Installing an awning onto a cargo trailer

  • In this video, my cousin and I work through installing a 16' pull out awning, onto the side of my 24' cargo trailer. The ceiling height is 6'6" and there was some early concern this was too short. It isn't. It works great.
    The awning was purchased from an RV supplier in MI but they can be found online or at your local RV store/supply. They can be purchased in different lengths and with different color fabric. My trailer is white so I wasn't picky.
    Was it worth the expense and effort? Oh Yes. You don't find many trees in the middle of the pits at your local track. I love it.
    With the exception of the into and outro all of the footage was shot at the end of November 2019. Special thanks to my cousin T for the help and confidence that we could do it. You can find him on YT at Terry2theGremlin

    Good video! I've been wanting to add an awning to my cargo trailer ever since I bought it, almost 3 years ago. I'll be saving this video to reference again when that day comes.

    Just picked up a 25ft like this to travel with my bikes and now the awning seems a great idea and seeing it done helps 👌🏻😊

    The Torx Bit thing got me too, I oculd not figure that one until I tried my square bit, worked perfect.

    Good job. I am doing the same thing on my toy hauler. ( Not enough room over the door. I am cutting down a 20' awning to 13' to fit my trailer. (It was donated from a retired trailer It's 2 years old, and was used twice. Still in excellent condition.)
    My question was the distance from the channel and the verticle rails.
    I think I'll just install the channel, then decide. I think he said 2.5". That's what I'm trying to figure out. If I leave the channel a little long, so be it.
    I have to cut the tube down, and re-sew one side.
    Thanks again for the visual. I hope mine comes out as nice.

    No sealant at the screw holes? Water will find its way in there.

    If I can remember it took us only about an hour to a hour and a half to actually put up the awning if I'm not mistaken Great video cousin

    Great how to video! I installed my awning so it was over my side door, not beside it like yours. I use my trailer for camping and benefit of awning over the side door is when it’s raining u stay dry exiting your trailer.

      I would have liked to go over the door, but as the ceiling height is low, there was not enough room. Cheers. ~P

      I was wondering how much room you need from the top of the door to the roof?

    Did u use self tapping screws for the awning struts or bolts with nuts?

    You could spray that metal with Boeshield T-9 but I would clean it with WD-40 and a scrub pad first. The T-9 will stop the condensation from causing rust.

    Good work... Just curious would the awning have fit over the door?. Im planning on doing same for my 20 ft cargo trailer

    • @sbirdranch
      @sbirdranch  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not in my case. The awning when deployed has slope. That slope prevents the door from opening. If you have a taller sidewall trailer it would work. In my case the door goes to within a few inches of the roof.

    • @zj4041
      @zj4041 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sbirdranch same here I have a few inches..I doubt it will clear awning open or even close it might be too close.... Another question: on vertical beams #10 screws seem sufficient... But some manufactures recommending #12 or #14... But this seems too large of a screw for thin wall square tube vertical beams

      This is the real hurdle to my awning install also, and our trailer is only 12' so there's not much length to cover past the door. I saw someone install a small cart wheel to the sharp edge of their door though... so it doesn't only cover the sharp edge, but reduces friction as the door rolls past the canvass. I'm seriously thinking about going for it.
      This video is super helpful and I'm saving it for reference, thank you so much! I have a couple of videos posted of my "Honeycomb Hideout" if you wanna check it out. It's come a LONG way over the past two years though and I need to post an update. Thanks again and happy camping from Texas ❤

    We are adding a manual RecPro awning to our cargo trailer.. it has the same type of upper mounting bracket. Any idea why there’s so much space in that bracket between the bolt head and the trailer? Just doesn’t make sense to us why it’s exposed like that when they could have built a flush to trailer type mount or at least had it concealed in a way.

    • @sbirdranch
      @sbirdranch  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it has more to do with being able to mount it to different rigs. For instance, on aluminum clad RV's with horizontal ribs, this gap spans the rib. You don't have a flush location. It is an interesting question.

      There are a couple of RV surplus places in Southern Michigan. They had several different brands and parts. I think it was Bontrager's Surplus where I finally settled on it. ~P

    Would there have been enough clearance to have installed the awning over the door, if you had wanted?

    • @sbirdranch
      @sbirdranch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is not on this roof height trailer. You also have to consider the awning, when open, slants down and you need room to open and close the door when it swings out. Good question though. ~P

      Was thinking of adding a roller to the top of door if it is to low. Just don't know how much room is needed from roof to door?

    This is the best video I found, I will be doing it solo. I am debating installing over the door, but two problems arise, square door clearing awning and holdback clip may be useless as arm will be in the way. One thing, I could do without the cheesy background music, just a distraction- must be getting old!

    • @sbirdranch
      @sbirdranch  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Best of luck on the install. I'll keep the comment about cheesy background music in mind. I weld better than I edit...Hmmm re-listening....I like the tune but a little too much. Agreed. ~P.

    I can’t believe that it took 3 of you to put this together. I installed a 20 footer by myself and yes it took me a day and a 3 more hours next day but I got it done.
