  • This reading from the 2018 Winter Retreat marks the first of twelve readings from Stillness Flowing: The Life and Teachings of Ajahn Chah.
Here, Luang Por Pasanno starts us off with Chapter 8, "From Distant Lands". The selection gives a short historical background of Western presence in Thailand and describes the different ways Westerners were viewed by the Thai people over time, along with the impact they had on Thai culture. The focus then shifts to Ajahn Chah's simple method of teaching that benefitted the foreigners who often couldn't speak the Isan and Thai languages. We are then introduced to Ajahn Chah's first western disciple, Ajahn Sumedho.
In the following discussion, Luang Por Pasanno answers questions such as: Did he remember his first teaching? What drew him to Ajahn Chah?
This reading was offered on February 18, 2018, at Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery.
