PSA!!! Secretariat was faster than Seattle Slew, Man o' War, and Spectacular Bid. Last year marked 50 years since he set records in all 3 Triple Crown events. All 3 records still stand today. His son Risen Star won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. At the time Risen Star won, his time in the Belmont was second only to his sire Secretariat. Risen Star's time is currently the 4th fastest Belmont of all time. Secretariat's grandson A.P. Indy (son of Seattle Slew) is tied for 2nd fastest currently, with Easy Goer also being second to Secretariat. Easy Goer resided in Secretariat famous Stall 1 at Claibourn after Secretariat passed on. Also remember that Secretariat ran a distant last in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness before circling the field and driving to the front in the middle of the track. He had to cover a lot more ground going 4 horses deep to set these records. In the Belmont, he took an early run to the front and set not only the track and Belmont Stakes record, but the US and World records for the 1 1/2 mile dirt distance. He unofficially set further distance records with Ron Turcotte standing in the irons to slow him down. One fact that people forget is that he set the Belmont Stakes record in 90 degree weather with 100% humidity and he was only lightly sweating where the leather touched him. 1 hour after the Belmont, there was a ground shaking thunderstorm, punctuating the significant day. 2MM thoroughbreds have been born since Secretariat raced and none have been able to beat his times or his beauty. @@daemonember Secretariat did in fact have the largest heart every found in any horse of any breed. Sham, his 1st cousin, had the second largest at 18 pounds. Secretariat's heart was about 2.5 times larger than the average TB heart and 30% larger than a draft horse heart. He also had super-sized lungs to help feed that heart. His girth strap had to be custom made, his chest was larger than draft horses. An additional advantage was he was left footed on a left turn track system. So, like in the Preakness, he could speed up on tight turns while other horses are slowing down for the turns. He also had a short back and was short coupled, so he could really get his back legs under him and propel himself powerfully forward with his massive hind quarters. The Bold Ruler sloped coup also added to his speed in that his hind legs could get further under him for more thrust potential. Also, his hind legs worked more in tandem than most horses, increasing his power. I see this in other top runners like Arrogate and Flightline (who is a double Secretariat descendant). One additional advantage is that Secretariat had the very rare double suspension transverse gate. He had 2 flight phases instead of one and horses are fastest in the air. So, he ran more like a cheetah than a horse, Justify (another double Secretariat descendant) had this same gait. Secretariat also dropped down when he was looking for speed. He became a guided missile. Only the legs and head moved. His body was stationary. Grandson A.P. Indy inherited this drop-down style of running.

Just so you know... Secretariat remains the fastest horse in history. Bear with me, though i like ve them, I know nothing about breeding horses (lions are a different story!). If Gracie's test showed everything is thankfully fine, could there have been an issue with Beyonce's embryo that caused Seven's early delivery? @@Sandstorm89483 I think it depends on how you look at it. She reached a higher speed at one point during a race but wasn’t able to maintain it. @@Sandstorm89483 She achieved the fastest speed for a TB but it was a short distance. She is still alive, but we don't hear much about her. I have to wonder if something was involved. More research is required. The classis are much longer races, and they are not usually meant to be sprinted. Secretariat sped up in each 1/4 mile in the Derby and ran each 1/4 faster than the previous quarter. This NEVER happens with horses. They slow down at the end, not speed up. Additionally, in the Belmont, his half mile time was even faster than his Derby split. This also never happens at the Belmont distance. Had he used his 3-year-old speed in a short race, his speed might have been blistering. Quarter horses have faster initial speed to TBs, but like the name, that speed is only good for 1/4 mile.
