The guys talking about how that Jingle Bell Rock performance would never happen in highschool while I remember what the girls in my class did one year... And yes, the people watching it at the time did almost die of cringe. How our teacher ok'd it was beyond me.
@@dubbingsync So in my school we had class assemblies sometimes, where individual classes would put on little performances (tbh, the biggest reason we all looked forward to these was because it meant we didn't have morning classes that day). My class had to do a thing about art. I honestly don't remember what my role was, I think I had to point at a map or something. Anyway, some of the girls in my class, who in retrospect kind of were Mean Girls, decided to dance. The catch, was that nobody was allowed to see it until the day of the assembly. 9:43- Speaking from my high school experience, a gross performance like this with minors being allowed is sadly 100% realistic. For the first two years or so at my school, we had to sit through a X-Mas concert before the holiday break with students in similar costumes (skirts included) doing a provocative dance while singing "Santa Baby". Yes, this happened TWICE. It made me uncomfortable even as a hormonal straight teenage boy, and I've loathed the song ever since.
This is true from my hs experience too, but my experiences were from the dance and cheer teams (which I was on). For our homecoming halftime routine, we did a really gross/provocative performance that a lot of the girls were actually uncomfortable with, but were pressured to do so by our coach regardless. The school actually got a lot of angry phone calls from parents who went, and our coach brushed them off as being “too close minded” when really, they were reasonably concerned about us literal MINORS “dancing” in ways that were not appropriate for our age AT ALL
@@estinaviv My condolences. This is why I'm similarly against those provocative child dance competitions (Ex- Toddlers & Tiaras) and the traditional rules of school dances (dresses & suits, romantic atmosphere & music, facilitating peer pressure among minors to get dates or lose their virginity, etc.). It's just not necessary. There's nothing wrong with school dances as an event, of course. I mostly enjoyed mine. But adults KNOW damn well that certain elements of these traditions encourage (intentionally or not) a culture of teenagers feeling like they're "missing out" or "aren't grown up enough" if they don't get asked or ask someone (typically a crush). I had those anxieties in my 9th & 10th grade Homecomings. I bought into all that crap from films & TV that getting a girl, getting laid, and basically having a Disney fairy tale/Sixteen Candles/Dirty Dancing-type experience were all rites of passage. That's just what we grew up seeing/hearing. You had to check those boxes before college. Romantic teen comedies contributed a lot to it, but those societal conventions have existed for centuries. So many kids may act cool and above all that, but a lot of us still felt insecure about those things. I can only imagine how bad it was for popular kids (not that I was unpopular, but I was no John Travolta "stud" either). If you didn't achieve all of these things, you were inadequate, a loser, a nerd/geek, etc. (I proudly identify as a nerd today, and I had two girlfriends, the second of which I gave my virginity to). I heard countless parents criticize teen pregnancies, especially at Prom, wondering "Oh, why does this keep happening more and more?" Even back then, I'd think: REALLY? You don't know why? You pressure us to dress like princes & princesses, with slow dances and mood lighting. Our media glamorizes underage pregnancy with "reality" series like Teen Mom that advertise themselves as cautionary tales but make these girls into celebrities for being knocked up. You know a number of these hormonal kids sneak alcohol into these events, usually by spiking the punch (I unknowingly drank some at Prom and was nauseous for most of the night afterward). What do you think is going to realistically happen? We wouldn't follow many of these traditions to begin with if it wasn't required by you. Were it up to me, I'd approach these events like Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. Quoted: "It's a dance. So, dance!" Don't worry about dating, virginity, dressing fancy (unless you want to), or being cool. You're still children. You're allowed to enjoy being kids while you still can. Just have FUN and make memories with your friends.
