I meant this human being back in the late 80s and he is one of the coolest dudes on the planet and the best musician that I have ever known God bless you
Great to see Tony being so gracious with his time and answering as many questions as they could throw his way. He was a treasure as a musician and a man ,with an incredible body of work for the ages.
Watching this on the day I learned Tony Rice passed on. A brilliant musician and a remarkable man. RIP Tony and thank you for all the great music over the years. Your music will live on forever.
Thank you for posting this video. I was at this workshop and I'm even recorded on the video asking a question at 2:55 about Tony's album, "Acoustics", which is my first experience with his music. What a thrill. I always have remembered this brief conversation I had with Tony Rice, 34 years ago. It's so cool to see that someone had it on tape.
This is amazing. He answered questions for nearly a hour, and probably had just played or had several stages to play on that day. Standing that long is hard on the body. I play in hour long sets. 3 or 4 in a day stress the legs and back. Not thinking of how hard it is to get food at venues sometimes. Kudos to Tony for taking this much time for questions.
Right at the end he says "well somebody just told me I gotta go somewhere else, and it's been a pleasure talkin to ya" ... kinda gave me a chill. And just before that he said not a show goes by when his hands don't cramp and I was thinking recently how I probably couldn't perform because of that, but I guess you do what you do and darnitall. Inspiration. What a great guy.
THANKS! I was at this workshop. Thanks for showing it. It was quite the festival. Tony gave a "workshop" around this time at a bluegrass festival in Grass Valley with 15 of us sitting next to him. Someone asked about his guitar...and Tony said "Here" as he gave his guitar to the awestruck fan. Tony was very cool. He told me he admired Wes Montgomery a lot. Very nice guy.
Back Dec 2020 with the sad news we've been hoping would not arrive. Feel even more blessed and grateful for all the video and audio, and my very extensive collection LP's, CD's and DVD's. Thinking of TR's family and close friends these days.
This is the Tony I remember, and, I did know him. And that laugh. He knew he was good, but he was humble enough to give me inspiration to learn to play.
What a GIFTED individual. Tony Rice is the MOST skilled songwriting bluegrass flat picking guitarist the world has seen. He has PERFECTED his craft. Thanks Tony, you're actually a GREAT teacher, maybe without knowing. You're music has changed a WHOLE LOT of lives, including mine. Your life's work has been INCREDIBLY inspiring for so many. Good bless...
Thanks for this I just found it. I'm an old friend. I haven't been able to keep with Toney s progress over the years. He and I lived together for a short time. He was 18 or 19 at the time. In Louisville KY. If you know how get in touch tell him I said hi and I still have my Martin and it sounds great and I really enjoyed picking in my living room.together. I still love the music. I just went a different direction.
This is a great look into the period of what was then, although unknown at the time, the Zenith of Tony’s career. Not long after this, he had the ill-fated surgery to correct his deviated septum (and his trademark slightly crooked nose). Many who knew him believed the affects of the surgery’s aftermath began the downfall of his singing ability. That Columbia signing and the resulting record “Native American” was meant to be the start of several that would catapult Rice into the spotlight a bit more than he had ever been in his career, outside of Bluegrass and Dawg music that is. Such a shame, and a great chest of memories this video unlocks from the minds and hearts of his fans viewing it. Great vid!!
I read his words about the aphasia, the loss of speech or quality thereof. He delineated between "stress" aphasia and another term I can't remember or find, stress being the one that had no fix. I guess that's what he had. I've known people who have had a surgery and whose cords were traumatized either by the intubation or extubation; they sound the same as he did during that period. Such a loss when he lost the ability to sing and such a loss on Christmas Day, 2020. Rest in Peace, Tony Rice. You impacted tens of thousands of lives.
I am so happy I found this, but bummed that I didn't find it earlier! I have such wide ranging musical tastes, but Tony Rice is one of my all time favorite musicians, and such a gentleman.
The only thing that would make this better would be subtitles for the questions. Tony's voice is exceptionally recorded here, the volume and quality differential between him and the audience members is significant.
I had the Grisman records and Tony's first record, I never heard him talk- he was a sharp, articulate and nice guy, pleasure to watch this. Thanks for posting...
Tony is showing a huge professional side by being so generous with his time. Answering all these questions to the public is a characteristic of a professional that appreciates his fans. Too bad nobody would do this nowadays.

Hard to believe I am 39 and older than Tony is here. I am a big Deadhead and first heard Tony Rice on his only session with Jerry Garcia. It was great to hear him lay back a bit and play with another lead. Since that day obviously explored all his stuff.
Tony was a legit American treasure alongside Doc as far as flatpicking goes and it's about as simple as that. A shame nobody in crowd requested he dance. He would have lept (from a feathered stance) at the chance to display what a world class tap dancer he was zzzzzZING

Too bad the person using the camera could not prevent themself from playing around with the zoom and tripod until after he finished Tony's presentation.
I have an idea why Texas might be Tony's his least favorite place to perform -- little-to-no reaction and general non-acceptance. Tony is 'bigger' than Texas, and 'Texas' would never accept that!!
No words can express the genius in Tony Rice
What a legend. The world is a lesser place without Tony Rice. He will be missed.
We greatly appreciate you posting this video.
With Gratitude and Blessings, Rice.
I'm so blessed that I was able to record Tony's early history. I had know idea what historic videos I made.
Thank you and bless you.
I meant this human being back in the late 80s and he is one of the coolest dudes on the planet and the best musician that I have ever known God bless you
@For The Love Of The Truthmmmmmm. He's a badass, innovative and absolutely top shelf, but didn't change flat picking unless you were out of the loop
Great to see Tony being so gracious with his time and answering as many questions as they could throw his way. He was a treasure as a musician and a man ,with an incredible body of work for the ages.

One of the most talented, and nicest guys, that I ever met. I'm a huge Tony Rice fan, for both those reasons.

his speaking voice is legendary
Lol, who voted down Tony rice talking about guitar? This is a great and thoughtful q and a
Amen, brother.
But it’s supposed to be a workshop and he doesn’t touch a guitar. 😂. Anyways I didn’t thumbs down it and I’m still a huge fan.
my favorite part is when he says i don't suggest anyone else play these songs exactly like i do....i wish more pickers would listen to that sentiment.

Sarge whitson dam right
He really sang higher than you’d think with his speaking voice. Kind of amazing.
The strain of singing in a higher register for years is what ruined his voice
What a loss. R.I.P.
Wondeful.
If it was me? I would've asked.. "Could you please play your favorite song?"
Amen
is that Bela on the front row?
Wow!
This is kool
This is beyond kool!!!
Dang,Tony had a pretty good game of “Pocket pool” going on. You can tell he is super uncomfortable answering questions.
Scribble, scribble, scribble

love how close his mouth is to the mic and you can hear his breathing... its really weird kind of.
