I’m a pianist and I still remember the first time I performed this with a cellist friend. We had already performed the Grieg cello sonata, and this was so different! This felt like true chamber music, the close give and take between the two instruments was so inspiring, at times you really felt as if you were inside the music together. The Grieg had a much more pianistic accompaniment, great fun to play, but it always felt like piano AND cello. This Brahms sonata felt much more like cello WITH piano, the two parts inextricably forming a much more intimate and greater whole.
When I learned this sonata as a young cello student, I was always happy that I didn't have to play the piano part- which i considered more difficult than the cello part. My teacher did a wonderful job though, playing the piano and stopping when she wasn't happy with my performance.

@@biancapelzer6016 I also play the piano and the cello, and I often accompany some friend on the piano, and what is really difficult (to me at least) is that you have to know the melody that the cello ( or any other instruments) is playing even more than you own part. And piano is more difficult to sight read as it's a vertical and horizontal sight reading vs. only horizontal sight reading. You must have a certain level to play with other with the piano vs. Others instrument where you play as ensemble from the beginning. That's only my point of view on the question, i wish a nice day to anyone reading this haha!

This work is one of the beautiful masterpieces of Brahms.. full of passion, sadness, happiness..ecc. He knew his instruments his counterpoint is magnificent. I love Brahms.

It's like a mature tragedy, it's not as flashy or grandiose compare to other romantique masterpiece because it doesn't have to be. "Melancolie" would be the right Word I think.

This is the only edition I've ever seen that has an A natural rather than A-flat there. It may be a misprint--or maybe there is a good reason the editors felt the first iteration of this phrase contains A natural (and therefore alters the basic intervallic structure of the main theme). Every other edition that I have checked has an A-flat there, and every cellist that I have ever played this with (I am a pianist) has played an A-flat. I also don't believe I've ever heard a recording with A natural.

Idk I’m not that skilled but that’s what I know from my knowledge. Same goes for other strings if you have an A on g string alto clef would make it an E on d string since it’s exactly a string apart or like 3 or 4 notes apart
