    Could you talk about onboard audio for the motherboards? Most people who are getting $100 motherboards aren't getting sound cards, so onboard audio will have to suffice.

    • @husky1993a
      @husky1993a 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Most onboard audio solutions on modern motherboards are perfectly fine for most people.

    • @ackables
      @ackables 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      But I want my onboard audio to be separated from outside signals to get pure audio

    • @husky1993a
      @husky1993a 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see. What I did personally was I bought a cheap $50 USB DAC. Biggest reason was so I can use my Rockit 5 speakers with RCA cables :)

    • @Bananahead88
      @Bananahead88 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Basically it goes like this: If you have a modern day standard mobo, its onboard audio is much better than most people think, onboard audio > cheap audiocard.

    I disagree with the USB part. I can easily use 7 or 8 at a time so I'm sure there are people who can use 10.

    • @IrgendEineZecke
      @IrgendEineZecke 9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      But not 7 to 8 USB 3.0.
      I am pretty sure that in the most cases USB 2.0 was enough for you.

    • @StealthSecrecy
      @StealthSecrecy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd be curious to know how in the world you have 8 usb devices to use at once..
      1.Keyboard
      2.Keyboard passthrough
      3.Mouse
      4.Hard drive
      5.wifi adapter
      Unless you have a bunch of those usb toys from think geek, which you should probably use a hub for.

      1. keyboard
      2. mouse
      3. printer
      4. scanner
      5. flight stick (HOTAS)
      6. throttle (HOTAS)
      7. USB stick
      Yep, 7. And with only one (no. 7) of them it makes any sense at all to be using USB 3.0
      And then there are USB phone chargers, USB audio devices like headphones or speakers that some people use, game controllers, etc.

    AsRock mobos are underrated. Built my first ever PC with an ASrock Z77 pro 4 and it was about £75 with cross fire and sli compatibility. Really nice board. Hasn't let me down and the OC menu and bios is simple and effective

      What I've heard is that AsRock boards are good, but their customer support is "Fuck you, talk to the vendor". So I'm really scared to buy anything from them.

    • @DeLawrence97
      @DeLawrence97 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      ASRock is a really solid brand these days. They offer a good balance between price and features.
      I have an 990FX Killer board, and despite being somehow underrated on the internet as having hot VRM, high failrate, it's been running OCed for 6 months now and it's really really stable. I never encountered a BSOD caused by drivers(in fact, i never got random BSODs, i had some when overclocking, which is normal if the settings were not correct), all the features are working as intended.
      Now the marketing part(Killer NIC and Purity Sound) are ok, but they shouldn't be the reason to buy a motherboard.
      Looking at the visual features Luke presented in this video, you can clearly see that the ASRock board has all the things you would want from a "budget board".
      I'm really pleased with ASRock's products. I don't know about their customer service since i haven't needed it yet. All the info i needed is well structured on their website, guides on BIOS upgrading, drivers installing and troubleshooting are also their. In a way, it feels like they were a sub-division for ASUS in the past.

      4 IR3553 is better than 12(x3) D-PAK MOSFETs by a large margin.With that said,however,the Gigabyte one clearly is the loser here because they are only using SiRA12s,nowhere amazing stuff.The Asrock however,uses TI NexFETs which is much better,while having more phases.Teh Asus likely uses some LF-PAK thing.

    Where does Luke get off just growing facial hair like that? Everybody knows that if you want to grow a mustache you have to leave for a short period of time, and then suddenly return with full mutton-chops, acting completely nonchalant as if you've had them the whole time. I think this might be something that should be settled on the forums.

    I wish you guys made a mobo quality comparison, as in how good and reliable are a given manufacturer's motherboards. The quality of the capacitors, the soldering, thermal compounds under heat spreaders, durability of any plastic materials, contacts, pins and their gold coating or whatever, how much voltage the circuitry, power section and chips can take, how many faulty units are being sold - that sorts of stuff. We all have our own opinions on certain manufacturers, they're mostly results of years of experience with mobos, but it's finally time to back them up with some legitimate tests. Sadly, it's not gonna happen, that would've been too time consuming, too expensive, since that kinda requires damaging a few recent identical motherboards or finally impossible in case of certain components.

    - number and location of fan slots
    - location of PCIe additional power (sometimes its in a weird spot in the middle of the board.... wtf c_c )

    I'd love for them to do a comparison like this for AMD am3+ boards. From what I've heard and experienced a good am3+ board can either give you an incredible overclocking experience, or kneecap you really quick.
    More AMD content in general would be kinda nice. At lower price points like i3s and such they normally win, and with better threading support on next gen games we may see FX cpus get life breathed into them again.
    Crysis 3 was a great example of a game that really used FX processors well. All 6 cores used and balanced very well. If I remember correctly the FX 6350 actually scored higher in benchmarks with crysis 3 than some i5s.
    Anyway, I know Intel is overall better, but just a little bit of content focused on us guys still stuck with the am3+ and fm sockets would be nice. =]
    Keep up the good work Linus!

    PLEASE, take note!
    I heard that the Gigabyte Z97 mobos have voltage delivery issues regarding the i7 4790K CPUs. I don't know if this issue affects all Z97 GA mobos, but the majority of people (including me) had this problem with the Z97X-UD5H model.
    The issue basically is that with the default settings in the BIOS, CPU receives cca 1.4V when in BIOS. Once the Turbo Boost kicks in, the frequency goes up to 4.4GHz but the voltage is again set to 1.4V+ which makes the CPU very hot (getting 80C+ within seconds). Random PC reboots without BSOD will occur as a result of overheating (even with aftermarket coolers, such as NH-U14S). This problem was solved for me with flashing the BIOS to the newest version (F8 for the UD5H). Just look for the one with the caption "Improve Intel K-sku CPU performance".
    Cheers! Happy shopping :)

  • @kainhall
    @kainhall 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    ya... i dont like MSI any more.
    my 1090t at 4ghz makes my VRM get WAY to hot....its not out of spec, but its the hottest part in my system.
    and MSI has a history of using shit VRM components on their boards. (on a list of ALL failed AMD mobos, MSI toped the chart for VRM failure)
    "oh, will you just hate MSI".... no, i dont.... i built 20 computers with MSI mobos... and i run a MSI lightning 6970 and an MSI mobo personally....
    but i dont like the fan controls (unless you boot up control center EVERY time... your fan speeds will re-set. and the BIOS controls dont work right...
    also... under load my voltages go up by .2 volts.... so overclocking is hard unless you want to feed it .2 extra volts when shit gets real.

    The amount of time spent advertising the youtube channel itself, the forum, the amazon kick back and the sponsors is just too much.
    I get that you need to do all of that, and I don't think you should stop. But TWO full minutes at the end of the video, of an only 8 minute long video, had nothing to do with the video itself. Advertising and being completely off topic for 25% of the video? That's a bit lame.

  • @Pholiage

    You should add comparison for "older" sockets. If future proof is a factor in this showdown you should show what you gain in terms of performance. Is it worth the $300 to upgrade to z97 or X99 from a X58 board. I still use a X58 with i7 930 and there is no point for me to upgrade since I barely gain any performance in gaming (where my interest lies) and is more than efficient for image editing that I do from time to time. If all boards with z97 are practically identical apart from manufacturer I don't see the point in this?

    I understand that a lot of people like seeing affordable content, and that is definitely a good thing because it'll actually relate to the typical consumer's purchase plans... but I really enjoy this channel largely because it shows the upper end, and the beautiful eye-candy pieces that I meticulously count my pennies for. I have absolutely loved marveling at the best that consumer grade technology had to offer, and I'm really missing that experience with these last few videos and with the path that Linus is expressing the channel will likely take. Maybe it's time for Linus to continue with the high end, and another employee such as Taran, who has shot already many a video on Techquickie before, to step up and take over the affordable end of things in his spare time after editing or in the few minutes he wastes rendering things.

    Ho i made a "future proof" computer back in 2k9 and I am still using it today. But what is future proof ? For me it is basically a motherboard with 4 sata minimum,4 ram slots,and over clock ability with a unlocked processor that is able to handle correctly video cards ,and finally a good psu.
    So I took in 2k9 a p55m ud2 with a i5 750 ,a gts 450 and 2 gig of ram,it was in a horrible office case that had IDE hdd.and I took a seasonic fixed speed psu,750w by the way.
    Nowday it has 8gig of ram , a 4.4ghz oc (instead of 2.6) thx to a 212 evo,a gtx 780 ,a new z3 case,2 seagate hdd with a ssd.and the psu had a pwm fan mod to silence it.
    The only problem was the fan speed in bios that had to be changed with speedfan because the bios was to old for fancy coolers and was sounding like a plane when booting. But I'm happy with my "old" rig. But I reconise now intel kinda disappoint me on the oc side with their k serries instead of releasing low end unlocked cpu (outside the g3258).

    Just bought a Asrock OC Formula Z97M board last week on newegg for $115 with rebate. Seeing as i only want to run dual 980s in sli, I have no need for the more expensive boards running the plx chip, nor do i need extra pci/e slots. And even though this is a matx board, the cards wont be suffocated because they'll be liquid cooled. Overall this board seems to have an excellent setup for my specs.

I would really love to see a super low end board series from you, where you take some offerings from gigabyte, asrock, biostar, and others and do a comparison focusing mainly on FM2 or AM3 because a lot of the best value chips are AMD right now.

    I need to be absolutely frank with you, every time I see that you are doing a video alone I don't feel like watching it. Not that the subject is not relevant or not well explained, far from that. The problem is your "old teacher-like" posture, trying to be 'serious' talking about serious stuff. You and Linus together work so well in the WAN show because you guys act is a goofy way and you laughing all the time makes all the difference. Apparently, what attracts in Linus, Jay2cents, Eli the computer guy and that other famous geek guy (who in the recent past had a child, is married and makes videoblogs, I forgot now his name) is exactly the sense of humor or "weirdness" when talking about important stuff. Well, that is my opinion.
    Another thing - you have an interesting voice. If you worked it a bit, and lowered the tone just a bit, could make money out of it maybe with dubbing or makeover work.

  • @EmilWilkensRC
    @EmilWilkensRC 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    One of the features i look for when buying a MB, is also the implementation of the sound card! Not everyone wants to have an ekstra ugly piece of hardware showing In their system, and as a non-professionel music enthusiast like me, i find it sufficient when a separate part of the PCB is used for the sound processing only. That is one of the reasons why i find the $200 mark, the sweetspot for my builds.
    Would be nice to se how the "cheaper" boards holds up compared to the more ekspensive one, in regards to; Sound quality, CPU overvclocking capabilities, ram support and ram OC, ssd speed's (i had boards In the past where i could not get full speed from my ssd's on some of the sata controlers), long jevity from the use of better components etc! :)

    When you get these boards, do the companies allow you to so some minor disassembly? it would be great if motherboard reviews also included the number of power phases, as well as the VRM model number so that users can look up data sheets. The largest area where value boards differ, is with the VRM design. some will use a 4+1 phase design with cheap components which pretty much top out at 120 watts, thus when you go to overclock, you quickly run into stability issues, or VRM protection throttling. while there are some value boards with a VRM design where on paper, will handle a sustained output of of well over 200 watts
