Warhammer stuff very tantalising, so my interest is piqued despite the misgivings I have about expecting what looks like a constant update churn to a 40k/AoS outsider. Would be curious to hear your thoughts, thank you.
GW support, at the moment, is very very poor.
The pattern is the following:
- big release time.
- Repeat a few time from step one
- Suddenly, whether or not the game just has been updated for every faction, GW release a new edition or merge the game with another one.
There are just too many cool models from other companies nowadays as well as secondhand for me to bother getting excited for whatever GW decides to release.
Other companies credit their sculptors too.
I love Warhammer but there are too many reasons at this point for me not to care as much as I would like about the release of the old world.
I was hoping for something akin to 5th or 6th ed WFB but I'm keeping an open mind. Breaking up magic into the other phases is OK, I guess
I was thinking 4th and 5th Ed. Bring back the magic cards lol. I left the hobby by the start of 6th Ed so cannot relate to it. Came back to the game at the end of 7th Ed and wasn't a fan. To me 4th and 5th are my faves.
Pet that kitty!
You can talk and pet the kitty, you know?!
As much as I hate Skaven, they did make for good villains. Not adding them and Vampires but including Elves and Tomb Kings was an odd decision to me.
Great stuff as always, thanks Jordan. I’m so excited for The Old World!
Just FYI, “internecine” is pronounced like “inter knee sign”
Thanks for this! I don’t think I’d ever heard it out loud so have been happily mispronouncing it all this time - good to learn the correct way finally!
Love your content dude keep it up!!!
Need dark elves, skaven and vampires. Lizardmen would be good too.
@@johnmiddleton4291 Nope that wasn't it. They were Norscans and they weren't fighting vampires.
Why is that Cat staring at you 😂😂😂
I really appreciate your passion Jordan.
Doubt it'll be a 3 year cycle. Their specialist games (which this will be) aren't on a 3 year cycle.
Where's Martha? I hope you're having a fun adventure, Martha :)
What do i want?
Easy to reading retain rules. Pdf starter lists (modern Ravenous hordes)
Cool books focusing on narrative "historical" events. Maybe a vampire wars book one day.
O and halflings back in the empire army. In fact, I'll settle for just Halflings.
Now into miniatures... not bothered......the 3d StL sculptor community is sooo big and amazing you can get anything and if not then wait for someone to scan it.
It's a shame the Vampire Counts won't come in until they conver the Vampire Wars.
Remember:
*Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!*
(Habakkuk 2:12)
I'm most looking forward to people to play with. GW said my Lizardmen will have rules, so that's good enough for me.
Am I the only one finding the sound on this video very low?
Expedition lustria or rise of the skaven sound like great campaign books to me
You should slapped down 4th or 5th Ed WHFB. It was an official GW product 😂.
The different bases are annoying. Hope you can get some trays to slot round bases into if neessary.
Please bring new army's to old world . Fantasy.
You and i are thinking almost entirely alike on this matter.
It is going to be amazing no matter what. The Old World is back! 🙌🏻
Thanks for the video
No, it's not
Supplemental regions
Maybe from the restart of the story there are less armies, in time they will introduce them when they show in to the grand story, and we all know its all about selling, first sell all what they offer next give new armies. Still its stupid, there were many armies and many more to introduce, and they just destroyed the world :D I would like to see araby fe .
Get rid of Vamp Counts and bring back the classic 4th Ed Undead book lol where Necromancers were in control and not just some insignificant lower grade wizard as they became with Vamp Counts lol.
Looking at GW games today it's not hard to predict, any earlier editions will be better.
Strange request. Can you raise your mic volume a fair bit?? Adverts come on and volume is much louder than your show.
Did you call your cat Martha in case Batman comes after you someday?
It’s all part of the plan
😂😂😂 where are the Vampire Counts 😂😂😂 🔥 🔥 🔥
why would you want GW minatures for the Old World, there are so many miniatures available for any faction, either GW, 3d Printed, or other manufacturers, just make your own army!
Heck You dont even need to use their rules, just play the lore!
