This routine is a no-setup version of the Brother John Hamman Breakaway effect. Hamman, Marlo, and Sankey devised a gaffed approach to this plot. I wanted an impromptu method, which the performer could do with a borrowed shuffled deck. My first handle appeared in the How to Tame a Moose notes, 1995, and I called the routine Impromptu Breakaway.

It is called the Mirage count. It is a variation of a Larry West count from his book "Tricks you can count on." This variation of the West count is by John Bannon and it is unpublished and will be in my new book All-In.
