Building my Micro Petrel Dinghi

- The first time I tried the stich and glue method to build a small boat - in fact the first time I built a boat by myself. This is no "how to" video, just some video footage from the building process. The boat was designed by Sam Devlin and I recommend his boat building videos on youtube.
The boat served as a tender to my sailing boat for some years and meanwhile has a new owner.
Construction plans are available from Sam Devlin only. I bought the plans from him as a personal copy and I will not resell them. This is where you get the plans:

Sensual craftsmanship. Work is love made visible.
Also, alle Achtung, meinen Respekt hast du!
👍 Thanks for uploading!
That is NOT a boat.....
IT'S A WORK OF FREAKING ART!!!!
Lovely to see the skills used in that build. A nice looking craft at the end of it.
Thank you.
Neider....
Wirklich sehr schöne Arbeit, Hut ab!
Danke schön, für die freundlichen Worte.
Ulrich Koch such a beautiful boat!! BRAVO!
Thank you.
What a fantastic job. That boat is an absolute beauty 😍👌
Thank you very much.
I'M an absolute beauty.
Que medidas tiene ese bote tan bonito!!!?
Beautiful looking little boat, i would like one myself.
WOW! Stunning result, well done!
Thank you. I still love this little boat.
She's a beauty. I'm jealous.
:-)
Szuper munka ,Alkotás!..
Danke!
Well put together video and beautiful dinghy, especially love the floor....thanks for the upload.
he visto mucho, pero esto es lo mejor que he visto.
Gracias. Demasiado del honor - zuviel der Ehre.
Beautiful project! I especially love the flooring touch. But those are the thickest knees I've ever seen! xD
Thank you. You are absolutely right about those knees. To be honest - the plan was imperial, not metric and so I made a little "misinterpretation". I then decided it was not too bad because the knees serve as a very strong supports when the boat is attached to the davits outboard. It its sometimes very rough when sailing the coastal waters (Atlantic Ocean, Netherlands and German coast).
Man that’s sweet. A work of art
I'm speechless, this is amazing work. GREAT JOB!!!
Such a cute and very well built Dingy!
work of art, beautiful, mick from uk

"Great work! Boat as a sweetie :))" --> Thank you very much!
Great job. Thanks for sharing!
Very nice job
Hermoso, hermoso.....congratulaciones...good job..saludos desde Chile.
Thank you!
Very nice boat....i want build also this. How much ticknes plywood? 10mm or 8 mm?
Great boat!
Thank you very much.
Well done !
Lovely boat and video, although non-removable floorboards can be a problem if you ever need to do hull (or floorboard) repairs or clean up after a messy spill.
I remember the moment looking at the clearly visible glass fibre braid on the floor of my finished boat. I did not like the appearance and the right amount of mahogany scrap was at hand. Mistake, perhaps. And yes, you are absolutely right about the trouble any repair of this area will cause. (When not in use the dinghy will travel underneath a canvas coverage)-
Classic Creation !
Very, very beautiful.
Thank you very much.
Beautiful
ausgezeichnet, mein Herr !!!
Danke für das Lob.
It's a wow. I love it and wanted to build one. Hope you don't mind sharing the specs and how to :)
Thank you very much. I think it is probably not a "how to" in every detail - it was not meant to be because I am not a professional. Sam Devlin did it in his stitch and glue instructional videos.
Well searching for Sam Devlin on TH-cam doesn't seem to bring up much, other than other people with his boats.
Good thing there's no link, we might find him that way
Maybe the reason is that YT is no search engine but a video platform. 😉
@@vonhier I guess I'll keep trying later. Using Chrome on a phone, closest I found is Shed Videos apparently has one. Cross referencing with Sam Devlin's website, it looks like the same guy. That's searching Sam Devlin boats TH-cam, and Sam Devlin TH-cam.
Lots of results for Sam Devlin boats youtube, but it's not his videos apparently, it's other people building his designs. Like I said the one video he might be in is posted by Shed videos. On Chrome your video actually popped up fairly early. But nothing from him yet.
Beautiful boat! Is there any chans to get the buildingplans for it somewhere?
Thank you. I bought the plans from Sam Devlin devlinboat.com/
Wow, beautiful....but that is a very heavy dinghy with those big knees, heavy seats, and floor boards.
Thank you. You are right about those knees. The reason - the plan was imperial, not metric and so I made a little "misinterpretation". I then decided it was not a fault but a feature because the knees serve as a very strong supports when the boat is attached to the davits. It its sometimes very rough when sailing the coastal waters (Atlantic Ocean, Netherlands and German coast). The floor boards however are rather light weight - same as the mahogany seats.
It looks like a Mirror Dinghy. You could have not put the ventilation at the stern you you could use it as built in buoyancy. Nice looking dinghy.
Don't tell anyone: Ventilation louver is decoration only. There is in fact a built in buoyancy body underneath - this is (in a way) mandatory item of the boat plans designed by Sam Devlin. You are the first to notice!
@@vonhier I see, sneaking. Thanks for the reply.
Very nice!
Could you post a link to the site for this boat? I have looked for it and I can't find the right site for this boat.
This is Devlinboats: www.devlinkits.com/index.php/hikashop-menu-for-categories-listing/category/17-micro-petrel - (My own boat is for sale now, but has no site. :-)
Can i get the plan please??? I really liked it and want To try it. Good job man :)
Nice boat
great job, where can I get a boat drawing?
Sam Devlin, Devlinboat.com, Design is called "micro petrel"
, Thank you, but paid options are not interesting to me.
Thanks.
What Legend 27 said again!!!!
Thank you.
Belo Serviço.
beautiful.
a piece of art
Your comment makes me smile. :-)
What kind of stain was used on the exposed wood grain?
Epifanes Mono-Urethane
BRAVO !! AMAZING
Thank you!
Beautiful workmanship! I'd put it on display, not in the water!
I must admit that I love to row it. But when the dogs embark this tiny boat for a shore leave I always tell them to behave.
Very good
Thank you!
Lovely 👍🏻
Danke.
Hi Im Israfil from Bangladesh.
Nice .but what you do mix for glue please say that details.
make the glue product name, please please please.......................
Hi, I used West Epoxy Resin No 105 und West Epoxy Hardener No. 205. (If you want the epoxy to cure slowly you may use hardener No. 206). To make a sticky glue from the resin you have to add Microfibers West System No. 403. Greetings from Germany by Ulrich
Herzlichen Dank!
Sehr cool!
Vielen Dank!
Very nice boat !
What is the final weight ?
She was designed to weigh 28,5kg or 63lbs - since I added planks and stronger gunwales it must be something like 32kg / 70 lbs. I never checked exactly.
For one man only or does it take even 2 men ?
2 persons - max 140kg - we use it as a dinghi inside harbour areas (Netherlands and Baltic Sea)
@@vonhier it's nice but looks heavy, did you clear coat the floorboards ?
@@colstace2560 No I did not. The boat is about 10 percent heavier than given by the original plans. I better keep my diet.
Danke. Ich brauchte damals ein kleines Beiboot. Die Pläne habe ich bei www.devlinboats.com gekauft.
Its posible to made a simple plans on this boat?
it is 6mm Brynzeel Plywood (see 02:24). Plans available by Sam Devlin, only.
@@vonhier ok....no problem to buy these plans?
@@vadimlazarov6292 no problem. (see video description.)
Excellent.
Thank you!
Did you consider pre-glassing the panels before stitching?
Saves a lot of time. Nice job
This was my first glassing experience ever. Pre-glassing must be time saving, I agree. I will give it a try next time. Thanks.
Śliczna łódeczka
Danke.
where I can get the plan?
www.devlinboat.com
Hi Leute! Kann man da einen Plan bekommen? Evtl. einen auch mit Segel?
Hallo.
Hallo.
Die Engländer sagen entschuldigend: "It is not a bug - it is a feature"

She was designed to weigh 28,5kg or 63lbs - since I added planks and stronger gunwales it must be something like 32kg / 70 lbs. I never checked exactly.
not bad
Spasibo!
I agree! Weight is always a critical item. This little boat is hanging outside my yacht all year long - no need to lift it up onto the roof of a car or into a van.
Sorry, my software does not translate your question correctly.
hey would you like my project????
Already bored
Yes. Woodworking ain't easy. And in some cases not even easy to follow.
