Great song! One of the best of the 70's. The guy IS in love with his girl but doesn't want to admit it. There is also a great video of a performance of the song.
Written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, Stewart came up with the idea for the song after his wife of eight years asked him why he didn't say "I love you" more often.
The technology did not exist to produce this song in 1975, so they invented it! They had another hit on a later album that hit the top 10. It's called The Things We Do For Love. After the band dispersed, the two main members of the band formed a duo called Godley and Cream. They had one hit called Cry. Please hear the remixed version. The single version is badly cut.
Godley & Creme left 10cc a very long time before the band "disbursed". 10cc had quite a few hits. Godley & Creme biggest hit was "An Englishman In New York".
"they had another hit". errrr,i think you'll find they had a string of hits and their albums were among the most creative you could find at that time. and its Godley and CREME who were also in at the beginning of MTV and produced many huge vids.
When I first heard this song, I thought the line "I've got your picture on the wall. It hides a nasty stain that's lying there" was hilarious!! It's still pretty funny.
Nice reaction dude! You sussed this one out pretty much. What people in the comments have got to remember is that this band (like me) are british, and this was the 1970s...society was still run by old fashioned victorian mentality people (and still is, partly). This is a song about being IN DENIAL which is the british condition. Obviously he loves her but he's not supposed to say that cos he has been taught (big boys don't cry!), as we all were, that displaying your emotions is wrong, especially for a man. To paraphrase Shakespeare: "Methinks the gentleman does protest too much"...In other words, if he's banging on about it not being true...then it must be true! Sorry for the rambling comment I'm a bit stoned lol. Keep these reactions coming man!
10CC were a great band, experimental rock with some progressive hints. They became victims of their pop success when the had their two big hits I'm Not In Love and The Things We do For Love. After that they were mostly known for those two songs and the rest of their excellent material was for the most part ignored.
They were revolutionary in the creative way they used the technology of the time in the making of this recording. Watch the documentary on the making of this song. Its quite interesting.
Yeah, precisely! I always wondered who exactly was supposed to be saying that. Was it the girl he was interested in? Or someone else? But when you watch the music video, the singer is doing the voiceover on that part; so it makes sense that it's his inner-self remembering someone telling him that. Plus, the gentle tone of voice she's using is like how a mother would talk to a young boy. It's actually sad, though, that she (or his father) never gave him guidance on to how to court a girl he's interested in, nor the whole thing about being in love, handling getting rejected, and so on and so forth. But at least in real life the song's writer did stay together with his wife for many decades. Maybe this song helped her understand why he never expressed his emotions often to her?
I remember being a kid in the 70s falling asleep with the radio on and waking up in the middle of the night to this song when they say “big boys don’t cry”. It scared the crap out of me! I thought someone was in my room! Lol
Oh yeah, he's bad in love, but broken hearted and afraid to admit it. You should look up a youtube on how this was recorded. It's amazing. Those sounds are actually overdubs of hundreds of voices, different notes on separate channels and played back on a mixing board by sliding the volumes up and down as if it was a keyboard!
For US the song should come with a caution- Do not play until unless you know what irony means. The singer knows better than anyone he's in love. That's the whole point ffs.
Synth pop of the 80's owed much to this band and their use of multitracking, overdubs etc. Awesome stuff...Godley & Creme split and made some real inventive/quirky music... Check out Snack Attack, One Night in Paris, Rubber Bullets.
Trippy, when this song came out, I thought it was a song by Paul McCartney and Wings. If you listen to McCartney and Wings from that same period, it sounds exactly like 10CC and Vice versa. IN any event, this is a great song. The guy keeps trying to make both us, and himself, believe he's not in love with this gal. By the end of the song, you know he's so in love, it's not funny! Thanks Trippy...
Did you hear the part "i keep your picture up on the wall, it hides a nasty stain thats lying there"? Lol (wasnt sure if you heard that) ...great song!
I think he heard the first part but not the second. The way he sings "nasty stain" always strikes me as so funny. I feel like I shouldn't be laughing at his pain though. I'm a monster
I think this was like a one-hit-wonder, but it was a big one back in the day. Plz check out Donovan, your doppelgänger hippie from the 60s. Sunshine Superman (w Page on guitar), There Is A Mountain, Hurdy Gurdy man. He does well live, too. I suppose I’d check the album versions first though.
Great song about a breakup and the fragility that comes when you may have made a terrible mistake. Not many songs are written from a man's perspective. The synth music is just one big lump of emotion in your throat.
@Syydneh Austin "you simply don't have a soul" Uh, what? You're claiming someone doesn't have an actual soul because they don't like a certain popular song/recording that you like? Correct? That's like saying someone doesn't have a soul because they don't like a certain recipe of mashed potatoes that you like. Are you the creator of all living things? What is your grand position to be able to deem someone to be a without a soul? Even then how can someone even exist without having a soul? Perhaps such extreme claims may come back to bite you on your own day of judgement. Ridiculous and extreme. Hope you never serve on a courtroom jury duty, you're not qualified. I happen to like the song, but I'm not going to damn someone just because they don't.

Hahaha naw thanks man! Thats good stuff too know lol thanks a bunch! 😄✌
You ain't got a clue
One of my very favorite songs of all time. ❤️
Yes,for me too but i cry so much on it loli had heard it on the radio several times when i was a child,i could never hold my tears.
Oh myyyyy brings back crazy memories! Lol the great "in denial" song!
Hahaha yeah for sure!
I remember hearing this when it was first produced. It was a total contradiction, but then I understood. Of course he's in love, VERY much in love.

Truly great headphone song.
Wow! Haven't heard this one in a while! Good song!
I think the dreamy "big boys don't cry" is a memory of his mother who taught him to hide his emotions. So as an adult he cannot admit being in love.

He was definitely in love, He was denying it to himself and her. LOL

Summer of '75 - Brilliant performance - Check out Ace "How Long" - Cool Haircut BTW
Such an amazing recording!! Also he such a liar, he is so in love with her!! Lol 🎼✌️❤️
Oh yeah, he's bad in love, but broken hearted and afraid to admit it.

I remember when this came out - thought it was a new Paul McCartney and Wings song - lol
😁
It does have a McCartney sound to it!
Speaking of other artists, Ozzy Osbourne once said that this was his favourite song. Who'd a thunk it!
For US the song should come with a caution- Do not play until unless you know what irony means. The singer knows better than anyone he's in love. That's the whole point ffs.
Yes I agree. He's not in denial, just being ironic. I can imagine his woman going up to him with a grin and giving whack on the head.
Favourite Band Mate, great reaction loved it

Yes there is a resemblance
Haha yeah I dont think ive heard any Paul Mcartney and the wings I'll have to check some out!
Just subscribed. This song came out when I was 14 years old. Big hit then, and brings back fond memories.
Great song and great video, Trippy! 👍
One of the best songs of the 70s no doubt 10 cc
Rubber Bullets, Life Is A Minestrone, The Dean and I. Great, great 10cc songs.
He's lost her. Slopped through his fingers. And he's devastated.
Godley and creme also had a minor hit with "Under Your Thumb", a spooky tune.
And 'Cry'
@@factsoverfeelings1 Yes. another good one
Yes, you got it!
I was In my 20’s back there. Part of my personal life’s soundtrack. Great memories!
Ahhh, the 70’s🎶🎸
A man in denial!! 😂
Great band! Like your shirt!👌👍✌️😎
Thanks, Trippy - took a little while to get it, right? "Nothing really matters... anyone can see... nothing really matters to me" lol
React to some HOT Chocolate - You Sexy Thing - live 1976

Yeah I must of missed the nasty stain part hahaha I'll have to go back and check that out lol
@@TrippyHippi3 Hahaha. I wonder what kind of stain it is?

10cc were not one hit wonders. Check them out , especially ' I'm Mandy Fly Me' Dreadlock Holiday. A very creative band
" He doth protest too much, me thinks" nice reaction I guess the whispering was a little creepy. lol
Always thought this was a song about a guy going though a breakup heart break. But great review my man.
Try I'm mandy fly me!! By them great song too.
Please React, Cuco - Lover is a day
It's a break up sing. She must have left him. Otherwise, he wouldn't have her picture. He's definitely still in love. One of my favorites.
Really nice sound.
Great song about a breakup and the fragility that comes when you may have made a terrible mistake. Not many songs are written from a man's perspective. The synth music is just one big lump of emotion in your throat.
I think Justin Bieber should do a remake of this
This was recorded by four exceptional musicians, how can a third rate artist be expected to do it justice.
Your picture on the Wall hides a nasty stain
I've always hated this song....
nothing's changed.
you simply don't have a soul
@Syydneh Austin
